Re: New Era In the Garden - Boston Celtics Dynasty

A New Era In the Garden
By Area Code | OS Dynasty Reporter

The end of the "Big 3" came when the Boston Celtics were swept in the second round of the 2012 playoffs by the Miami Heat, the eventual NBA champions. This early exit cut the Big 3's time in Boston early. Ray Allen and Jermaine O'Neal both retired. Allen was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Why wouldn't he be?

Kevin Garnett didn't get the contract extension he wanted, so he went to the Atlanta Hawks through free agency. The Celtics front office decided to cut ways with the aging veteran. Its now up to Brandon Bass and JaJuan Johnson, who they organization is big on right now, to make up for the loss of Garnett. Something that wont easily be done.

Paul Pierce is still in Boston, as he is still under contract. He has two years left on his contract, and its too early to tell if he'll be coming back, or if he'll decided to hang it up. We'll see what happens two years from now.

With the cap space freed up from the departures of Allen, Garnett, and others, the Celtics signed some key players. Not star players. But players they thought would make a positive impact on the team, and help them win a championship. Listed below will be the free agents the Celtics signed:
  • J.R. Smith, SG - 5 years, $25.26M
  • Daniel Green, SF - 5 years, $11.52M
  • Spencer Hawes, C - 5 years, $36.06M
Smith and Hawes will start immediately for the Celtics. Smith is replacing Allen while Hawes is replacing O'Neal. This squad has a mixture of veterans and youth. A combination that has proven it can win championships. Pierce and Rondo will continue to be the leaders of this team. Only time will tell if this will work in the Celtics favor. Either way, there's a new era in Boston.
