Game Notes | The Pac-12 North is still in Oregon's hands despite Cal beating the Ducks in Berkeley last week, but both Stanford and Cal can put themselves in position to steal the crown with a win in the Big Game and another loss by the Ducks in their final two games against Washington and Oregon State.
For the Bears, things seemed to be on the brink of disaster when Daniel Lasco, who ran for 1000 yards in 2013 and 2014, torn his pectoral muscle in the season opener. Diminutive sophomore Burditt Ernst has stepped up though and has 1395 yards on the ground and a dozen touchdowns, while junior QB Mark Allen manages the game. Cal's passing game is well below average, and its receiving corps is unremarkable. Senior tight end Richard Rodgers is their #1 target in terms of stretching the field, while senior wideout Jared Rush leads the team in receptions (40), but averages only 10.5 yards per catch.
Defensively, Cal is 3rd nationally in pass defense, but has been uncharacteristically suspect in run defense all season. Linebackers Jalen Jefferson and Nathan Broussard each have four sacks to lead the way, while linebacker Junior Davis and defensive linemen Mustafa Jalil and Darrell Outlaw, along with Jefferson and Broussard, all have more than 10 tackles for loss. Gibson is tied with cornerback Jose Smith for the team lead in interceptions with three, and leads the team with three forced fumbles, making him one of the best defensive playmakers in the Pac-12. |
