Yes, Attacking AI is better but it's at the expense of the Defensive AI as they could barely deal with the AI last year. They went from the extreme honing-missle tackles to all-out contain. The demo has some really good teams with top defenders like Kompany. Seeing him ignore fundamental defending principles makes me upset. Defenders consistently put themselves on the wrong side of attackers in the box or even worse give them space. On what level of footy do coaches/managers teach defenders to NOT close down in the box inviting pressure and allowing attackers easy entry into the box? Defending as a team is non-existent. How many times have you given up a goal in FIFA and said to yourself, "How the hell was he onside?" only to go to replay and see one of your defenders is totally clueless or just standing still. Team defense is a mixture of pressure & contain (think zone defense) with man marking principles.

Movement is still highly unrealistic with no regards to locomotion, consistent foot-planting. Players can turn on a dime two or three times in a row with no stamina and/or acceleration/deceleration penalties. It's not just attackers who exploit the lack of a foot-planting but defenders can also tackle and send in challenges due to lack of real reaction times. There's a time for pace but on the highest levels of the sport pace is mixed in with skill, a flick past a defender, a dip of the shoulder and accelerate, catching a defender flat-footed using their momentum against them (you can do this to some degree on FIFA but it's usually the result of unrealistic turns or stopping on a dime cuts).

The pace in '13 is even faster on default then '12. I thought the pace in '12 was pretty good and one of the advantages over the other game. I loved the fact that I had to build-up the majority of my attacks. Build-up play makes for better counter-attacks. When you're constantly fast-breaking up-field it cheapens the counter IMO because they happen so frequently.

Where are the player/team individuality traits? It's 2012 and players/teams still don't have signature styles. Every professional game should have these. NBA 2K does, Madden does, the Show does. Why not FIFA? What's the point of having all these licenses if the majority of the teams play alike and nothing like their real-life counterparts?

Why did they add "Total Dribbling" yet ignore the fact that everyone in FIFA can dribble the same with both feet? Even on all-manual there is no difference between passing with the stronger and weaker foot. This ties into foot-planting but imagine having to think about what foot you're on when passing? It would help to imitate all of the decisions you would make if you were out there on the pitch which ties into my next gripe

Get rid of full assistance. I'm sorry but just hitting a button and having the CPU pick out the player, power, AND placement of the pass is just too much IMO. Most players are already at a huge advantage because of the camera angle we play on (Tele) which allows us to see the field equally (you can see the runs in front of you as well as your options behind and laterally) so why not force people to use some skill? It would make the First Touch Control better because you'd have to think about the amount of power your placing on a pass. Passing is one of the most beautiful things about this sport and those who master it like Pirlo and Xavi have cult-like followings but with full assistance you're neutering players who make their livings off their vision and ability to hit out passes.

These are my biggest gripes with the Demo and this franchise in general.

Please don't take my negativity as someone who is just looking to trash the game because I play some of the other game. I think FIFA has the potential to be great but it frustrates me that they cater to a different user-base. If any game has the ability to do a 180 and NOT lose customers it's FIFA. Licenses & online modes alone will carry sales for this franchise.
I am thoroughly confused about which game to get this year. I am now leaning towards FIFA. It's like the election - LOL!
When the game is on the line, winners want the ball.

after playing the demo countless times, i finally noticed what was wrong with the game. player reactions when they are off the ball. looks like sometimes, the AI turns off, and thats why we feel like our defenders lack some awareness or sense of anticipation. its a bug, i have seen this kind of thing in other games too, most of them are FPS games.

well, i was thinking about tweaking the sliders to make the game better, and after about 2 hours, i think this set of sliders is really good.

My FIFA 13 experiences thus far,

The Bad: An obvious card worthy foul on the CPU given a no-call by the ref despite his looking right at it
EA SPORTS FC is the next chapter in The World’s Game. Join the club this July.

The Good: David Silva begins this play with an outlet from his own end(not shown) before eventually continuing his run and scoring the goal.

I have enjoyed the game more after trying some of the slider adjustments. Thanks. I have found for my own preference the CPU pass error needs to be maxed. I also turn up marking a little for my team which seems to keep them in better positions in the box.

It feels better, or at least the CPU makes some errors, but Ive come to realize the AI logic in FIFA is broken. Period.

It is the same for many EA games. I don't think their AIs have been rewritten in a decade - just tweaked and messaged. What held up 10 years ago has long been surpassed and expectations are higher. You can patch over cracks but it doesn't make up for a crumbling foundation. Disappointing because EA Sports games do so much right. The innovate great ideas, are loaded with features and have a lock on licenses. When it comes right down to it though, they all suffer the same core problem - from Madden to Tiger to Shift - they never learned the fundamentals before learning how to windmill dunk.

Sliders can help tone down the unhuman abilities of the CPU but no amount of tweaking is going to give FIFA a futbal IQ. It didn't for 12 and it won't for 13.

Sorry, but that is just my take. Nothing wrong with how the game is and for the fans I am sure FIFA 13 will continue to be the action packed, adrenaline pumping game - especially online. But for me it is not a realistic representation of the sport and not a game I am going to invest in.

I agree that they can do more on team individuality but I certainly feel there is good player individuality and there are plenty of player individuality traits. As for dribbling, I see a big difference between bad dribblers and good ones.

                  Different year, same crap.

Sorry, I buy FIFA every year because of licenses and what not but this is seriously not good enough. The game is played at a frenetic pace 99% of the time and players can still turn on a dime and jam the turbo button while asking for assistance from a CPU-controlled second player.

Yes, they fixed things like not so many easy breakaways and immaculate first touches. But this game is clearly catered to the average joes who know about soccer but don't really watch it, yet they will dish out $60 a year on this game because of the arcade-like speed of it all. It's like playing an NBA game on a bigger field, so back and forth all the damn time.

Ever see the computer try to kill off a game instead of go for another goal, which leaves them exposed at the back? Ever see a CPU team try and bunker down and counter? No, because they all play the same.

Sad times we're in, in terms of soccer gaming. Nothing out there is quality and this is coming from someone who has dished out lots of money on games over past decade.

Only way this changes (and it would take a miracle to happen), is if all of us diehard gamers who visit boards stop buying it. Yes the casuals and rares will buy it but if a good chunk of us don't give EA revenue, then the message might be clear that they need to cater to us, too. By buying the game as is, they're just going to keep churning out the same crap over and over with minor adjustments that they tout as 'great'.

If you are talking about marking a player, It allows you to cover a certain player on the other team with a player from your team so that they will try and stay with that player. Kind of like plaiyng man to man if you will.

I don't. They fix some things wrong from last year's edition every year but have a whole bunch of new errors that will be fixed next year, etc., etc.

I thought the same thing actually, but I've never played football competitively so to tell you the truth I'm not actually sure what his assignment was. Maybe someone with more pull than me can get this video to someone who can do something about it. CPU marking was at 66 BTW.

After playing some more of both demos.

PES is the much better game on the park. The ball physics, manual passing, player creativity to get into space etc ... makes for an unpredictable and exciting game. The player modes on PES are complete and utter pants.

Meanwhile fifa is the opposite. their menus, leagues, licenses and career mode are excellent, but the gameplay feels stale and the mechanics of the players and movement and ball physics make for predictable gameplay. Every 5th or 6th game on fifa is exciting and gets me out of my seat, the rest are just meh ...

Especially after playing 400+ games of fifa 12, it's just hard to get excited over the game in terms of buying it.

It might be 6 months of NBA2K for me ...
