Game Notes
Cal has snuck up on everybody this year, and has a great chance to steal the Pac-12 North title with a win over archrival Stanford and a loss by Boise State. The Bears are led by an impressive 1-2 punch at running back in seniors Isi Sofele (895 yards, 5.4 YPC, 8 TDs) and CJ Anderson (713 yards, 5.9 YPC, 10 TDs). This has been a requirement due to superstar receiver Keenan Allen rupturing a disk in his back in the season opener, an injury that ended his junior season. Without him, Cal's passing game has been scaled back substantially. Zach Maynard's passing numbers are pedestrian (2052 yards, 13 TDs, 8 INTs, 54%), and his primary targets now are tight end Spencer Hagan (43 receptions, 585 yards, 2 TDs) and sophomore wideouts Kaelin Clay (39-499-1) and Maurice Harris (28-426-3). Stanford's goal will absolutely be to make Maynard beat them with his arm.

Defensively, the Bears are as smothering as ever, ranking 1st in the Pac-12 in total defense and 2nd in both pass and run defense. As usual, they run the same 3-4 scheme Stanford deploys. Up front, Deandre Coleman, Aaron Tipoti, Todd Barr and Kendrick Payne provide a versatile mixture of agility and brute force. One player to possibly keep an eye on is sophomore nose guard Viliami Moala out of Grant Union High in Sacramento. Moala weighs in at 356 pounds, and could provide serious trouble for Stanford's iso running game.

At linebacker, Cal hasn't missed a beat, even with Mychal Kendricks and DJ Holt gone from last year's squad. David Wilkerson and Nick Forbes lead the team in tackles, and Dan Camporeale and Chris McCain are pass rushers from the outside.

In the secondary the Bears go four-deep at corner with Marc Anthony, Stefan McClure, Steve Williams and Josh Hill. Anthony leads the team with four interceptions, followed by McClure with three. The Bears are young at safety, with first year starters at both spots in sophomores Avery Sebastian and Michael Coley.
