Looking to get an older FIFA

I've played the last couple of FIFA demos, I've been looking for some variety in my game library, and I've heard all sorts of great things about this series, so to put it simply, I want one.

However, instead of getting 13 when it comes out tomorrow, I wanted to pick up an older version because I'm also planning on getting NHL (if the CBA's ever worked out) and last year's Madden.

(I also want to buy an older FIFA because: I don't follow soccer, so as of now I don't really care how close the rosters are to current ones; I've never been a fan of playing sports games online beyond Ultimate Team; and I frankly don't know much about soccer itself, so I'd like one that's somewhat simple to pick up and configure the way I want to.)

    Apart from what I've mentioned:
-What exactly are the equivalent of Franchise and RTTS/Superstar/My Player on this? I play those modes a lot, and I was wondering what game did it the best over the past few years.
-Outstanding presentation isn't exactly a must, but I'd prefer that the graphics aren't ugly and that the commentary isn't annoying, boring, or otherwise awful.
-Little extras like custom music (in-game or in the menus), Gameface, or tutorials are a small, but always awesome, plus.

So what game in the series should I get?

You'd do well to pick up any of the recent FIFA's, FIFA 11 might be your best bet.

There's quite a chunky career mode to sink your teeth into, as you can choose between being a player or a manager (or both).

The presentation isn't huge but it's not altogether terrible, and the graphics are pleasing enough. The commentary is pretty much par for the course when compared to other sports games, however FIFA 11 comes with the added bonus of being the last one to feature the great Andy Gray ad Martin Tyler's partner.

As for custom sounds, you can import your own music for the menus and import chants which you can then assign to teams to hear in game.

I'd suggest FIFA 12, for the physics improvements. You'll enjoy the Be a Pro mode. You'll be able to pick up FIFA 12, tell it you're a beginner, and the game will get you rolling.

Without a doubt FIFA 12. The defending in the game was changed up dramatically. If I were u I'd start FIFA 12 on ultimate team and have a blast.

Yeah, sorry. I saw "older game" and immediately discounted FIFA 12, as it's still the "current" game. But yeah, FIFA 12 is a definite improvement on 11.

If you really wanted to have some fun with an old FIFA game, I'd suggest going all the way back to FIFA 98 or World Cup 98. I'm only half-kidding...they had cool soundtracks (Blur, Crystal Method anyone?) and are still enjoyable to play (relatively speaking to today's advanced control options and HD graphics, and enjoyable in the same way that I enjoy ping pong). You'll immediately see some things it took FIFA until FIFA 12 to fix, like how running into your opponent was the only way to steal the ball. Obviously it's only possible to play if you have a PC or PSX emulator, or a PS2, but it's terrific fun.

But FIFA 12 is okay, too.

You wanna good soundtrack, FIFA 2000 would be the best for me. That had some genuine toe-tappers on it.

Thank you, gentlemen (I'm assuming). Your letters aligned into legible English words are appreciated. If I've got the wrong idea here and should just say "screw it" and get 13 though, then feel free to tell me.

As for the soundtracks, Blur isn't exactly what I had in mind. (And I do have a PS2. Still pop in Sly Cooper or NCAA 06 every once in a while.)

FIFA 10 remains my favorite FIFA, so I'd recommend that one.

edit: older ones have the added bonus of refs actually calling fouls. They used to exist in FIFA games, believe it or not.

YES. Andy Gray was the best. I always felt like he offered constructive criticism and encouragement when I did something stupid in FIFA. Unlike Allen Smith's: "a collective groan from everyone there, what a poor decision" lines. He can suck it.

If a player career is a big factor in your choice, I'd say screw it and get 13. The player careers in the previous games are, in my opinion, not that great. There's not that much depth in the modes, also the ai is pretty bad, took a lot of slider and tactic tinkering just to get it somewhat acceptable, still teammates were idiots. It's always the first mode I try first, this year they got it right, never had so much fun with fifa, still only 2 days in. So yeah, I strongly recommend 13.
