Do cornerbacks matter in Madden 13?

    Hey guys,

Do you think it really matters if you have good to great corners in this years game? This could apply to any Madden, I guess.

One of the reasons I ask this is because I was wondering if it's worth drafting them in the higher rounds? Thoughts?

I wouldn't say the overall matters that much . But certain stats inside of their overall rating do matter a lot . For example the raiders , they are so fast and have decent hands that you end up throwing picks left and right if youn aren't careful.

I started playing with the Jets, and now if I play with anyone else I notice a definite dropoff in pass defense. They go 3 deep with solid CBs including Revis who is a legit shutdown corner. So yes if u have guys with 90s press and man cover ratings you they matter. Otherwise they all mostly suck

So when I scout I should look at the prospects speed a great deal? I know speed is important (obviously) but should it be one of the first attributes I scout?

I'd have to say, this year...a lot of good players matter all over. LBs are a lot more all over the place if they are actually good since they get the tackles now. CB seems to be the same way, I didn't even risk passing to Revis when my friend played with the Jets.

For a CB the first things I scout are speed, zone coverage and man coverage. If those are good I might look at awareness and play recognition, if it's going to be a high pick, otherwise the first three are all I really care about.

In what round do you typically draft your corners?

I've been playing with the Jets this year. From what i've gathered, Revis is a near shut down corner in madden terms. He's got the Awr/Recognition and Man coverage to keep the coverage tight. Cromartie's got the physical statue for it but not the skills (think is play rec and awr are a good bit lower) but he's still decent with his coverage other than that he can't tackle for ****.

Jets got 3 legit CBs, 1 is near lockdown while the other 2 will do a good job making the windows tight. For me, after playing with the Jets, if I need to look for corners it'll either be for athletic one's (tall, quick) who can use their body to break up plays. Only way I'd look at sub 6'0'' cbs (Revis) would be if they have elite coverage ratings.

I depends on my team needs and the draft. In my Bears franchise I have Tillman and Hayden both are 80's so I don't need one in the first 3 rounds. (I should say that I scouted from round 3 on though, cause guys do fall.) I just scouted my main three and left it at that since I would be looking at a 3rd or probably a 4th string CB. But, in the next few years I am going to need one so I'll look at getting one in the first two rounds and I'll dig deeper in to them.

edit: oh, and on every player I scout I look at scheme.

I differ from this poster. I look at speed, agi, acc, man.
If those are good then I look at play rec, awareness, press, zone.

One word of warning, until it gets patched press is not that important for your #2 corner and teams typically don't press the slot.

Those are good too, if you can get a guy with good intangibles you can always "teach" him how to cover.

I also like guys who make plays. I've had Landry on the Jets make great coverage plays, even though his core coverage isn't great and he's a S. I think it's a combination of ratings and the quality of your coverage will deal with the offensive play call, the defensive play call, and your defensive player stats.

Basically, there isn't really a certian type of CB that = shutdown. It's really what your D enforces. If you constantly give up runs and have to defend 3rd and shorts you'll want a different set of CBs than if you are a team that forces the pass most of the time. If you CB fits your entire D strategy then they'll be more valuable then a guy who is perfect in only 1 aspect of the game.

Scheme and playing style should be first two things you look at.

than you look at attributes for that playing style.

if you want run the defense the raiders had with Nhmadi a few years ago with alot of press man.

look at his press, man, tackling attributes

if you want a defense like the jets with alot of man to man

look at his man, awareness, play ball

if u want a defense like steelers

look at zone, tackling, play recognition, awareness

                            balance cb

man, zone, awareness, play recognition, play ball, tackling

Intangibles helps also boost everything up i think. you can have a cb like revis but if your intangibles low he won't make plays like revis.
