Makes ya stop and think if nothing else. Now, I don't condone never punting or playing in this fashion nor do I do it myself but after reading this I may be a lil less judgemental over those who do. I know personally I think I'll start going for it a lil more often than in the past.

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
Its a great philosophy for football given the numbers supporting it, doubt anyone would actually try in the NFL IRL; though it would be nice to see along with a modified A-11 offense (to be legal within the rules of the NFL) combo. -

I look down on people who don't punt when it's 4th and 18 on their 12 and they barely connect for a 19 yard completion.Comment

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
To be honest I like playing people who go for it on 4th and long at their own 20. Stop em and it's guaranteed points for me. If you win on the first three downs why can't you win on 4th? 4th down isn't some magical down where 1st downs are automatic lolComment

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
I look down on them because they aren't getting anywhere doing it. They're playing good defense on me, I'm playing good D on them, except the difference is they're not punting, and I get the ball at the 30 yard line every drive. I love players who do it though.Comment

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
The only reason it will never happen in the NFL is because most head coaches make decisions based on risk aversion. When playing madden the risk is much lower (a game vs. your job) so the reasons to go for it should be increasedThe Red Zone: Indianapolis ColtsSeason 1: 18-1 Super Bowl ChampionsSeason 2: 16-3 AFC ChampionsSeason 3: 16-3 Super Bowl ChampionsMinnesota VikingsSeason 4: Coming soonComment

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
Well said, and also, I think the bottom line is that in madden I am sure the percentages, if they were added up for every game played in madden this year, of 4th down conversions would be insanely high, insanely high. Again, sometimes the "well in real life" argument just doesnt work because the game isnt 100% realistic. There is no such thing as a wildcat glitch or money play in real life."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

If I'm past the 50 and not close enough for a <50 yard kick, I usually go for it if I have less than 10 yards to get.

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
excuses,excuses...the reason people go on 4th is because they are immature children who dont want to play defense because "its boring" and if they dont succeed a couple times on 4th and it blows up in their face, they quit instead of letting you have satisfaction for stopping them..Going on 4th in a videogame isnt about personal strategy. Its about a win at all cost, screw you attitude by immature people who think " theyz gots game"
it will never happen in pro and college games. No one cares about a high school coach who might do it alot. It wont become a normal thing...I dont think ?Comment

Re: To those who look down on players who never punt:
The biggest issue I have with the article is that in using the yards-per-play statistic, it doesn't account for defenses bending to give up a long gain on 3rd and long but still force a punt. For example, allowing a 10 yard pass to be caught on 3rd and 18. When defending against a team you know will go for it on 4th down, that defensive philosophy shifts a bit and those "free" yards don't happen as often.
There is also the point someone else made earlier. In high school, giving the ball up at your own 30 may not result in points if you can force a 3 and out in high school but at the high-FBS and NFL level, you're handing the other team points. This means when you're running the percentages of how many 4th downs you'll get, you need to account for at least 3 points for each 4th down you don't get.
Personally, I'd love to see a coach at that level give his strategy a go and see how it fairs at a higher level of football than high school. Would definitely be interesting.Comment

I dont care if my opponent punts or not, Its up to me to have enough skill to stop them. I do notice that most of the people who dont punt online end up quitting when you stop them, but I dont care as long as I get my win.Comment
