Big Game Beatdown
Stanford opens the floodgates after halftime to steamroll Cal
PALO ALTO, CA - As the clock hit 0:00 and All Right Now started to blast from the Stanford band, Cardinal coach Brian Kudron was able to do something he hasn't been able to do all season.
He smiled.
After a tight and tense first half, Stanford outscored their rivals from Berkeley 31-0 in the second half to run away with their third straight Big Game victory, 37-7.
"I couldn't be prouder of these kids," a Gatorade-soaked Kudron said afterward. "We faced a lot of adversity this year, and we didn't live up to all the goals we set for ourselves before the season, but this is always the most important game on the schedule, and our guys played like it today. It was really tight at halftime, but our seniors took charge, and after that I knew they wouldn't let this team lose to Cal in their last home game. It's a testament to the leadership on this team, and that will instill leadership in the underclassmen moving forward."
The difference between the first and second half was Stanford's vaunted running game. Cal's defense crushed it in the first half, and the Cardinal had a stunning 12 yards net rushing at halftime, only to explode behind Tyler Gaffney and later Anthony Wilkerson, finishing with 156 yards. Wilkerson was initially held out despite being cleared from his concussion, but he took over in the second half after Gaffney went down with a sprained elbow in the third quarter.
At eight wins, Stanford is likely in line for a spot in anywhere from the Holiday Bowl to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.
