I think a lot of it has to do with percentages, rather than the triggered animation. I haven't done a conclusive study, but obviously the higher up the slider is for shooting foul the more likely you are to get a call.
Helping draw fouls:
Taking a dribble (isomotion) before shooting.
Pump fake/under and under
Drawing the second defender off their feet.
Receiving a pass before shooting.
Each of these you use increases foul likelihood in my candid opinion (again, I don't have any hard numbers). My understanding is that the more likely your shot was to go in, the more likely you will get a foul if the defender makes contact. (Good Shot Selection = More fouls)
I rarely get foul calls trying to go around a person one on one unless i have them conclusively beaten and they foul me from behind.
