Imagine if Madden hadn't removed these features....

Thought it'd be fun to list the features that have come and gone. As I posted elsewhere I think simply keeping the features and adding new ones would have made the game great.

Now I don't know about programming games and i understand that MAYBE you have to drop features to incorporate new ones. I'm not BASHING Madden here.

What I am doing is listing past features good and bad that if left in the game would have at least left me happy to have the option to use them when i wanted:

(note.....many features I'm going to list were not popular but no matter, I think they should be options for those who do like them).

    1. Vision cone....simply put I could tell in an instant the difference in Qb awareness and how it affected my approach as a QB. I remember doing a Vikings chise and using Tavaris Jackson. His cone was so narrow I had to stare the receiver down and go to the one guy on most plays....very realistic. When i played as Peyton all my options were in my field of vision...I just like how that felt.

    2. Coverage assignments....in real life I can choose who my #1 corner will cover. ie. if I'm playing the Pats, even if Welker is a slot guy I want my best cover corner on him.

    3. Weapons....I thought this was cheezy at the time but I found it alerted me as to when backup DB had come into the game so I could go after him. As it is now the cpu may sub and I don't know it...in real life they know who's coming into the game. The only other solution would be to notify the user that "so and so is replaced by what's his name".

    4. Tony Bruno show and newspaper articles......sorry I loved these features. Not that the didn't get old (although there seemed to be more commentary variation than the game commentators had). But here is why I liked it. One day while doing roster adjustments I had the Bruno show on (never really cared to have the music going...didn't feel like football unless it was the NFL films stuff..anyway...). He starts talking about the great day some rookie QB had...USING HIS NAME....I had been simming the games that weren't Vikings...and i'm like..."who the heck is that"...so I went to the box scores and sure enough he'd thrown 4 TD passes. I just it was so cool.

    5. The ability to build new stadiums without moving the team.....now i heard that there was a licensing issue here...I don't know....but not having the ability to build my vikings an outdoor stadium where I'd actually get snow and sub freezing temps....(yes the game did this).....is frustrating.

    6. The halftime report and extra point shows....yeah they were a bit lame..but it added a realistic feel to the game and broadcast...think about it..they actually went to the studio during half time to check highlights and scores from around the league. Implementation was faulty but boy was the idea a great one.

    7. Scouting other teams....i loved in my chise scouting another teams players to find weaknesses and strenghts...it was also cool to Scout my own guys to see what they said. "Joe Blow would not be a starter on most teams, or so and so needs double coverage etc."

    8. Draft board rooms, working out pending draftees and the college allstar game......even the Mel Kyper grades on the draft. All added a realistic feel and depth.

    9. Mini games or drills against real players.....how bad were the mini games against the Giant Tackling Dummies (the player silouhettes aren't much better).....I liked the 3 on 3 drills vs real players though. i spent much time honing tackling and other skills doing this. Now they are so graphically unappealing.

    10. Sub packages and easier substitution menus...remember when you could call a play, highlight the position and then click to sub in your backup RB?

I'm finding I could go on and on....I'll let others finish this list if they like. I'll end on an appeal (and those who think i'm bashing will be pacified with this).

"Dear EA, since you've taken out so many features that I liked, I'm appealing to you this year to leave some nice features you currently have in the game. Namely:
    1. Scouting during the season.
    2. Team and player entrances.
    3. Stadium blimp overviews.
    4. The ability to practice in my franchise.
    5. The current slider system (although they need more for special teams).
    6. Cut scenes...but feel free to add some more.
    7. The ability to get scouting reports on rookies without working them out yourself....although i like to do this, sometimes I don't feel like working out 20 guys...its easier to just read a report sometimes.
    8. the 75 man roster (I sim preseason myself but it seems like a very popular feature to many).
    9. The ability to edit players in franchise...just starting loving this. as I'd have to get a free agent FB due to injuries and the only guys left are 38 ovr...i can pump up some levels (awareness at 18?????) to make them serviceable. Heck I can even create a beast RB if i feel like it. Nice job here.
    10. I know I'm missing some....you guys can add to this list also.
"I'd rather lose to the cpu with realistic stats than win with ridiculous stats."

Re: Imagine if Madden hadn't removed these features....

Very solid idea for a thread. This was seemed to be standard practice for Tiburon for YEARS. I recall in Madden 02/03 they had online franchise, and rather then continue to develop it, they dumped it completely for a very long time, only to reintroduce it only recently. This has been a trend for them. Either leave a feature as is, or scrap it completely. They very rarely would develop a feature past introducing it. It's a shame really because Tiburon has had some solid ideas, and just refused to build upon them. Perhaps it was turnover in the dept or limitations to the consoles/code? They also struck out with ideas like create-a-fan, and create-a-coach and it makes me wonder what was scrapped to make those happen.

your #2 coverage assignments is actually in the game and has been since madden 10. but i agree with everything else. all of that stuff is what made the ps2 days games complete. i mean you can barely compare the franchise in this gen to last gen....its so incomplete it aint funny. all they had to do was just expand all this greatness and tone up the graphics to an acceptable level. instead they removed everything feature wise and made the graphics the best part of the game.

It wasnt broken back then either, it actually worked as of now it doesnt work properly when someone makes a substitution which leaves that assignment sitting somewhere covering no one on the field at all.

I miss the true halftime reports and injury updates from the ladies who use to voice them in the game. I believe it was Jim Brown in studio back on PS1 who did the Pre, Half, and Post-game shows back then and its been missed ever since.

Not only did all that happen, but it also updated you on other in a way NFL Redzone does!

Lets keep adding or working on features to get them working as they were thought out instead of subtracting them each and every year only to re-introduce them!

Glad this is gone. Looked stupid, and was a waste of time. It was just visual feedback. What we need are the names under the players when we click the L trigger to see who is on the field defensively, just liek when we see our players names.

                    10. Sub packages and easier substitution menus...remember when you could call a play, highlight the position and then click to sub in your backup RB?
This is also still in the game. When you call a play by formation, you can flick the Right thumb stick and they have a ton of package substitution presets, and you can hit the Right Bumper to do individual substitutions.

WR Flip, Spell HB, Dual HB [where the #2HB replaced the FB] and all sorts of other packages. In goal line there is a Tampa package that used the DT at FB like the Bears did with the Fridge and the Buccs did with Sapp. There is also a "Patriot" package that uses linebackers like how NE did for a number of years with Mike Vrable.

Go into practice mode and see for yourself. Get used to what packages are available. They are not difficult to use. Sure, if you are playing a game and trying to use it for the first time it can be confusing, but that's not an excuse. Once you know what you can do and how to do it, it's really fast and easy. On defense I run the 3-4 and in different alignments I like to use OLB flip or DE flip to put Justin Smith and Aldon Smith in different places.

regarding 1st bold....yeah....you could put that on a list of new things they SHOULD put in the game...and I agree it's better...BUT...I'd take the other thing now over nothing.

Regarding second bold.....I must be a putz....people keep telling me things are in the game and I never knew it......I guess I didn't explore the menus much. Then again the great instruction booklet we get should have told me SOMETHING.

I realize there is a philosophy difference with many of us. Some would rather have something that doesn't work that great in the game instead of not having it at all. Others would prefer the latter. Oh well....to each his own.

I still think the feature needs tweaking because if I go to assign more than the top two receivers, my coverages get all messed up. I'd like to set a backer to only take a halfback or a safety to take the TE, but like smoke said, when the CPU subs, you could wind up with a backer on a wide out or a corner covering no one.

Tavaris Jackson needed medical attention with a cone sliver that small... I am PROUD to have been a driving force to have the function removed as I forwarded a 1400 word college paper to the devs so they could read all the reasons why QB Vision was worse than having to lick one's own skid marks.

If this function hadn't been taken out, I'm 99.999% sure that I would have retired from video games forever. Absolutely, unequivocally, positively the WORST FUNCTION EVER!!!

That said, lets end on a positive note about functions I'm fond of...

                              1) Play Editor - play design is essential to the game of football. Since I draw up plays that fit my reads and progressions using my pencil and paper (15 years of plays I've designed), I'd like to use them in a Madden game without waiting for a dev to see a real team using my plays in a real game first. Chuck Noll designed his signature "Trap" play on a napkin for God's sake! Bring back the Play Editor!!!

                              2) Mini-Games (meaningful) - The DB Swat drill is and forever will be the most valuable drill because the skills it builds are useful on Offense, Defense, and Special teams. The ability to maneuver to the proper spot and time our 'catch/swat' is essential and the most used skill for those that swear by USER control. We need a place to develop.

                              3) Online Win/Loss Records - I hate quitters. The approach this year was to remove these to reduce 'cheese' online. Unfortunately, it created a situation where you were unable to calculate how many of a players losses were the result of their DNF%. If I'm playing a guy that's 90-10, with a 10% DNF - I know he quits/disco on every loss. I wouldn't want to play him. If I meet a guy that is 10-90 with a 10% DNF, he's likely to stay in games regardless of the score and I'm more apt to play him. As it stands now - I'm flying blind and having to make an uninformed decision based on one number.
