Torrey Smith 69 --> 78. Only a bump of 9, but he plays like a beast, at least for me. Seems to always break at least one tackle, and catch (particularly in traffic) better than he actually does. Oh, and he goes up to an 86 after one year, 92 after two, can go up or down from there depending how you do in the third season (I've seen him go up to 95 and down to 90). Also they make him a 98 rated returner, I'm not sure how accurately that correlates to real life I don't think he had any returns at all this year IRL.

Mind you, this is coming from a 49er fan, but Andy Lee is definitely in the same league as Lechler. Both deserve to be in the high 90s. If I had to say one outperformed the other this year, it's Lee. Only punter with an average of 50 yards per punt this year, and he also got more inside the 20 than Lechler.
What about Navorro Bowman & Ray McDonald on the 49ers? I can imagine that they must've been huge movers this season, and if they weren't, Madden wasn't paying attention. My copy of Madden is coming in the mail still, so I'll check then. I think Bowman is currently a high 80s overall? I assume he started lower than that. (And if I had my say, he would be in the 90s after outperforming Willis. I'd put McDonald in the high 80s at least as well).Comment

What is with the obsession with OVR ratings? Seriously... they don't mean anything. Look at the individual ratings.
What is sad is that players abilities are often manipulated to alter their overall rather than giving them a true rating. It's sad really.Comment

Well Brady is the only one left of those 3 QBs you just named and set a NFL record with 5 TDs in a half and tied the record for TDs in a game with 6!!! And honestly it could have been 8-10 if it wasn't for a early INT and fumble plus the just kept running the entire 2nd half bc the game was already over!!!! And if his DLine plays the way they did last week, and BAL average QB look worse than he is NE will be in the SB for Brady 5TH time, if I had to choose a playoff QB it would be Brady everytime. How is Greg Jennings not on the biggest losers bc he was just plain bad this year. Idk how Nelson is higher than 1500+ yards Cruz?Comment

adem, have you spoke with Donnie about Dashon Goldson? I really believe he has been unfairly ignored the whole season. Sure he slowly got a few ratings bumps here and there, but he was started so low (don't know why) it didn't help much.
He has the size, the jumping ability, the awareness, the hit power, the speed.....and more importantly the stats, to prove where he belongs on the overall lists. He is starting in this year's Probowl...although he might not be able to play.Comment

I don't mean to be some "sim" snob but I just wish there were more basic options and a share feature that allowed for a more refined NFL experience. I know this year they added manual ratings adjustments but that's not available in online franchise and I don't really think it's reasonable for anyone to manually adjust every teams player progressions every year.
I can't believe I had never read this blog before but I really hope you still have this POV about player progression and are advocating it for M13+.

Player attitude and morale needs to make a constant appearance in sports games... at least in franchise/owner modes. (Still trying to figure out why we should bother buying stadium additions)
So much of Madden's Franchise Mode is filled with fluff... I just don't know what to make of it outside of playing the games.
The ability to edit ratings has helped the longevity for me as I am in year 6, but my interest is dying as it doesn't feel like the NFL with drama and storyline.Comment

The problem with skipping out on performance is that it DOES mean something when someone has stats that jump out at you... even for one year. The problem is that SALARIES don't fluctuate with that.

It seems to be much more logical to have trainable ratings progression/regression based on coaching staffs and playing time with the physical limitations(ie height, weight, etc) along with physical ratings ratings(ie, SPD, THP, STR, ACC, AGL, and JMP) factored in to naturally cap them in a realistic manner. Have coaching staffs have some personnel unique base affect on trainable ratings along with player age and injuries having a base affect on physically ratings so there is some representation of progression/regression for every player in Madden, regardless of playing time.
This would potentially create an organic system that allows players putting up great stats to inherently progress due to maximized playing time and coaching influence, not because they put up great stats. It also would dynamically determine how much and how quickly individual players progress/regress in their Madden NFL career based on realistic factors like what coaching staffs they play under, how much they play, how healthy they stay, signing decisions and teammates.
Then make OVR a team unique value rating based on each players ratings according to each team's coaching philosophy before signing/drafting a player and have OVR increase/decrease on a signed/drafted team based on the player performance/stats with that team. So Wes Welker playing in Miami putting up marginal stats on that team could be a 65 OVR in Miami do to performance but be rated a 82 OVR by NE because of his ratings and their coaching philosophy.
This OVR would also determine depth chart positioning and team interest in signing/drafting/trading/releasing, while individual stats(2000 yds rushing, 25 sacks, 30 TD's, etc) along with player preferences(ie, sunny weather, Super Bowl contender, long term deal, etc) dictate each player's demands and eventual signing.
I often read it claimed that OVR is somewhat of a team value rating now in Madden but I have a hard time believing that since it seems a 99 OVR QB for the Raiders, is also a 99 OVR QB for the other 31 teams.Last edited by Big FN Deal; 01-18-2012, 04:07 PM.Comment

This man is correct.
Lee is ahead of him in yards,net yards,average,net average,inside the 20,punts returned for TDs (0 for Lee),return yards and of course the 49ers led the league in average starting field posistion on both sides of the ball...so in other words Lee is ahead of him in every single statisical catagorey related to punters except for longest punt and guess what? They have exactly the same number of punts. Do your research ratings team!
Also I think Newton is too high. He still threw a bunch of INTs.Comment

Exactly. Just like the article stated, Hines Ward saw his awareness drop 10 points, and that was done to help lower his OVR rating. Yes, Ward didn't play much down the stretch, but that really would have no affect on his awareness. He's known as a dirty player, but he's also one of the smartest.Currently Playing:
