Cougars put a scare in Stanford prior to 42-point run
PULLMAN, WA - The Cougars of Washington State are in the midst of the darkest period any Pac-12 team has ever had; it's been over five years since they won a conference game.
So for them to jump out to a 21-0 lead against powerful Stanford was more than just a little surprising.
But what happened after that wasn't. Stanford erased the deficit in a little over six minutes, and after Wazzu inched out a 24-21 lead in the third, Shane Williams took it from there, and the Cardinal ripped off six touchdowns in a row, turning a 21-0 deficit into a 63-24 laugher.
Williams' star continued to bloom as he threw for 560 yards and five touchdowns while running for two more. When it was all over, his coach was a bit flabbergasted.
"Well, I mean...we certainly need to start on time," Brian Kudron said. "Our attitude at the start of the game was terrible. We took our opponent for granted, we got too cocky and full of ourselves and reading our press clippings, and they punched us in the mouth for it. And we deserved it. Lucky for us, our guys got the message and found their focus. We've got a bye week coming up, and then the biggest test of our season, so we've got two weeks to erase whatever that was at the start of the day."
That biggest test he's talking about is top-ranked Oregon coming to the Farm on November 7th. Assuming the Ducks don't trip up beforehand, it should be the fifth time in five years under Coach Kudron that Stanford and Oregon will both be in the top 10 when they play.
