You're correct when you remove my context, getting outsold 2.6m to 4m is relatively poor. This is especially true with Madden being 50% more expensive. 2k8 demonstrated that the cult following which is the premise for the game "making money" is not enough.

2k5 was their 6th NFL title in 5 years, so was kinda seasoned itself.

In order to have a successful product, you don't always have to "outsell" the other one. The name of the game is to make a profit, which 2k5 clearly did despite it's cheaper price tag. Madden has been around since 1988 and is a cultural icon. Selling 2.6m games in the marketplace with a product like madden is an outstanding achievement. The game was very very good and is still talked about everywhere online. There is a reason for that. Not that any of this matters, it's all in the past anyway. It would just be nice to have more options for an NFL title again.
