Re: Martin Brodeur's Authentic Mask is in NHL 13 and Why Some Others Won't Be

You guys realize typing forum suggestions and calling them "simple" in no way makes building and integrating the actual feature "simple," right? Easy to type, likely a lot harder to put into the game especially when you consider everything else they have to do in ~8-9 months before NHL goes feature complete...

A custom web app that let us create custom masks (so talented people could recreate and share the masks and circumvent the license) would be awesome

Re: Martin Brodeur's Authentic Mask is in NHL 13 and Why Some Others Won't Be

EA PR: So why not just cut a licensing deal with the artist for the rights to include the mask in-game?

ANDY AGOSTINI: Well there are bunch of reasons, but here’s what it most often comes down to:

Often, the artist has used imagery that is fine to use in an artistic manner, but not for a licensed product. For example, Peter Budaj’s mask features Lionel Messi and Ned Flanders from the Simpson. The fact that licensed imagery is included in the design would prevent us from ever being able to recreate the mask in-game

So, for the record, that's 49 masks that would not be tied up in licensing issues (atleast not for the reason they have any copyrighted/trademarked imagery on them)

'If we got all 30 starting goalie's masks in, wouldn't people be just as upset 6 months down the line when half of them had changed and another group had been replaced?
        Um

Your Game Comes Out In September, it would be completely understandable and understood I think by the community if their were goalies that by season's end who has outdated masks compared to what was in the game at the start of the year. We just want to see some effort.

RE: Brodeurs Facebook announcing in May that the mask was going to be in the game

Yup. But he's not bound by the same legal restrictions we are.

Had we advertised is and then he retired, we wouldn't have been able to put it in the game. Then people could have sued us, saying that they bought the game because we said the mask would be in there.

Also we weren't ready to talk about it then. We try to keep what we're talking about focused so that the message gets out as much as possible.
If he retired, you would have had like 2 MONTHS to retract their announcement if they really wanted to. And for god sakes, you can still have the mask in the game, just included it as another piece of equipment in the creation zone. The idea someone would SUE EA over this is so preposterous also. Also, yeah we know you have the worst * horrible marketing strategy in the world as far as rolling out information.

But you still want them to go out and pay all the artists / goalies for the licenses to use the masks in the game, especially when most goalies will get new masks early in the season (making the old ones out of date) anyway?

That just seems like a hilarious waste of money, time, and resources to me.

You mean just like the legend mode recently brought in right?

As I stated in my post, I think most people would be happy to have AUTHENTIC masks in the game, regardless as to whether their out of date by a couple of months. Also, the number of artists they would actually have to contract to get their masks in the game aren't as plentiful as you would think.

Well in my opinion, your completely wrong as far as it being a waste of money considering how much money and resources the division has devoted to things in the past, but hey, it's not the first time I've disagreed with your opinion anyways.

Also, thanks for not noting how horribly silly Andy Agostini looks for pointing out a MAJORITY OF THE TIME, it's issues with trademarked/copyrighted images, when in reality, no, it isn't.

Look, it's probably not fair to have any expectation for EA to strike multiple deals with these artists. They could atleast make SOME effort to get some of them in the game though.

http://www.daveart.com/ this guy does a ton of masks for goalies in the league. Are you telling me they couldn't strike some sort of deal with him to get some of his work in the game?

That's not how licensing works. Having a license to produce Simpsons games is different from putting Simpsons properties in other games. Similarly, having the rights to put Messi in FIFA does not mean they can start putting Messi in any other games.

Im not going to quote the post because its to long, but that list of masks without copyrighted images is great, but they would still need to get the artist permission or pay them in order to use them. Martys was simple he owned the rights. I guess in theory EA could gather the same list and call each artist and ask, and I hope they did, but I'm not holding my breath. I would be happy with a custom mask maker option or even if they just made some new generic ones and put a little more imagination into it this time

i just hope that EA remove all the USELESS mask options...like that off classic mask. i mean..cmon now, nobody wears them in NHL games. its a great addition for sure but not in NHL games like that in BaGM modes. i just hope that we can customize the goalie masks.

but hey..goalie customization could be a great addition in NHL 14

                        Good point!

But I think the blowback is that what is currently out there is poorly untilized and hasn't changed since the Eric Staal cover year 08 I think? Not saying they need something new every year but, it's time to change up a few that are totally out of place now. Any idea if they have they kicked the tires on paint shop for the NHL game (Masks & boards)?
I dont remember there names but they were allot of fun....

Yes, some of the masks will be outdated but A. that will be understandable due to a September release and B. It would still be much cooler to have Henrik's 3 month old mask in the game as opposed to having very generic options.

And how do you want them to pay for that when you're budgeting things like the skating engine, presentation upgrades, AI, GM Connected etc?? I don't disagree, it would be nice to see more real tender masks. But as a feature in my mind, it's far lower on the importance rate as core gameplay additions like the aforementioned features.

This year marks the biggest leap in core gameplay additions since 07, I think we can cut them some slack on authentic masks.

I don't disagree, it would be nice to see more real tender masks. But as a feature in my mind, it's far lower on the importance rate as core gameplay additions like the aforementioned features.

This year marks the biggest leap in core gameplay additions since 07, I think we can cut them some slack on authentic masks.
Love the complete over reaction on your part (and it's not the first time Mr. Superiority Complex) And of course gameplay is on top of your priority list as it's seemingly the only thing you care about from any of your posts (or atleast the ones I've seen)

For one, my posts in this thread were to point out some of their faulty logic in some of their answers to questions, not to say THIS YEAR MASKS MUST BE IN THE GAME. As an immersion thing though, and if they plan on improving the art direction of the game going forward, I think it's something they should seriously look at. The goalie equipment in the game is excellent, why not go all the way? It's something that will force them to expand their financial resources, of course, but I think considering their improvements in making meaningful ascetically changes to the game, it's a natural progression step.
