Top 10 players in the NBA Going Into the Season

<hr style="color:#D1D1E1" size="1"> As the title reads. Going into the season, who do you have as the top 10 players in the NBA? We'll revisit this at the conclusion of the year. Right now, my list is as follows.

    1. Dirk
    2. Wade
    3. LeBron
    4. Durant
    5. Howard
    6. Paul
    7. Melo
    8. DWill
    9. Kobe
    10. Amare/Rose

Honorable mentions: Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook.

Some of you will see this list and throw a fit. Allow me to explain me rankings.

I don't believe Dirk will hold the top spot. But because of what he accomplished in the playoffs; fighting through Kobe, Durant, LeBron, and Wade en route to a title win, he deserves the title of #1 until someone takes it from him, or he proves he no longer deserves it.

Wade and LeBron, quite literally, are a toss up in my opinion. I believe LeBron to be more physically gifted, but Wade possesses the mental strength that LeBron sometimes proves he lacks. Both are great players, and interchangeable as far as I'm concerned, but if I'm in the finals and the game is on the line, I want Wade taking the shots.

Durant is on the cusp of greatness. His handle is tighter(improved floor game), and he looks a little stronger. Even added a few post moves to his game. He's highly efficient from the floor, and money from the line. He's rotating better on defense, and causes havoc in the passing lanes with his length. He needs to cut down his turnovers, see the floor better, and get his teammates more involved, but outside of that he's gravy. This could be his year.

Dwight? At 1 or 2 in the league, I find him to be a tad bit overrated. Great player, and one of the best, but his game is a little limited. He has difficulties passing out of double teams, and he's a liability at the line. His post game is improved, but he's ineffective and inconsistent outside of the painted area. That said, he's an excellent defender. By far the best in the league, and an elite rebounder. He and Durant are interchangeable at 4 and 5.

Paul can leap up this list if he plays at his 08-09 level of play. Has to prove he can stay healthy though. Despite that, he's the best PG in the league, bar none.

Melo is one of the best scorers in the league. I have him at 3 behind Dirk and Durant. Excellent rebounder relative to his position, but he needs to be more consistent on the defensive end. Also has to play better in the playoffs. What's he at, 7 first round exits? That must change.

D-Will is a monster. Has a killer handle, and see's the floor like few do. Not the most athletic player in the league, but he knows basketball.

Kobe. Well, he isn't getting any younger, and with this wrist injury, I'm not sure how good he'll be this season. We'll see though. He'll certainly have the opportunity to shoot more.

Rose, despite winning the MVP, struggled mightily during last seasons playoffs. His jumper's inconsistent, and he's a mediocre defender. If that. That said, he possesses premier athleticism, making him an excellent slasher, and is a pleasure to watch around the rim.

Amare is Amare. Great offensive player, but a liability on defense.

I agree with the group of guys you listed, I would probably minus Amare out and sub Kobe or Rose in... I would keep Love and Griffin out for sure... Amare is ahead of those two in my eyes.

Edit, my bad thought you left Kobe out...

I would take Love over Amare. He's a better shooter, rebounder, and defender.

I would probably put Rose behind DWill, but all in all it's splitting hairs.

Love is definitely a better rebounder, but I think shooting wise they're equal? I don't have stats or anything to prove it, but I know Amare has legit range.

The way I picked my top ten was a combination of skill and who id pick first if I was picking a team for a pick up game. Not the most scientific method I guess.

Indeed. Rose is only going to improve and having Rip to kick out to and relieve some pressure is going to do wonders. On the flip side, I don't see Wade improving at 30, and in a condensed season I could see it hurting his year.

Kobe over Melo, I love Melo's game, big big fan. Health could easily swap the two, but I think Kobe will be ok despite the wrist. Both volume scorers, Melo is very efficient, but I'm still taking Kobe, though it's Melo's to take.

Amare does have legit range, but Kevin Love is the best shooting PF in the game outside of Dirk. He doesn't get as big as Amare in the paint though.

Yeah, in the paint is what makes the difference for me, and the offensive potency that Amare posesses.

Wow. It's amazing how the "what have you done for me lately" mentality plagues the sports fan community. Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever watches games anymore or if their judgement is based purely on stats, awards, and achievements. Not singling anyone out in here in particular, just in general. Just a few beefs I have.

                              Kobe

Is there a reason why everyone believes Kobe is no longer among the top tier elite? Is he still not the most versatile scorer in the league? I mean know he's a year older and yeah he's had his share of minor injuries here and there, but for anyone who paid attention last season Kobe was still - by and large - a beast. He's certainly at the tail end of his prime, it's last legs even... but he's not past it yet. He's not over the hill. He's still Kobe.

                              Dwight

Somewhere along the line people have been led to believe that Dwight Howard is more dominant than he actually he is. The reason Orlando shoots themselves out of games is because they take too many contested threes, and those threes are contested because Dwight doesn't demand the type of attention from the defense that top tier centers of the 90's used to. They have surrounded with Dwight with a more than capable borderline all-star point guard in Jameer, veteran wing players who could shoot well and slash if need be in Hedo and Richardson, solid role players coming off the bench including arguably the best shooter in NCAA history... and yet this team can't seem to get over the hump. How much more talent does this guy need to play with? Maybe it's not the GM. Maybe it's Dwight... or Van Gundy even. You know people forget that before Orlando reached the finals three seasons ago, they were forced to a Game 7 against a Garnett-less Boston team.

                              Rose

The media has really made this kid out to be something he's not, and this is coming from a life-long Bulls fan. Let's not beat around the bush. Rose is like Allen Iverson if Allen Iverson couldn't shoot. He's not the best point guard in Basketball, just a really damn good scorer for his size who happens to play the point guard position. The key to Chicago's success lies in their defense. That's what was keeping them in games, not their 20th ranked offense. Look at what happened when Miami stuck LeBron on him in the playoffs. He was completely nullified and his impact on the game was almost zero. That's all Miami had to do. That wouldn't happen with other point guards. You can't take Chris Paul out of a game. You can't take Deron Williams out of a game. You can't take Steve Nash out of a game. If Rose's primary responsibility on Chicago was to generate offense (and to score), then you can't tell me you can't name several players in the association who could have done a better job in Chicago than Rose did. I'm not saying he's playing on an All-Star team, but that team wasn't exactly a bunch of scrubs either. Boozer and Deng are two very capable players at their respective positions. I have no idea why this team can't put more points on the board.
