    New to FIFA

I received a free copy of FIFA 11 yesterday, but I've never played a FIFA game, and don't really know soccer rules at all.

So where do I start? Any suggestions? What's the best part of the game?

I was mulling over your question and the best answer I could come up with was to play and figure it out. The beautiful thing about soccer is the rules, they are really simple and make sense.
My teams: Cowboys, Knicks, Braves, Arsenal FC, Nittany Lions

Well the rules are easy, it's the tactics and the order of play that's tricky. My advice is to play with some of the big name teams of the world and learn how to use the controls. I would set up a match such with some of the high rated teams and learn how formations work. Learn how to use your key players and slice through the defense. It takes some time, but it's a fun game to get into.
      Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

I cannot agree more, and there are A LOT of teams, so you can't get bored with just one.

Thanks. Rules might not be the appropriate term. Here are examples if what I'm talking about.

          1. One of the most confusing things for me is the clock. "Injury time" or "extra time," I think it's called. How is that handled in the game?

          2. And speaking of injuries, isn't there a rule similar to baseball, where if a player leaves the game, either by substitute or injury, he can't come back in.

          3. Which teams are considered the best? Which are considered the worst?

          4. Is there a franchise mode, a la Madden, NBA 2K, etc?

Really the only thing you need to know about is offside

                1. Injury time is simply the time during the game that action was stopped due to injuries and so forth. Just like in a real game, FIFA will tell you how many minutes are left in injury time (but will not show the injury time ticker).

                2. Yes, if you have to substitute a player, he can not come back in. And you only get 3 substitutes per game.

                3. Best team, you might have to break it down by country:
Spain - Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletico Madrid
Italy - Inter Milano, AC Milan, Juventus, Roma
                Germany - Bayern Munich, Schalke
France - Lyon, Marsailles, PSG, Bordeaux
                Netherlands - Ajax, PSV
Scotland - Glasgow Rangers, Glasgow Celtic (The best rivalry in sports, period)
England - EPL is a really deep league, you could realistically win the league with about 7-8 teams. Man City, ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton.

                4. Yes there is a Career Mode where you can start a a player, a Player/coach or as a Coach.

More newbie questions. (Sorry. I haven't played soccer (football) since 8th grade, and that was 30+ years ago.)

What's the difference between a free kick, a direct kick and a penalty kick?
