    2012 MLB Playoff Format

Has it been discussed as to how MLB 12 The Show will handle the possible addition of another playoff team to each league if MLB decides to implement it this season?

Is it possible to patch it in with a title update?

I doubt that there are customizable options that allow the user to essentially play with the new format considering the details have yet to be set in stone.

If this has been discussed in detail already then my apologies.

MLB isn't sure that they will add the 2 wild card teams at this time. If they are added it will not make it in to The Show till next year.
      MLB: Chicago Cubs
      NFL: San Diego Chargers
      NHL: Chicago Blackhawks
      NBA: Chicago Bulls

Baseball needs to come out and say that they aren't going to do it. The schedules are set, the playoffs will start well into October, and teams are getting ready for those scenarios. It's going to be better to wait until the Astros move to the American League.

As for the Show, I wouldn't put a bet on a patch implementing new playoffs.

MLB were suppose to have a decision by March 1st but I doubt that will happen.

The March 1st date is pretty much a hard date as a decision being made in order to figure out all the logistics of adding the two extra Wild Card teams as far as scheduling and TV rights and whatnot.

It sounds like it is going to be implemented this season which is kind of unfortunate that we will not be able to experience the true postseason format in MLB 12 The Show and I am not putting the blame on the developer by any means considering how late MLB has been with making a decision.

I would imagine to incorporate such changes would require a fair bit of work so, like others, I doubt we will see it this season in any fashion.

Personally, given the fact that the Astros are moving to the AL West next season and we will have interleague games everyday I think they should just wait and start the new format next year.

Being a Braves fan I certainly wish this new format was around last year.

But I don't like the direction MLB is headed by moving the Astros to the AL and having interleague play all year. The only way, ONLY, way I could even begin to accept that is if they have the DH in both leagues or do away with it completely. So much for what happened in 1973 when it was just suppose to be a temporary thing. Here it is 2012 with no signs of ever going away.

I was surprised to learn after reading some of the new CBA that no team will play more than 20 interleague games in a given year under the new deal. I initially thought that the amount of interleague games played would go up significantly considering it would be played each and everyday. Most teams played 18 interleague games as the schedule is today.

Concerning the new format and whatnot I posted this a few years back on what I had hoped would happen but knew it basically had zero chance of happening...

I don't see how it's possible to limit interleague play to just 20 games with an odd number of teams in each league. They would either have to shorten the season a ton or lengthen it a ton to account for a massive number of off days because of that odd team getting left out in the cold while everyone else is playing.

I just read your blog and totally agree with you. I have been saying for years that the AL have an unfair advantage in interleague play and that's why they always dominate it. People say the AL is at a disadvantage when they play in the NL parks without the DH but it's even more unfair when the NL teams play in the AL parks because the AL have a built their roster for the DH and have a big time bat in that position when most NL teams have to plug a utility player into their DH slot. I remember years as a Braves fan where our best option for DH was Keith Lockhart. Really! Who has the advantage there?

Totally wish MLB would go back to the balanced schedule. Always hated interleague play mainly because the schedules aren't fair.

In fact. I did some research of the interleague play schedules for this year based on last year's records and came up with a who has the toughest interleague play schedules this year based on last year's results. If a team ended up playing 2 series against the same team I factored added that team twice to make it fair like with the Braves having 2 series against the Yankees. My results? The Braves have the toughest interleague play schedule this year. Braves interleague opponents had a .540 winning percentage last year. But the team that we have to beat to win our division, the Phillies have one of the weakest interleague play schedules at .486. The difference? The Braves play the Yankees twice, Blue Jays, Orioles, Rays and Red Sox. The Phillies play the Red Sox, Rays, Orioles, Twins and Blue Jays. So the Braves play 6 games against the Yankees and the Phillies play 0 against the Yankees. How in the heck is that fair? The 2nd easiest interleague play schedule goes to the Rangers at .448. That's because they play the Astros twice, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Giants and Padres.

Well, this movement has been in place ever since the Commissioner dissolved the Offices of the League Presidents. The Commissioner's job is to ensure the stability of Baseball, and I feel that it will only be a matter of time before we see these changes. First of all, the expanded playoffs are going to happen no matter what. I was hoping that it wouldn't start until next year when the Astros come into the American League, but that might not be the case.

Second, we are going to see more of a standardization of the league. That means there will be a more balanced schedule with six division-five team setup. We aren't going to see more than one interleague game per series, and I would wager that the "cross town" rivalries are going to go away too.

Finally, this is eventually going to spell the end of pitchers hitting in the National League. The Commissioner is going to have to protect the senior circuit from more powerful hitters making an exodus to the American League. There also can't be a situation where the last series of the season has an interleague matchup that could decide who's in the playoffs, and one team has a disadvantage. Plus, it will go over well with the Player's Union.

I have a feeling that a lot of National League teams are going to be upset in the next few years....

I just want the same rules for both leagues. Is that too much to ask?

I doubt it will happen this year and hope it never happens. The game is designed to be played in warm weather and they are going to have players wearing snow shoes if the season gets any longer.

If they want to improve the game, eliminate the designated hitter.

I am sure it is the same way if a team is moving, changing uniforms that they half to give a year in advance notice this is exactly what happen with the Houston Astro's.

I guess if your a Brewer and Bud Selig you could get things done faster.
