60 game update - 10 games of fail

    Team record: 32-19-9 / 10th in NHL / 4th in East

If head coach Gilmour is truly breaking the season into ten game blocks, the team gets a massive F in this block. The Leafs posted a HORRIBLE effort and went 3-7 in the past ten; as usual Leaf fans in general have flown off the handle and now blame Brian Burke for trading for Rick Nash and disrupting any chemistry the team had.

While some of that is true I believe this was an isolated incident as for one Rick Nash is no doubt recovering from being traded away from the Jackets, and Nikolai Kulemin did a lot of things Nazem Kadri can't do due to physical size alone. I believe this will prompt changes in the line up, but speaking of line up news we have updates on the injury front.

    Injury Update:

Kyle Beach has returned to active duty and will be re inserted into the third line which, like every other line has struggled mightily in the past ten games.

Also on the plus side of injury news Mark Streit has returned to the line up and seems to be hungry for on ice action, while the veteran D man has missed the past seven weeks it would be wise to give him some time to return to game shape.

As always with the good, comes the bad. During last night's game D man Theo Peckham left after a rough shift in the middle frame, which has now been diagnosed as a hernia. Peckham is expected to miss the next four weeks with the injury.

Justin Abdelkader remains out with a separated shoulder, while rehab has been slow and painful for the left winger; Abdelkader is expected to make a return in five weeks.

Just as a personal note, I can't stress how badly the past ten games were played. I seriously couldn't do anything, simple passes were over shot or under shot, couldn’t hit the net, couldn’t get a save, penalty after penalty just horrible everywhere, every game. Was a tough stretch.

Kadri, Ribeiro and Paajarvi make it happen

With 22 games remaining can Phil Kessel catch Ovechkin? If you remember from last season this was a similar picture, except Kessel got left behind in the remaining 10 games, will this be Kessel's year?

We tried to get Coach Gilmour to comment on his teams break down in the past ten games but Gilmour would only say that the team is fine, just need some time to get out of the funk.

Re: Pride, hustle, heart. An NHL 12 Leafs BAGM

      Leafs media day

Hello and welcome fans and readers, today we have a few of the Leafs taking time to sit with us and discuss the recent successes and failures the Maple Leafs have had.

Today we have with us Phil Kessel, Rick Nash, Mark Streit, Doug Gilmour and Kyle Beach. Before we begin here guys I just wanted to say thanks for coming and taking the time to do this.

First off we have a randomly selected fan email question for you, let's read this off.

Okay this is from Jason Brown of Hamilton, Ontario and Jason writes:

Hey guys, I wasn't sure who was going to be at the media day so I will just ask a broad question this time and hopefully it gets mentioned!

My question for you guys is what is missing, from your prospective, in the last fifteen games when you think of the team as a whole.

Gilmour: There is a lot of things factoring into our slump of late Jason, in the past fifteen games most of the bounces have gone against us for one, and it’s terribly evident, seriously watch some replays it is honestly amazing how much bad luck is hanging over us in regards to bad bounces.

Kessel: Yeah the coach has it, we have had a lot of issues with luck, but we also have to get back to basic hockey that we were playing for the first fifty games.

Media: Okay, this one is for you Mark, sixty three games into the season and you have managed 46 games played with 20 points. People felt that you were going to have more of an impact here in Toronto, what do you feel is going on with your game?

Streit: Well, as you said I have struggled a lot with injuries, and with how fast the game is today, when you’re in and out of the line up like I have been it can be very difficult to maintain your fitness levels, so each time I return I’m that much farther behind.

So far this year I have been behind the eight ball for most of it, and it's showing in my stats and play on the ice, I don’t think I’m having other issues, I see the play well and anticipate, I am just that step behind, it's very hard to do.

Media: Okay coach, what's going on with the team, fifteen game snow or unacceptable hockey.

Gilmour: Like I said above, we have had horrible luck. But beyond that I think you hit it on the head when you said team. If you look at video, and trust me we have been, you can see how we got away from our game.

We built this season on playing simple and fast hockey, which means the basics were getting done on a shift by shift basis regardless of the player or zone on the ice, I’m talking short support passes here, puck attack, zone defence, puck support, covering pinches, communication. The very basics of hockey, the fundamentals have slipped away and we are getting blasted out there.

Media: Kyle, this is your first season of length in the NHL, how do you feel about your performance with 10 goals and 23 points.

Beach: I would like it to be higher than that, I feel that I have failed to make good on some chances that the guys have created. I like the unit I am on, we are quick and physical and this season I have been able to keep my PIMS down really well, but the scoring needs to be a bit higher, especially if I want second line minutes. As far as my first season I feel great out there and I really enjoy myself.

Media: Coach, a fan question again here. Joel from Toronto asks:

Hey Gilmour, just found out your going to be there tonight, name your best and worst player, don't wuss out either.

Gilmour: Yeah, that sounds like a Leaf fan. Well Joel, our best player all season has been Phil Kessel, without a doubt.

He has performed all season, even during our slump here, Phil has still put pucks in the net, and played a solid two way game.

As for our worst player, we don't have one. We have guys who struggle in certain areas and different times, but look at our last fifteen games and I can point a lot of that out pretty easily, including myself.

Media: Rick, since coming to Toronto and playing ten games you have two goals and seven assists, how do you feel about that? Is there anything you need to do differently?

Nash: Well I need to score more, the puck just isn't going in right now for me but at the same time I am excited to help my line mates get the puck to the twine.

I would like to see myself be more powerful out there and really pushing the opposition back, make space for myself and for my line mates. I think I have done an okay job getting used to the guys and what they like to do out there, but you gotta remember I don’t see these guys often so it takes time.

Media: Okay Rick, how do you feel about being moved out of Columbus?

Nash: That is something I am not willing to discuss at this time, we need to focus on playing hockey here, not whimpering about what has gone past, I didn't want to be moved but it was done and believe me I am happy of all places I was moved to Toronto, you all know this is my childhood favourite team.

Media: Alright guys its prediction time, playoffs yay or nay, and why?

Gilmour: Without a doubt, and I say that because, there is no doubt!

Nash: Yay, were a good team, one of the best I believe.

Kessel: This is the year, you just watch.

Streit: Sticking with the coach here, without a doubt.

Media: There you have it fans, a confident, even if struggling group of Toronto Maple Leafs. Once again I just want to thank you all for being able to come here today and do this, we all appreciate it, and good luck in the next fifteen games.

Beach: I dont know about you guys, but I decided on puck drop of this season, we were in the playoffs.

        2014 trade deadline news

Hello fans and readers, for TSN I am hockey insider Bob McKenzie. No one really knew the direction Toronto was going to head in this year’s deadline; the team had a winning record and for once sat in a playoff position but lost 9 out of the past 15 games.

The consensus leading up to the week of deadline day was that Burke may be forced to move a good player just to shake things up, but then Toronto put on a smoke show in Ottawa, winning 5-0 then played a tight checking very very good game against the penguins, winning 2-1 after carrying a 0-0 tie into the third.

While everyone else looked on scratching their heads and trying to predict what Burke would end up doing, the answer came in the form of complete silence, the days leading up to deadline were quiet, the night before was silent and deadline day it's self, no news; no reports came out of Toronto.

So as the day glided by for the Toronto Maple Leafs and everyone wondered if anything would happen out of the Toronto camp let's have a look at the trades that were made around the league.

The Calgary Flames (6th in NHL) traded D Sergei Kolosov and D Grant Webern to the Winnipeg Jets (28th in NHL) for the Jets 2014 4th round pick.

The New York Islanders (19th in NHL) traded D Andrew Macdonald to the Colorado Avalanche (18th in NHL) for Colorado's 2014 first round pick.

The St. Louis Blues (24th in NHL) traded their 2014 4th round pick to the L.A Kings (1st in NHL) for LW K. Henderson RW T. Toffoli and G J. Berube.

The Dallas Stars (26th in NHL) traded their 2014 4th round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes (3rd in NHL) for C Steve Pinizotto and RW Thomas Nesbitt.

The Anaheim Ducks (2nd in NHL) traded their 2014 1st round pick and C Phil Mcrae to the Chicago Blackhawks (15th in NHL) for D Shawn Lalonde.

The Chicago Blackhawks (15th in NHL) sent D Duncan Keith to the Ottawa Senators (11th in NHL) for C Olli Jokinen and LW Marco Sturm.

That was the day’s complete set of actions, here is a brief clip of an interview done with Brian Burke after the uneventful deadline day.

Burke: Sure it was quiet in the way that no trades were made. We took a look around at what was available, and teams took a look at what we had available and nothing could be done and it's as simple as that. Despite what has transpired in the past fifteen games, I believe in this group and I didn't feel a need to make any rash trades that were being reported in the media.

We are more than happy to sit tight with this group and forge into the playoffs.

Ahh playoffs, a place the Leafs haven’t seen for a very long time, let’s have a look at the playoff race.

          70 game update

          Team record: 38-20-12 / 7th in NHL / 4th in East

With the recent strong play of the first and second lines Toronto has rebounded from their horrible fifteen game stretch to secure a 6-2-2 record in the last ten games.

          Kessel beats Enroth in tight

          Injury update:

D Theo Peckham has been cleared to return, Peckham will assume his second line duties and the club hopes his return will stabilize a sometimes shaky D core.

Sticking with the trend of get one back just to lose another, C Nazem Kadri was injured in last night's game and will be out for an estimated three weeks while nursing a sore hip sustained after receiving a clean check in the Winnipeg offensive zone.

                Injury update:

Nazem Kadri has begun to skate with the team, while Kadri dons the yellow no contact jersey during pratice coach Gilmour has said that Nazem is only a few days away from getting back into a game.

When Kadri does return it will bring Toronto back up to full strength just before the post season, and while Abdelkader has done a good job filling in for Kadri on the second unit, his playmaking and speed have been missed as production has fallen mostly to the first line of late.

Thanks Bt, I didnt feel a need to change much, though I did look at bringing in a verteran D man (EG Willie Mitchell) but the cost wasn't worth the trouble.

As for the cup, if Phil Kessel has his way we will, he has been on fire in the past six games, two hat tricks and the rest 2 point games.

Many bright spots here in one of the strongest years seen in Toronto since pre lock out years.

Phil Kessel took the league by storm this season, producing his best numbers of his career, alongside many other contributors having career years another stand out would be Sergei Bobrovsky showing the hockey world he is a legitimate number one goaltender in today's league.

Yeah, they (the Rangers) came at us really hard out of the gate and really pushed us back on our heels I felt.

The guys started to get back on their feet when Luke (Schenn) put Boyle through the glass there in our zone, that really seemed to spark everyone, After The Thrill (Phil Kessel) snapped the wrister past Lundqvist it was over.

I am glad we were able to do this on home ice for the fans, they have really deserved it.

                          Game two VS Rangers:

                          Pre game interview: Coach Gilmour

We played a really solid game in game one, just a couple of adjustments I would like to see for game two, we need to start the game as we finished our last game and I would like to see us play tighter defensively.

We played a fast and physical game after about the midpoint of the first, but that's to be expected, a lot of our guys here are getting their first taste of playoff hockey and it's easy to get away from the game plan.

It was a very frustrating game, Henrik gave us the saves we needed to win but we failed him.

They (the Leafs) came out fast and hard and put two in really quickly, then after that they were able to play a trap and chip and chase game, rolling four lines. They were able to stay fast and play physical the entire game.

We got a lot of opportunities having five power plays, but couldn't beat Bobrovsky, now were down two games heading home. This needs to be fixed.

                            Game three in New York:

Pre game interview with coach Gilmour:

Way too many penalties last game. Luckily for us Bob came up larger than life and stopped them all, that was a frustrating game to watch from the bench.

We came out really fast in the first and were able to push them (the rangers) on their heels like they did to us in game one, just we found the back of the net twice quickly, from there we rolled four lines trying to keep everyone playing short fast shifts.

The biggest thing heading into this next game here is we continue to utilize our strengths which are speed and physical play

Franson picks up a juicy rebound and makes no mistake

Ugh, I forgot to not exit the game to get stats I’m sorry but no box score for this one.

Game score ended up being a 4-0 win, rangers have played flat all playoffs and Henrik can't do it all himself.

Rick Nash got his first goal of the post season and Phil Kessel added two goals, Cody Franson also got his first. sorry again

                            Post game reaction: Brad Richards:

We gotta come out harder here, we didn’t play a successful 82 game season to get into the playoffs and get swept out right away.

This failure is on us skaters right now, Henrik has done everything possible on his end of things, now we skaters have to pick it up and get our heads in the game, because right now it's looking pretty bad out there.

Nash finds a quiet area on the ice and rips a one timer, half clapper top cheddar baby!

                            Post game interview: Phil Kessel

Yeah it's great to put a couple in, but it's better to see the guys firing on all cylinders out there, our guys are clicking well and finding the holes in the Rangers game right now.

Well, were up 3-0 now and I think it's important we keep pushing and finish them off next game here, when you got a good team like these guys down and playing below where they should it's important to seize that opportunity and not let them back up.
