The Rise of the NBA Nerd

This is one of my favorite articles from Grantland.

Before I saw this story, I've noticed the 2 most recent GQ's have featured an NBA player(s) fashion spread.

I know Amare and Wade have personal stylists.

I don't know how much of an impact Stern's dress code had, but I've noticed in the past year, a lot more players are wearing slim fit suits/slim dress shirts/slim ties. We are also seeing suspenders, khaki's, and cardigans. This is a contrast to the "baggy era".

I see the NBA as part of an overall trend of straight young men being more into fashion than ever before.

Someone needs to tell these guys while they're dressing nicer, all the tats still look extremely trashy (WTF is up with all the ink Durant has all over his chest and stomach?).

I love the way Wade dresses. IMO he's the best dressed guy in the league by far. Wade benefits hugely by being a relatively normal sized human as opposed to being a a giant. As far as Amar'e goes it doesn't work for me, the whole for lack of a better term "nerd" thing Amar'e does looks like an affectation more than anything else. While I don't think it really fits Amar'e's personal style we've seen so far I'd like to see him get put together by Tom Ford, if anything at the very least his 70's aesthetic would bring back fond memories for older Knicks fans of those 1970's teams when they had Pearl, Clyde, and Willis.

It's amazing to me at how bad some of the NBA players fits are, considering just about everything they wear is custom. The worst dressed guy in the league at any level is Jordan though. I think its obvious that Juanita was the one dressing him because as soon as he got divorced he started looking like hot garbage.

    Jordan went from this

As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

I didn't know their was a blog dedicated to MJ's fashion style. He needs a stylist asap.

I agree Wade is the sharpest dressed guy in the NBA. Size does play a huge part in how it all comes together. IMO slim/skinny fitting clothes looks odd on really tall/short/fat people. There's a reason why the majority of male models are usually around 5'10 to 6'6. And of course the baggy style looks terrible no matter what your height and weight is.

With the amount of money these guys make, there's no excuse to look sloppy.

It looks like LBJ is opening a clothing store called Unknown in Miami soon.

D-Wade is sooooooooo hit or miss. He has some absolutely wretched outfits.

I'd say Derek Fisher is the best dressed in the league.

MJ is so clueless, surprising since he was so well-dressed during his playing days.

Duncan is by far the worst dressed in the league, he pretty much wears pajamas.

WTF @ Jordan. The guy probably sleeps in a bed made out of stacks of money and he's rocking torn *** jeans? Wow.

I'm all for the backpack, KD can do whatever he wants.

I just want to know what's in them lol

MJ is so rich and popular that he can wear whatever he wants and noone could care, but clearly there's someone who disagrees lol

Read it a few days ago, loved it. The article really isn't about fashion at all of course, but that probably is really the only aspect of the piece that can be talked about here without encroaching on TOS violations.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.
