Re: NBA 2K13 Interview with Producer, Rob Jones

When creating Signature dunk packages in the past, we’d assign a player anywhere from 5 to 30 signature dunks. Whenever a player stopped doing a dunk or stopped being able to do a specific one, the system wasn’t flexible enough to allow us to remove it without forcing that player to a completely different package.

Now, our packages per player can be adjusted by removing a mini-pack and adding another, or removing multiple ones. A player’s arsenal can therefore be modified much more easily than we ever could before.

I swear on everything I love they got this from me.

Letting us choose the individual dunks and layups would make almost every player's package unique and more realistic.

Also, perhaps there should be separate sections for selecting half-court dunks and solo-break dunks. This way, the windmills, 360s and through-the-legs dunks in the half court will be a thing of the past.

the way he answered the first question made it seem like there won't be dribble packages this year just a difference in how fast certain players can do them from each other or atleast that's how it seems idk. Other than that I like what I've seen/read so far

I don't think there will be dribble packages either! There's certain stick movements that do certain dribbles and better ball handlers will have "prettier" moves. At least thats what I gather

            Awwwwwwww.

I was looking forward to editing dribble packages this year.

Hopefully they keep the same sig shot system as 2k12. A lot of players are going to need tweaking in that area (Ala Demarcus Cousins. He shoots nothing like he does in 2K.)

Given the more organic nature of the dribble mechanic (Control Stick), will we see more signature dribble packages and moves? And what has been done to ensure a distinction between elite ball-handlers, average and poor ones?

While Signature movement and animations are still part of the very fabric of the NBA 2K experience, our ball handlers are differentiated less by the actual signature animation, but more by the animations they get, the speed of the moves, the effectiveness of the moves, and the ability to retain control of the ball when doing the moves.
Well, I'm glad he answered my question...somewhat at least. My actual unedited question was...

Given the more organic nature of the dribble mechanic, are signature dribble packages and moves still present? And what has been done to ensure a distinction between elite ball-handlers, average and poor ones?
Either its more complex than a yes or no answer or just a flat out no to dribble packages, which it seems to be. I am definitely disappointed if that's the case.

I hope somehow that to the same extent that more slick animations are available to good ball handlers, there are more simplistic animations for mediocre ball handlers. Or, if they could remove certain moves like the half spin and step-back from guys with low ratings I'd me marginally satisfied.

If so, then that's yet another element of control removed from the consumer's hands. That places even more pressure on 2K to "get it right".

I do standing floaters all the time in 2K12. You have to be in or near the paint, and press the shot button + the left stick away from the basket.

i don't get it. 2k12s dribbling system was awesome. Why didn't they just move all the LT + LS moves and animations to the RS.

I'm pretty sure they have moved all the dribble moves to the right stick in some form, including moves that require the left trigger as a modifier.

As to why they changed the way some moves are done, they want to make the right stick movement as smooth and intuitive as possible. 2K has has always been known for weird fighting game combo commands and they obviously want that negative image to be left behind for a more approachable control method.
