Moving On: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (MLB 12: The Show)

The Cardinals were on top of the world in October 2011. The team had won the World Series, dispatching the Texas Rangers. But all good things must come to an end, and the Cardinals had an offseason they would rather forget. The team lost one of the best players of all time, as Albert Pujols took his talents to the west coast and signed on with the Angels. Manager Tony La Russa decided to call it quits, leaving the team in the hands of rookie manager Mike Matheny. The Cardinals took the money Pujols left behind and signed Carlos Beltran, while bringing Rafael Furcal back as well. 2011 surprise Lance Berkman would take Albert's spot in the field, moving to first base for the new season. Perhaps the biggest addition for the Cardinals though would be the return of Adam Wainwright, who missed their championship season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.

With no clear favorite in the NL Central, the Cardinals still have a good chance of returning to the playoffs in 2012, even without Pujols. And as they've proved with their last couple titles, once you get to October, anything can happen.

                            Series Preview

                            vs

Cincinnati Reds (6-4) vs St. Louis Cardinals (5-5)

                            Game 1: Mat Latos (1-0, 4.26) vs Chris Carpenter (1-1, 2.57)
                            Game 2: Johnny Cueto (0-1, 3.27) vs Adam Wainwright (0-0, 3.38)
                            Game 3: Bronson Arroyo (0-2, 7.20) vs Kyle Lohse (1-1, 2.77)

The Cardinals host the Reds for a 3-game series, desperate to see their offense get back on track, after nearly getting swept at home by the Chicago Cubs. Rafael Furcal, Matt Holliday, Lance Berkman, and Carlos Beltran are all struggling, making it difficult for the teams to score runs. The pitching has been outstanding of late, but the Reds offense is very intimidating, and the Cardinals know they will likely have to score a lot of runs in order to win the series. While it's still early, the team is already 3.5 games behind the first place Milwaukee Brewers, and they will not want to lose anymore ground.
