Snow Angels
In a driving snowstorm, Stanford takes the air out of the ball and the BeaversIt's almost a lost art in football nowadays, but there used to be a time when coaches of visiting teams in unfavorable weather conditions would deploy the most conservative gameplan imaginable, in an effort to minimize the possibility of mistakes caused by the home crowd or the weather.
Stanford coach Brian Kudron broke out that gameplan Saturday night in Corvallis, reducing the powerful Stanford offense to a throwback 1970s "three yards and a cloud of dust" outfit, dominating the time of possession in blizzard-like conditions at Reser Stadium.
The Cardinal took almost no chances, settling for running play after running play, and letting the defense carry the water; a task they gladly accepted, demolishing Oregon State in the trenches and picking off six passes in a 30-3 bludgeoning.
"I don't think many coaches could pull off what we pulled off tonight, really," Kudron said. "In today's game, it's all about scoring and scoring and scoring and lighting up the scoreboard and running up and down the field. I think a lot of coaches would have trouble executing a gameplan like ours for a game like this, where your goal is to just play keepaway, essentially, and lean on your defense to pull you through. We challenged our defense to lead the charge tonight, and they answered the bell."
Perhaps the biggest test of Stanford's season now lies ahead a week from now, as they will travel across the San Francisco Bay to face their archrivals from Berkeley. The Bears have experienced a resurgence this season after several mediocre years, and they will be thirsting for vengeance after three straight losses to Stanford, all in humiliating fashion. The winner will represent the North Division in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
