    2012-2013 College Hockey Thread

I have my tickets, the air outside is getting crisp, and the NHL is being depressing. Therefore, it's time to make this thread.

A bittersweet season is on hand, as the days of the WCHA are being ruined by the Big Ten Network and Terry Pegula's insistence on Penn State having a (most likely bad) hockey program. The Big Ten just isn't going to have the same luster as it does with other sports because they're breaking up too many traditional hockey rivalries.

Now that I got that rant out of the way nice and early - LET'S. PLAY. HOCKEY.

To all you folks out there that live in the Northeast and Midwest: If you're a hockey fan and haven't tried it out yet, this fall is a perfect opportunity to jump in to college hockey. Check out your local team, you will not be disappointed.

    Re: 2012-2013 College Hockey Thread

Every year I tell myself to watch more college hockey games, but seems like I never do. Maybe it'll finally change with the NHL lockout, I honestly can't watch sporting events when I have no clue who any of the players are. I'm trying to get into WHL a little more, maybe I'll do the same with college hockey.

Wonder just how much exposure Ill get to games. Might be a good thing to throw on the TV if I get bored.

My d3 college team is a powerhouse. Will definitely be attending more games to get my hockey fix.

Like ITT said, midwest and NE OS'ers who have not watched college hockey, check it out this year while the NHL is locked out. It's a great brand of hockey, and I personally enjoy watching it more than the NHL.

Some games will be on the Big Ten Network, along with Friday nights on the NBC Sports Network

Penn State is the main reason I have growing interest in NCAA hockey. Lol

It's unfortunate because we have to leave the WCHA, but there is a positive side. New people (like you!) will be introduced to a great sport. Along with the increased exposure on channels like Big Ten Network and NBC Sports Network, I think college hockey is headed in the right direction.

Now hopefully in the coming years a few other B1G schools decide to add hockey.

I'm also looking forward to being in a conference with Michigan

Western should be able to continue the success they've had the last 2 years. Keeping Dekeyser around for another year is huge, and even with the loss of some key seniors I can see them repeating as CCHA champions, especially with Andy Murray as head coach.

I'm also hoping the NHL lockout doesn't interfere with the Great Lakes Invitational at Comerica Park. It would be awesome to see Western play outside, especially against MSU and possibly Michigan. I'll be pissed if it doesn't happen.

What does the NHL lockout have to do with that? Was/Is it tied in with the Winter Classic?

Yeah I've always been interested in college hockey. I watched several games last year. There is just not a lot of exposure in the South Jersey/Philadelphia market so I never had a rooting interest in anyone. I know we (Penn State) are wrecking college hockey by causing the formation of the Big Ten and ruining old rivalries but I'm excited to see them play Big Ten schools. It will be fun. I agree with you though and I hope more Big Ten teams start up a hockey team. I always thought that Northwestern would be a good candidate for that.

It was a part of the Hockeytown Celebration of hockey festival or whatever it's called. There are a number of games being played at Comerica Park, including the Alumni game, GLI, and a couple OHL and AHL games. I'm just worried that if there's no Winter Classic, there won't be a reason to have the festival since the marquee event won't be happening.

I could see Northwestern and Illinois.

And believe it or not, I have heard that Iowa actually has a respectably popular club hockey team. So that is another option.

My prediction for the first two are Iowa and Illinois.

Who would've thought that Iowa has a hockey team? I had read an article from 2011 saying that Purdue wants to join. That could get the conference to 9 if your predictions would be right.
