    It's 2012... you're still playing this, aren't you?

I don't think there's another sports game with more replay value than Head Coach 2009. I found it collecting dust (been playing Skyrim a lot) in the old game drawer and gave her a spin.

48 hours later I don't know what came of my weekend. This game, for all of it's many faults (the in-game action is ridiculously bad compared to the graphics, gameplay and physics of it's sister game Madden 2009... and Madden 2009 was a POS) I love this game.

WHYTF isn't this Madden's Franchise mode? Look at this forum! It's 2012 and we're all still playing and talking about this game.

HC does franchise mode better than Madden, if you take out the gameplay.

The problem is that this game is a cult classic. those of us who enjoy it really really enjoy it, but we're nothing but a vocal minority. financially it doesn't make any sense for EA to make another one because they dont' think there are enough of us to sell any new potential head coach game to in order to even recoup costs, let alone make a profit. they're probably right.

as for making HC the franchise mode of madden? Considering your -average- madden fan, they probably view HC as too complicated and fear it would alienate the average player. they may be right on that too. a lot of people probably wouldn't take advantage of the ability to automate any part of the game you don't want to do, and just complain about all the "extra crap" (which, mind you, is the stuff we love) that the game makes them deal with when all they want to do is play football.

and finally, I love HC's "call the play, sit back and watch it" as well as "have your coordinators call the plays and sit back and watch them" modes, which last I checked madden took out years ago. they insist that I need to be the QB, and I am done with that.

I hear what you're saying... and I think that you're right sadly. I think the buggy, ugly and clunky "gameplay" of the HC's is what really drove the average Madden fan away in the beginning. Everything about the actual gameday gameplay sucks major balls. The player models look strange, the players behave differently if you watch vs. supersim (you can't run if you watch the play... you can't pass or play without INTs/Fumbles if you sim) and the presentation leaves a lot to be desired (I usually mute it so I don't hear my defensive coordinator lose his mind when we give up a first down).

I think the gameday gameplay was so bad, most regular madden fans, myself being one of them at the time, put it down immediately. It was also seriously broken on the release. I got it as part of the 20th anniversary or whatever pack along with Madden '09. The game had serious bugs (the save after Tuesday leading to huge FA demands bug... the music/sound cutting out... the sound BLASTING randomly... the game slowing to a crawl and then freezing) which probably wiped out another group of casual gamers.

The timed elements were also very strange. Anyone notice how you have about 15 seconds to decide certain important options and then you have nearly two hours to set your inactives list? And trade negotiating? I understand having a time element involved during the draft (and that should be as long as you've got left to pick), but if it's the off-season of before the deadline, why do you only have 2 minutes to work out a deal with six potential bidders?

We have pushed past these issues because the game, beyond these faults, is a great take on a simulated NFL GM/coach mode that could fit easily into the next iteration of Madden. The Madden fanbase is also getting a little more mature (theoretically). Some of us have had EA game since the Genesis or SNES. When we were kids it was all about arcade action. Now our tastes are changing. They should have a separate mode for it just like they do for NHL. You've got choices there from Playoffs, Season, Franchise AND Be a GM. Make this the Be A GM mode for Madden. If you don't want to do it, then you don't have to.

I don't know. Maybe we need the guys who did Kony to spread awareness of HC and its hidden awesomeness. Because you really need to put up with some stupid stuff to get to the great parts of this game. Or maybe take this all to another game maker and have them run with it. Money waiting to be made.

I'm still playing it because it's the best (and most fun) franchise mode I've ever played; for any sports game.

However, it leaves a lot to be desired and it scares away casual fans. But who cares, it's nice to have a game for the football nerds.

BTW, go vote in that best game of all time thing for HC09. Maybe together, we can pull an upset over FIFA 10.

I recently did what you guys did and pulled it out of a box and started playing it. I forgot how obsessing this game can be. It takes forever to get through a game and heck get through an entire season but watching the rewards you get from the scouting and the coaches progression is really rewarding to me.

I tried to finish my Seahawks Dynasty but I was fired. I was in Salary Cap Hell and couldn't get out. Ooops my mistake. I knew it was only a matter of time but it was fun while it lasted. I started a new Dynasty with the Raiders. I lasted a year and was fired after only having a 15 Approval. Good thing too cause I got the job with the 49ers who went 0-16 and cleaned house. I lost Singletary but thanks to the help of this forum I landed a few key coaches and didn't have to give up control off anything. I changed the Philosophies and chugged on my way. I landed a few key players in the draft....thanks Jack English and the rest of the class....and am looking up as my 49ers have soared to the 1st Super Bowl title in years for the 49ers. My coaching staff is slowly getting better and I am looking forward to finding some real gems in the draft. I traded my 1st and 2nd for next years picks and some late rounders. Lets hope I continue this domination and continue to have a good Dynasty.

                Man I love this game!

I finished the 2016 draft last night which was pretty meh... well, compared to other draft classes in the English Draft class. This was the Demetrius Covington draft and I was hoping to take the QB out of Virginia Tech (Destin Potts in my draft) compared to Donovan McNabb with my first pick by trading up (I've been doing REALLY well in the drafts and unloading guys before their contract years... I had five 2nd round picks) but the dude went first OVERALL. WTF? Way different from pats4life projection. He scouted at a potential of 90, which wasn't great, but I figured I only have a few years left and I was hoping to have a Hokie lead the team at QB. I ended up moving up to grab the LG Arby from Miami and then up in the 2nd round to take the QB compared to Billy Volcek. I don't know what to trust in the scouting now as Billy Volchek was not a superstar, but this QB has a potential of 98 as a Field General. Andre Woodson (currently a 93 overall, maxed POT)... you have just become expendable.

I'm 3-0 to start the 2017 season with the Redskins. I'm simming through most of the regular seasons now as we're by far the most talented team in league. I'm really close to the cap this season but I have some room next season. I've got a bunch of guys near 90 near 30 years old who are on their contract years. Going to be a season of tough choices.

Nice man! I have been letting my Draftees leave after their 3 year contract is up. My 1st and 2nd rounders sign 5 year contracts so they stay for a while but I am not big on resigning my guys unless they are 90+ Potential and have plenty of years left.....plus not having to overpay. I am not one who likes to budge. If a player won't take Package 1 then I don't resign them. Well that is unless they are a 99 OVR. I will gladly give them what they want since they are the reason I win games.

I just found an old Dynasty in which I was the Patriots. Man that was an easy Dynasty. I just went into the 2012 offseason with the Sweetney Draft Path. All my coaches are 99 and my GM is nearly maxed out. Its an easy Dynasty and I just sim the entire regular season and am always promising the Super Bowl. 4 Super Bowls in a row. I am waiting for Tom Brady to retire cause once he does I am screwed. I have yet to draft a QB who can take over for him and I sense the Brady Era is coming to an end.

Anyways congrats on your success. I am looking forward to eventually making it through an entire Dynasty. I would have a sense of accomplishment.

I'm usually the same way with the guys I draft. The only big name Free Agent I went after (way before I knew what I was doing) was Lankford. Had I know that the English arc had a nearly world-class LT in every class, I would've save the money. He's great (a 97) but he's expensive (I think I signed him for something crazy, like 9 years, 70 million with as big a bonus as I could get to offset the cap hit). Having an expensive LT is just not using your money right.

I learned a lesson there. Drafted smarter, never really dealt with Free Agency. Franchised a couple of guys just to trade them during the draft. That's why I had to draft a QB in the Covington class (2016). Woodson is asking for 11 mil per. Too much with all the other guys I need to sign. Going to sell him to the lowest record team by week six and hand over the reigns.

This game... I get jazzed just thinking about it. Can't wait to start a new dynasty with maybe an AFC team.

Maybe if we all go to easports.com and post how we all want a new nfl head coach game and how we all still play it, then they will make a new game.

The game had so much potential, I was so disappointed some of the cooler things in HC06 were gone. I don't think they put nearly enough effort into it - but even now, I'm still playing. Just started a new franchise Sunday. I never get tired of it - and I don't sim every game or read the draft paths - I just play. I guess if I knew everything that was going to happen and didn't play any of the games it'd get old- but so far, so good. I wonder how much it costs to develop a game like HC? Prob not nearly as much as we think. Time to play the lottery!

Aura, just so you know, you can look at the draft paths. Its not gonna ruin the game. If you dont have the exact same philosophy someone else set it to, the players wont be rated the same, or even play the same.

Not trying to peer pressure you or anything, i dont really read them either. But if I know I have a DESPERATE NEED, Im not afraid to take a peak at ebongreens info. He doesnt really give everything away, just notes on people that fit a balanced system and whether they have a good attitude or not.

Besides, if you have a gm with the 3 school insider special skills, you're looking at a draft guide anyways... Again, not saying anything against that, I do it so I dont have to waste time each week in the season scouting. Id rather just scout in the offseason and have the gm do all the heavy lifting in the regular season!

                              Suppose...

Sadly though I think we can be all but assured there will not be another head coach game. They couldn't even release one till next August when Madden is released, and with the nextgen consoles on the very near horizon, there isn't going to be a draw for a fringe/specialty game to get developed for the nextgen for many years. And while EA sucks at life and monopolizes the NFL, we won't get one from any other publishers either, even though I'm sure there are some who can do as good, if not better.

No one knows if the nextgen will be backwards compatible, or if they make this game backwards if they do (they didn't with 06) - but I know I'll be playing head coach as long as my 360 is still kicking.
