    Re: Offline Penalties

By default period length, I'm assuming you mean 20 min periods?

If that's the case, then 20 min periods, with penalty sliders in the middle(meaning set to 3), we should be seeing around 4 penalties per game.

Just using this alone, you can see NHL averages:
Visit ESPN for live scores, highlights and sports news. Stream exclusive games on ESPN and play fantasy sports.

The median is about 3.7 minor penalties per game(highest is about 4.7,lowest is about 2.98)

Also...to avoid poll spamming(like on the ea forums), can mods on this forum set the poll to allow us to see who voted, so we can see if one section gets spammed, if it's by actual members on this forum,or new people who signed up to spam.

      Re: Offline Penalties

I play 10 minute periods on all star and I rarely see more than 1-2 penalties, and that usually includes one or two taken by players under my control.

It is quite common for me to see zero penalties. I just played a game in online gm mode (7 minute periods) where the only penalty was when I tripped up a player myself.

In NHL12 penalties were too few, but they weren't like this. 12 never bothered me that much, but 13 has a major penalty issue IMHO.

The only exception is be a pro mode for me. I see the CPU taking lots of penalties in be a pro offline. This is the only mode where I see them regularly.

The default is 5 minute periods (clock shows 20 minutes but it is time scaled). If everyone answers based on different settings I won't be able to make much sense of the results. If you want to give more specific information reply to the thread, but answer the poll for 5 minute periods if you can.

The median is about 3.7 per team per game, so in terms of the poll it would be 7+. We also need to keep in mind that penalty time is slowed down in game, so 7 penalties will prolongs the game quite a bit and the proportion of PP time to even strength is skewed relative to real life stats. Short of playing full 20 minute periods something's gotta give.

          Re: Offline Penalties

Checking 2011-2012 NHL stats the avg. number of Minor penalties per game was around 8 for two teams combined.

Using five minute periods 1 per would be max.

I voted less than three minors.

The odd major here and there would be nice as well.

I have no objection to the thread settings being changed to show who voted... I don't see any way to change it myself.

              Some voted 7-9 penalties!

They must be assuming 20 min. periods?

I went with 3-5 using the default though I play using higher minutes.

                  Re: Offline Penalties

                  Penalty time scaling helps alot.

EX-Lets say I'm playing with 10 min periods, I'll make penalty time scaling be set to the middle slider, meaning that for every 1 second in real life, 2 seconds will go off the PP clock)

So in real time,a period would take 10 mins to play, and a powerplay, would last for 1 minute

Regardless of the period length, it should always be 7-9 penalties combined, per game. The biggest difference will just be penalty time scaling. So as Redshirt_EA said, 5 min periods is considered default, meaning we could still see 7-9 penalties with 5 min periods, the penalties would just last 30 seconds in real time(based on penalty time scaling)

Minimum 1 penalty per team per period and toss in the occasional fight or two takes you up to 7-9 pretty easily.

Coincidental minors every once and a while would be nice to see too.

                      Re: Offline Penalties

I think if the slider worked, giving extreme results at either end, there wouldn't be a need to script a certain number of penalties per game to fit what people believe is the correct amount.

                        Re: Offline Penalties

According to ESPN team stats, penalty minutes per game last years for teams are between 8.04 and 16.07. The middle of the pack is around 11. Say that's 5 penalties. That means 10 combined for both teams. Don't forget some penalties overlap, meaning some PPs may only be 1 min. long, etc., but fighting majors give a quick 5 min. That's what I wanna see in my games. I guess I'm the only one that voted 9+.

But as has been said before, if there was a slider that worked, everyone could play how they liked, whether it is very little (like 3 or less) or a lot, like I want, at 9+.

Period length(in video games) shouldn't determine how many penalties are seen. 5 min or 20 min periods, the only difference that makes is how long the PP lasts.

20 min periods, the PP would last 2 mins in real time

Geez i never even considered the penalty time scaling coming into effect.

Still though, what would happen in a 20 min. period if 7-9 are called in a 5 min. period? Would the fact you scale the penalty time affect how many would be called? Kind of confusing to me, lol.

Penalty time scaling just impacts how long the penalty lasts in real time(so if you wanted, you could have a 5 min period, where penalties last 2 mins in real time)

Penalty slider(in the rules section) should determine how often you see penalties.
