Could someone explain to me how the "Help Defense" sliders work?

If I want players to rotate quicker and stronger (i.e., getting closer to the slasher) from their off-ball assignments on penetration, should I turn up "Defensive Pressure" or "Help Defense" in the Coach Profiles menu?

If you turn up defensive pressure, the defenders will play tighter off ball defense overall. Even with the ball more than 2 passes away, they will play closer to their man. They also will make it harder to pass the ball against you but you will give up more points in the paint and get beat on cuts.

If you turn up Help Def your defenders will leave their man to help when you get beat off the dribble. This depends on their defensive awareness rating. Higher rated players will do a better job of helping while lower rated ones will probably help at the wrong time or not at all when need.

You also need to look at your defensive settings to make sure you play deny ball on the shooters you don't want to help off of. You want to sag off of the players you don't mind taking a shot. If you need more help, let me know.

Just think of it as the configuration when defensive settings are set to Auto.

Look at that menu and convert the settings into a 0-100 scale.

Well, the thing that confused me is that "Defensive Pressure" is labeled in the menu as "How quickly the team will move on the defensive side of the ball."

But the name would imply, and others have said, that it controls how tightly your defenders play their assignments, and lowering it would be conducive to helping off-ball on penetration.

Are you talking about help defense in the coaching menu? Or the one in the game slider menu?

A man who is really trying to learn "how to fish" (how things work), has to obvy descriptions and hints, to put his mind in total blank and focus on what happens when an edit is made (be it an increase or decrease) ?

I would recommend that you take this approach instead of trying to acomodate reality to the supposed concepts ... do the other way around, acomodate the/your concepts with reality.

You wont truely know how the game works if you dont take this approach, in fact, it will be harder ... as your concepts (even maybe the game concepts) may be in contrast with reality and with the concepts of those that have done what I said ... it is the only reason why you havent still seem to havent grasp the other aspects of the game you have questions with, albeit receiving more than a few tips with people of knowledge.

Dont intend in any way to offend but to put you in the right track ... thus, let it be known that learning how to fish takes even more time than having another give you the fish. In this case, it takes way more than a few weeks ... then again, it is worth the invested time.

That video doesn't help me. I still don't know how Defensive Pressure works in regards to how it affects your teammates' willingness to protect the paint.

I want my team to pack the paint. I put Defensive Pressure at 0, Help Defense global slider at 100 and my team Help Defense slider at 80. They're still not packing the paint.

Why?

Use a 3-2 zone defense.

I don't think it's all that difficult pressure controls on ball pressure and help D controls how much and how strong the help comes. I believe that is what is covered in the video.

Of course if you have low pressure then more guys are closer to help than their man. Other individual settings like onball and offball defensive settings modify those settings accordingly.

I just ran a test with Defensive Pressure set to 0, Help Defense set to 100, and Double Teams set to 0. 2 or more defenders are in or around the paint in most situations where the ball-handler drives the paint. The only time defenders approach the 3PT line is to close out on shooters. Obviously everyone can't provide help defense at the same time, so you'll usually see two people defending penetration.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your Help Defense Strength and Defensive Awareness sliders set to?
