The Wild, Wild West
Stanford survives an old-fashioned shootout against SDSU

PALO ALTO, CA - This is most certainly not what Stanford fans have come to expect over the past few years. And Cardinal coach Brian Kudron made that very clear, while also taking a not so subtle jab at a conference foe.

"Obviously this isn't what we're about here," Kudron said after Stanford's absurd 78-45 win over San Diego State. "There might be some other teams in this conference happy with poor defense and having to outgun the other team, but that's not us. That's not what this program is about, and it goes against everything we try to teach these kids. The fact that we have an offense good enough to score as many points as we do doesn't have we should have to. We've got some soul searching to do, defensively."

That soul searching will focus on the secondary, as SDSU backup Chad Jefferies threw for 465 yards and four touchdowns after Stanford knocked starter Bryan Woods out with an injury. Stanford's defense did score twice themselves, but was otherwise inept against the Aztecs. Thankfully Stanford may have the best offense in America, as Brett Nottingham, Remound Wright, and the ferocious, veteran offensive line carried their weight, keeping distance between themselves and the Aztecs all day.

A hint that things might've been wacky came early in the game, when San Diego State opened the scoring with a touchdown, only to have Stanford corner AJ Grant explode off the edge and block the extra point, which was then returned by linebacker Trevor Galloway for two points. Grant later blocked a field goal in the third quarter.

Whatever is plaguing the Cardinal defense, they have two weeks to fix, as a bye week looms, followed by a tough road test in Provo against BYU.
