Stanford Marches On
Defense is dominant as Nottingham fires on all cylinders
PALO ALTO, CA - After two games in 2012, something was obviously very wrong with Stanford's defense.
Two games into 2013, things look to be turning around.
Outside of a few hiccups, Stanford's defense lowered the hammer on Army's triple option attack, keeping the Black Knights to 85 yards rushing on 39 carries. That neutralized Army's offense as a whole and allowed the Cardinal to roll to a 46-3 win.
On offense, quarterback Brett Nottingham was lethal in his efficiency, completing 16 of 19 passes for 258 yards and three scores, while Anthony Wilkerson carried the load on the ground again with 157 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.
"I'm proud of our guys after these first two games," Brian Kudron said after the game. "It's still hard to tell what kind of team you have after just two games, but right now I'm happy with where we're at. Everything takes a step forward next week with conference play starting, so we've got to be up to the challenge."
One interesting item of note was senior left tackle Cameron Fleming being yanked from the game after committing three holding penalties in the first quarter. He was replaced by Kevin Kelly, the redshirt freshman from Anaheim Servite who, despite being a 3-star recruit out of high school, was the top lineman on Stanford's board in that cycle. Coach Kudron didn't comment when asked who would get the start at left tackle next week against San Diego State.
