Cardiac Cardinal does it again
Stanford storms back to stun Oregon in overtime
PALO ALTO, CA - Never say die.
That's the message Stanford coach Brian Kudron is always preaching to his team, and it was never needed more than it was Saturday as the Oregon Ducks laid siege to the Cardinal, sprinting out to a 28-3 lead, and answering every punch Stanford threw at them in the fourth quarter.
Ultimately though, Stanford's determination could not be denied, as Brett Nottingham took the Cardinal's offense into overdrive in the final quarter, completing the furious comeback, and then doing it again after the Ducks retook the lead late. Stanford tied it at the gun, and unleashed the hounds in overtime, sacking Oregon QB Bryan Bennett twice and knocking the Ducks out of field goal range.
From there, it was academic. Stanford moved the ball nine yards, and Jordan Williamson put his fifth field goal through the uprights, giving the Cardinal a dazzling 52-49 victory.
"We always know what to expect when we play Oregon," Kudron said. "They don't have any gear except top gear, they don't slow down and they never get tired. Obviously we would have preferred a better performance on defense, but sometimes that's just the way things go when you face a team like Oregon, and you just have to press through it and hope your offense can match theirs. I couldn't be prouder of Brett right now, to be honest. It's not easy following in the footsteps of someone like Andrew Luck, and Brett took a lot of heat for how things unfolded for us last year, and a lot of that was unfair. So I'm so happy that he's seized the reins. This is his football team now. He commands the locker room, and has grown into a spectacular leader."
