Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
It never ceases to amaze me how difficult EA seem to make a CRUD (Create Read Update Delete) operation out to be - this isn't exactly the first time basic database operations like editing a record didn't make the cut due to "time issues".
My god, throw together a UI with the appropriate fields - use designs already done for other screens as a launching point - link those fields to rows in the database and there you have it - an editing form! It is literally that easy, and if for some reason it isn't, then EA, you are doing it wrong.
Hell, if there already is an editing component for Play Now rosters, load the logic and design applied to that into CC and there you go. I'm sure Madden is coded in a modular manner where code can be reused rather than duplicated - just about any object oriented language basically forces this to be so.
It is so puzzling I can simply not believe that some other reason than the tired "out of time" excuse isn't at play here. I dunno what, but this is stuff an intern could knock over in a day. I would LOVE to hear a proper explanation by EA about why taking the editing components on rosters and applying them to the same table of data that lives in a CC save file is so damn difficult.Last edited by Nza; 06-14-2012, 03:55 AM.Comment

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
Honestly to me, & say what you want, but I think CC is the single worst addition to ever happen to Madden. People are saying that coach mode is the same as Franchise mode. Uh... no it isn't. I play offline & Franchise mode as I know it is having the ability to control all 32 teams, make roster edits, make realistic trades, play any game I want on the schedule, etc. As a uniform geek I was extremely excited for this year w/ all the new Nike equipment being added & the ability to use that equipment to edit players, & now that all that has been taken away, I feel like I've been repeatedly kicked in the nuts, especially after how long we all begged for complete editing, (and to have Looman say last year how it was important for it to be in game because that's what we wanted) only to have it taken away. To me that's completely unacceptable & total b.s.
But at the same time & as hypocritical as it may sound, I'm still going to buy the game because as someone who has loved Madden & loved playing football video games going all the way back to Tecmo Bowl, & with no other game out there, I have no choice. I'll find some way to enjoy playing it, even if I have to act like I'm playing a dynasty by simming a NFL schedule in Play Now mode. I'm really hoping that editing gets added via update or before the game is released. But with the way things are going there's no way in hell I'm counting on it.Comment

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
Despite my grousing and grumbling, I'm very lucky that this mode seems to have been catered to a football fan just like me - know a good chunk of names and roughly what's going on with 31 teams, intimately acquainted with the Pack, feel very stupid looking at Senator Palmer and LBZrule posts - that I have escaped wounds from the omitted features.
In many ways, it might benefit me to not be able to tinker under the hood. Much as everyone on here is right when they bring up issues, sometimes I feel like I look at this board a leeetle too much when it comes to forming an opinion on the game, and end up feeling frustrated that it doesn't play perfectly on a stats level at least.
This way, with it being all closed off, I might just accept what EA give me, not even fiddle around with sliders except the game clock, and quietly get immersed in a franchise mode that makes me care about the hard decisions week to week and the fantasy players in year nine.
Take of that what you will of course, I'm openly admitting I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and humming to enjoy the thingComment

I'm not happy with no player editing, not being able to control all 32 teams, and not being allowed to manage your staff.
However, I will wait a few weeks after release and see what the community has to say about the game as a whole.
The new surrounded the 'closed' nature of CC has toned anticipation for Madden 13 a lot though. I was hoping for a improved offline franchise experience and it appears that CC is the future according to EA.
Time will tell and I will let things play out before I decide on a purchase. I just love the NFL too much to say I will not purchase at this time and I do like my Madden even though it's been had it's issues.GT: Herkyalert

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
I know I will be in the vast minority on this one, but I miss good old fashioned single season mode. I just want to take an offline team, play 16 football games, hopefully make a run at the post season, and then start over with another team.
I know there is an audience for the additions we have seen in sports gaming the last 10 years, so it is great they have added them. But can't there be a mode where I am not bogged down by tweets, general manager duties, distributing RPG experience points and the online features that are constantly shoved in my face.
I know, I know, I am old and grumpy.Comment

Just like I know so people could care less about offline franchise, but that's something that is very important to me. Each gamer is different and the change EA is making is causing other things to be taken out due to time or choice.
In game saves, and stadium creation in franchise are examples of things taken out that were great features in the past.GT: Herkyalert

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
That game, to me, provided the most enjoyable franchise experience I've ever had in a video-game...and similarly to 'Connected Careers Mode' it also lacked many of the traditional franchise-mode features; somehow I made due and still very much enjoyed myself.
Josh Looman was the man in charge of NFL Headcoach'09...so even though I will miss having certain freedoms that had become a staple of the franchise, I'm still excited to see if he (and Donny Moore) can re-capture the magic that made NFL Headcoach'09 so special; the Madden series will benefit immensely if so.Last edited by DLaren; 06-14-2012, 09:01 AM.

Not at all. I'm an online gamer that plays online franchise only and the game made huge strides towards a near perfect experience with CC. I mean it sucks for you offliners but me? I don't give a damn bout roster edits.“If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball.”-Phil Jackson

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
Well....I'm hoping EVERYTHING ELSE is stellar....that the AI makes good decisions that replayability is so good......I'm going to buy or rent it right away and try it...but I'm keeping Madden 12 just in case. I never used to control 32 teams or edit rosters until forced to recently.....so if the game is that good maybe I won't have to.....BUT....not being able to play other games????? Why? why? why?.....i used to love to play the big monday night matchup, or the thanksgiving games or the battle of undefeated teams.....man this really sucks......really really hoping that the positives outway this."I'd rather lose to the cpu with realistic stats than win with ridiculous stats."

Re: Sound Off: Has the 'Closed' Nature of Connected Careers Turned You Away?
It all seemed too good to be true.
Now after this week's bombshells that you cannot edit players in connected careers or play any other games in the mode other than your own, it seems like the Madden team is once again forcing you to play your game their way. To me, this is a huge problem. Others of you? Maybe not so much. But let's hear it: Has the 'closed' nature of Connected Careers turned you away and/or cooled your enthusiasm about Madden NFL 13?
Sound off!
