    Friday Night Lights: The Revival

Here's the skinny: As Coach Eric Taylor and his wife, Tami, were beginning to pack up for Tami's new job and Coach's new coaching gig in Philadelphia, Dillon Exempted Schools called and offered Ms. Taylor the job and title of Assistant Superintendent. Without much deliberation, as both their hearts were and always would be in Dillon, Texas, she accepted the job offer, and the Taylor family kept their roots in Texas.

The rumor around town is that Dillon, the town, did not want to lose Coach Taylor after he had brought state championship home, albeit not for the Dillon Panthers, so the superintendent of the schools decided it was in the best interest of the students (of course, the students...not the athletics) to have Tami Taylor as his right-hand....woman.

No matter the circumstances, the decisions had been made: Coach Eric Taylor was returning to coach the East Dillon Lions.

This is a very basic setup for the time being. I am new the site and am still figuring out the best way to display information and post graphics to make this all more reader-friendly. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

This dynasty will follow two teams, the East Dillon Lions and the Dillon Panthers, and is the product of a current online dynasty, which is being played out by me (East Dillon) and a friend (Dillon). Season One is in the books, so the first few posts by me will be recaps of the first season and the general information that needs to be presented.

One of my main goals is to be as realistic as possible, as I try to maintain realism throughout all my NCAA dynasties. With that being said, because my friend and I created both the East Dillon Lions and the Dillon Panthers, you will see recognizable names that, if you watched the show, should not match up in terms on who played when, i.e. Vince Howard as the quarterback on East Dillon and Tim Riggins as the running back for Dillon.

    Platform: PS3 - NCAA 13
Sliders: Modified throughout season one from OS Community Slider Project
Teams: Created -- East Dillon and Dillon for UTSA and Texas State
    Difficulty: Heisman
    Quarter Length: 8 minutes
    Rosters:

Two notable changes: Notre Dame was moved to the Big Ten because in my perfect world, that is what Notre Dame would do. Ohio University was added to the Big Ten for three reasons: 1) Balance the addition of Notre Dame; 2) Both people running this dynasty went to Ohio U; and 3) We wanted to see if Ohio could take on the challenge. The first year for them wasn't pretty...

              NCAA: Let's Move Ahead

              Indianapolis (IN) -

In a shocking decision, the NCAA today ruled to force all planned conference realigns to officially take place before the start of the next college athletic season, which is scheduled to begin July 5, 2013. It is a move that was widely unexpected, and a move that could further alienate both membership schools and conferences from the NCAA.

President Mark Emmert, speaking moments after the momentous decision, said that while the forced alignment "could seriously disrupt some planning in the short term, the overall benefits outweigh the negatives." He added later that "change is inevitable and also never favored. However, in the best interest of the NCAA and college athletics, we, the leadership, felt it necessary to move ahead with the planned realignments. This way, we hope to seamlessly transition to the new playoff format next season, the 2014 season."

In response to the decision, many college football coaches could not be reached by phone or email, and those who were able to be reached expressed deep chagrin toward the announcement. One prominent college coach, who asked to remain anonymous, said, "It's absolutely ridiculous that the higher-ups felt the need to act upon this now. Waiting one year never hurt anyone, except the fans. There is more at stake in this whole setup than the opinions of a few thousand out-spoken fans. Did Roger Goodell become the president of the NCAA? Ridiculous."

To recap from an earlier post in the Sun-Times about the proposed college football realignment, the changes are marked as follows:
              - The Atlantic Coast Conference will add Pittsburgh and Syracuse from the Big East Conference. Pittsburgh will join the Coastal division, and Syracuse will join the Atlantic division.
              - The Big East Conference will add Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, and Southern Methodist, all from Conference USA; Boise State and San Diego State from the Mountain West Conference; and Navy, which was labeled as Independent.
              - As a result of the massive turnover in the Big East, there will now be two divisions: American and Patriot. The American division will be comprised of Boise State, Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, San Diego State, and Southern Methodist. The Patriot division will be comprised of Central Florida, Connecticut, Navy, Rutgers, South Florida, and Temple.
              - The Big East Conference will also add a conference championship game, which is scheduled to be played in Washington, D.C., this year.

Don't have too much time on my hands this week, so the "Reserved" posts will be disappearing as I have time to update.

Schedules and statistics from Season One have been posted, though.

                      2013 BIG 12 MEDIA DAY

                      Dallas (TX) -

With the dawn of another college football season quickly approaching, Big 12 head coaches descended on Dallas for the Big 12 Media Days, held in Cowboys Stadium the past two days.

Excerpts from both Eric Taylor (East Dillon) and Wade Aikman (Dillon) are provided below:

We won four out of our last five, qualified for a bowl game, and beat a nice Michigan State squad, but I'd bet anything that if you asked my players what their expectations were before the season, they'd say a Big 12 championship. With that said, this season will be better. Experience is key. A couple things from last year that I'd like to point out. Tez Rodriguez, in my opinion, was one of the best linebackers in the country last year. I don't care what anyone has to say about the 'backers at Dillon. I feel honored to have coached Tez and I wish him well in the NFL with the Houston Texans. Vince Howard was not a good passing quarterback last year. Hell of an athlete, but he was simply not as good as he needs to be to lead this team. He has worked hard over the summer and I expect bigger things from him this year in the passing game. Finally, I have to mention and applaud the work the defensive backfield put in last year after our close win against Kansas. They went to work, switched up some schemes with our DC, and played really well to end the year. I'm looking for more of that this year.

Our goals for this year? Win our division. Challenge for the Big 12 championship. Play in a New Year's Day bowl game. Beat Dillon.

Thanks, guys. Have a great week.

                        East Dillon's Howard Suspended

                        Dillon (TX) -

Just days before the opening game of East Dillon's 2013 season, news comes out of the university that starting quarterback Vince Howard has been suspended for the first two games of the season. The Lions are set to open their season August 25, in Pullman, Washington, against the Washington State Cougars. Howard will also miss East Dillon's home opener, an August 31 tilt against the Rice Owls.

The East Dillon Athletic Department has declined comment on the matter, but one high-ranking official at the school, who asked to remain anonymous, hinted that Howard may have been suspended after Coach Taylor and Buddy Garrity, athletic director, found out about a lunch meeting Howard had with a booster for the school.

"It's an unfortunate situation for anyone, not just because it's Vince," said Coach Taylor. "I'm not going to get into the details, as they are between me, the school, and Vince, but I'm hoping he will learn from his mistakes and play twelve games for us after sitting out these first two. He's a competitor, always has been, and it will bug him to no end to be watching from the sidelines without a jersey on. This is a teachable moment for him."

Coach Taylor went on to add that junior quarterback Sam Seals will get the nod for the starting job against Washington State, but also mentioned that true freshman Richard Larson will get some snaps as well. "If all goes according to plan, Richard will be in there to play some quarterback for us. He was recruited to be a QB, and we'll hopefully get a look at what he can do for us."

As of press time, it is still not known for certain who Howard was meeting with over lunch.

                          Second Half Surge Dooms Lions

                          Pullman (WA) -

No ears were safe from Coach Eric Taylor's profanity-laced tirade in the visitor's locker room after the East Dillon Lions' late collapse and defeat against Washington State this past Saturday.

In all fairness, East Dillon's troubles started well before the game when it was announced that starting quarterback Vince Howard would miss the season opener as part of a two-game suspension. However, even with Howard's suspension, things did not look so bleak for the Lions to start the game.

Junior quarterback Sam Seals, starting for the first time in his career, played well in the first half, leading his team to a 19-6 lead at halftime. Seals looked sharp on his throws early in the game and was cool and collected while leading the Lions' many drives.

                          Things eventually changed.

"I'm not entirely sure what happened," Coach Taylor lamented. "Sam was very accurate to start the game and then his accuracy completely left him. I've never seen anything like it. It was as if I was watching a video game and the computer just took over the game. It was unreal. We'll have to address that this week."

Once Seals lost his accuracy, Taylor brought in freshman quarterback Richard Larson to lead the charge.

"Things looked nice with Richard out there. He was able to lead some nice drives, but we couldn't capitalize and finish our drives. That was inexcusable."

When Larson went down with an injury late in the third quarter, and with Howard out, Taylor had to turn back to Seals.

"I looked him in the eye and told him to go get us a win. Unfortunately, that didn't happen."

On what looked like a broken play, Seals stumbled backward to avoid pressure from the Cougars, was ultimately sacked, but not before fumbling the football. The Cougars scooped up the loose ball, returned it for a touchdown, and took the lead for good.

"That really broke our back," said Seals. "It was a dumb play by me. I really can't blame anyone else for that. That's on me."

Mysteriously, star running back Luke Cafferty, he of a 1,420-yard rushing campaign a season ago, carried the ball only 12 times for a total of 36 yards in the game. He did add 9 receptions for 84 yards but was never able to make it to the endzone.

Before leaving the locker room and the stadium, Coach Taylor commented on the lack of rushes for Cafferty. "I'm not sure what to tell you. I trust our offensive coordinator immensely. With that said, he brought in a new system when he took this job over the summer. This system might not be right for us."

                            - Chapel Hill, NC

The first quarter started out slow with both teams only scoring 7 points a piece, but saw Prince Alexander get injured on the first drive, forcing the prodigy J.D. McCoy to come into the game and take over. Dillon was clearly sticking with their gameplan coming into the season and that was to pound the ball down the opponents throats. When the first quarter was over, it seemed like this was going to be a slobber knocker.

However, the 2nd quarter went much differently, seeing zero points for North Carolina and a defensive slaughter from Dillon putting up 21 of the 28 points in the 2nd quarter. 2 fumble recoveries for TD and an INT return for a TD on top of a Tim Riggins run put Dillon up 35-7 heading into halftime. Coach Aikman seemed fired up going into half. He loves when the defense comes up big and that they did in the 2nd quarter.

The third quarter saw a lot of ground and pound from Dillon just milking the clock with the huge lead they had built. Following a FG, Dillon was driving down the field again when a fumble was returned for a TD by North Carolina, their 2nd TD of the game.

Following another field goal, North Carolina scored a garbage time TD with 0:27 remaining when there was no chance of coming back and tried an onside kick. Coach Aikman seemed insulted by this and drew up a fade for a 34 yard TD pass to McMillan and the clock was run out following the TD.

"We played a hell of a game out there. I said at the beginning of the year that we had a lot of defensive players returning and we were going to rely on our run game and defense to win us games. We did exactly that. I was proud of the way we ran the ball and our defense came up HUGE with 3 TD's. I think our defense is the best in the country and they came out today to prove it. North Carolina scored 21 points, but one TD was a defensive TD and another was a garbage TD that they shouldn't have even been going for, so our D really only gave up 7 points and you can't really ask for more than that. I am very proud with the way our boys played today."
                            On the last TD
"Ya know, when a team is down by 27 points with under a minute to go, I'm sorry but you aren't going to come back and win the game. I don't expect them to kneel on the ball, but throwing up passes trying to score is a little bit uncalled for. It's sort of an unwritten rule to just take your beating like a man. They didn't want to do that so I decided I would rub it back in some and put some more points on the board. We wouldn't have had that problem if they wouldn't have been going for it all there, plain and simple."
On the quote from Eric Taylor
"Here's the thing. Coach Taylor is a great guy, because of him, I landed this job over here at the REAL Dillon and that was shown last year. He can talk about how his LB should have won these awards and what not, but our LB's swept the Nagurski, Lombardi, and Best LB award. We will let those trophies speak for themselves. I wish his LB the best in the NFL too, but the simple fact is that our LB's are better over here. We are a team and our goals are to beat East Dillon, or little Dillon as I like to call them, win the Big 12 championship, and win the national championship. We aren't all about individual awards over here. Now, individual awards will probably come with the territory if we do happen to meet all those goals, but we are not solely focused on the individual awards."

                              East Dillon: Coach's Show

Coach, now that the game is a few days past, sum up the feelings you had right at the end of the game.
The feelings I had then are the feelings I have now. I'm disgusted. We went from an incredible high to an incredible low in the span of twenty minutes, halftime. It's not the way any team wants to open the season, and I hope our guys learn from this game and take it out on Rice this Saturday.

One follow-up coach. What exactly was said at halftime and do you think it had an effect on your team's performance in the second half?
I praised the defense for coming out and playing hard from the get go. We were able to jump out to an early lead because of a quick safety and an interception on their quarterback's first pass. We went in the locker room at halftime holding an Air Raid team to a little over one hundred yards and two field goals. If my praise had any impact on their lack of performance, maybe I should be ticked during halftime of the Rice game.

Coach Taylor, last week we saw both Seals and Larson line up behind center and lead the team. Neither seemed to be very effective, especially late in the game. Who gets the start this week?
Sam Seals will get the starting nod again this week, and that's mainly because he's been in the system longer, has a nice rapport with the receivers, and has played pretty well in spot duty for us in the past. That being said, he knows he has a short leash. He needs to take charge of this team now to prove he's capable of being the starter when he's a senior. Like last week, Larson will platoon at the position for some snaps.

How does this loss affect your outlook for the season?
It doesn't. It's one away game without our starting quarterback.

Any plans to get Cafferty more rushes this week?
Definitely. He's the heart and soul of our offense right now, but he can't be our leading rusher and receiver. We need balance, and that balance starts with getting him more touches on the ground.

Coach, any worry that last week's lack of quality quarterback play will enable Rice to put more in the box to stop Cafferty running the ball?
Yes. I'll be worried about the intelligence of Rice's staff if we don't see a lot of eight or nine in the box.

Last question, Coach. Do you have any response to Coach Aikman's post-game comments about your linebackers?
Don't you think I have more important things to worry about right now?
