If they don't want to sign deals with all the mask artists, then why not just give us a custom mask designer feature like Skate 3 has?

Should be easy to implement that kind of feature since it's already in another EA game.

What people need to keep in mind, and someone can certainly correct me if I'm wrong on this. Wouldn't EA in alot of cases need also the mask artists' permission to use their work? Also wouldn't those people seek compensation from their work being used in a commercial product?

I'd imagine it comes again down to the NHL sku having a much smaller budget than say a Madden or Fifa or NBA2k.

This is correct. When I was working on NHL (many moons ago), I was told that to get authentic masks for all 30 starters at the time would cost about a million bucks.

Authentic masks were in NHL 97 on the PC. It would be nice if they could get that license back.

They never had that license. They used authentic masks without the artists' permission.

I bet it's only Brodeur's mask. Remember last year when they added authentic intros for SJ and Edm we all thought more teams would have it but NOPE. Regardless nice to see them trying...Bring on 13!

Good point considering Nascar 09 has paint booth that let you do custom work.

Sorry, couldn't resist. There's a thread over at the EA forums about this. The community manager said it was a "unique opportunity" or something like that, so I doubt we see anyone else's mask this year.

They would still have to provide the assets within a licensed game to do that, though, wouldn't they?

For example, Peter Budaj’s mask features Lionel Messi and Ned Flanders from the Simpson. The fact that licensed imagery is included in the design would prevent us from ever being able to recreate the mask in-game.

That's an extremely bad example. I get the general idea but as they already have the Simpsons game lisence and Messi lisenced for FIFA I don't see why that specific mask is such a big problem.

By the time I was on the game, most mask artists wanted individual deals.

so ok they cant get the license for every mask i get that, but at the same time it seems like they dont even try to get it for those where it would actually be possible, like in that case marty brodeur. like they get to know by chance from brodeurs brother that he holds the right on his mask design.. how abt sending requests concerning that matter to every goalie, i mean not always a family memeber will drop by to encourage them...

Simple.

Add roster sharing so people's created "ala my historic 1993 roster" for example can be uploaded and enjoyed by all.

Add "mask designs" that can be downloaded online, I know a bunch of amazing people that are dedicated to get their favorite goalie's look right.

Have a server that we can upload/download from! I can't believe how simple it can be, just borrow the technology under your own umbrella from the Nascar paint booth team.
