    Bucs fire coach Greg Schiano
    Updated: December 31, 2012, 11:55 PM ET
    ESPN.com news services

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving on from coach Greg Schiano, although not necessarily their determination to win with one of the NFL's youngest teams. Schiano was fired Tuesday after one season that raised questions about his suitability as an NFL head coach. Despite ownership's demonstration of their commitment to winning by splurging on several big names stars such as receiver Vincent Jackson and guard Carl Nicks, a reversal of the team's normal tight budget policy, the Bucs finished an NFL worst 2-14 (the Buccaneers worst record since 1986) and lost eleven straight to finish out the season. Meanwhile, NFC South rivals, the Atlanta Falcons finished with an NFC best 13-3 record and the New Olreans Saints earned a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

The Bucs have been on a downward spiral since firing Super Bowl winning coach John Gruden, now of ESPN's Monday Night Football, after six seasons of disappointing in the playoffs. Gruden's successor Raheem Morris started off slow with a 3-13 record but rebounded with a 10-6 season in his second year, however, placing only 3rd in the NFC South. After falling to 4-12 in his third year, the team's owners - the Glazer family - decided to move on. Greg Schiano was widely viewed as an odd choice from the outset. Despite his noted success at Rutgers and his reputation as a meticulous and detail oriented coach, Schiano appeared to be quickly to be overwhelmed in the NFL and many of the questions about his readiness for the NFL resurfaced.

Sources close to the Glazer Family indicate that the Bucs are after a high profile defensive coordinator.

RealSkipBayless: All I've been hearing about is how Guy Savage 'wowed' the Buccaneers' officials. He needs to 'wow' fans.

    Savage new Tampa Bay Coach
    Updated: January 1, 2013, 5:01 AM ET
    ESPN.com news services

Savage began to earn recognition after leading the Patriots’ defense and rookie defensive end Chandler Jones to great success. This season, Savage turned the Patriot's defense, mediocre at best in recent years, to one of the best defenses in the league.

Rumors around the league stated that the New York Giants were eyeing Savage as a replacement for Tom Couglin after his retirement following a disastrous 6-10 season, placing the Giants last in the NFC East. The Cincinnati Bengals had also not hidden their interest in Savage after immediately dismissing Marvin Lewis and his staff the day following the season. Whispers around the league speculated that the New York Jets were willing to move on from boisterous coach Rex Ryan if Savage expressed interest in the job.

Savage is the fourth member of Master’s coaching staff to become a head coach in the NFL, following Romeo Crennel with Cleveland in 2005, Eric Mangini who joined the Jets a year later in 2006, and Josh McDaniels who joined the Broncos in 2009. All three have since been fired, though Crennel has found a new home with the Chiefs.

The Buccaneers won the Super Bowl in 2002 but have slipped into mediocrity, having not won a playoff game since.

NFL Draft Rumors: Trade Could Happen With the Top Pick
          Published January 20, 2013

Things are starting to heat up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. According to Bucs head coach Guy Savage, other team's are starting to call about the possibility of trading up to acquire the top selection.

Originally assumed to be locked into taking Florida State denfensive tackle, Jakari Christmas, other players such as Baylor tackle Conner Barr and Louisville cornerback Jalen Cooper have been targeted as potential players of interest to the Buccaneers. Now it appears as though those same players may be used as bargaining chips in a potential trade.

Another player thought to be of interest for QB needy teams is Maryland’s Jonathan Moore. However, some scouts have expressed concerns as to whether Moore is as good of a prospect as Robert Griffin III was last year. The Washington Redskins gave the St. Louis Rams their first and second round picks in 2012, along with their 2013 and 2014 first round picks in exchange for the second overall pick which was used to select Griffin.

Coming off a dismal 2-14 season in 2012-13, the Bucs are looking to do whatever they can to improve their team, especially if that means moving their top selection in order to add additional assets.

                  New Coaches:
Justin Revell, Bears, Offense: West Coast, Defense: Attacking 4-3
Corey Jason, Bengals, Offense: Vertical, Defense: Hybrid Multiple Front
Guy Savage, Buccaneers, Offense: West Coast, Defense: Hybrid Multiple Front

Rock Munde, Saints, Offense: Balanced, Defense Base 3-4

                  Significant retirements:
Ronde Barber, CB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barber was beginning to feel his age and didn't think he could deal with another new coaching regime in Tampa Bay.
London Fletcher, MLB, Washington Redskins. With the emergence of Perry Riley and Dan Snyder's public push to sign James Laurinaitis, Fletcher decided to leave on his terms.
Tony Gonzalez, TE, Atlanta Falcons. Gonzalez decided to end his career on a high, retiring after winning the Super Bowl.
James Harrison, MLB, Pittsburgh Steelers. Harrison felt like it was time to call it an end. His persistent elbow issue was making it hard to give it his all every play.
Ray Lewis, MLB, Baltimore Ravens. An unfortunate injury has ended his illustrious career.
Terrell Owens, WR, Free Agent. TO finally got the message and retired.

MJD had 1,617 yards on 283 attempts with 15 TDs; averaging 134.8 rushing yards per game with one fumble. He added to that 1,190 yards on 65 receptions and 19 TDs; averaging 99.2 yards per game. Gabbert only threw for 38 TDs which means that MJD was recipient of literally half of his TD passes. It also puts MJD 3rd on the all time season record for receiving TDs behind Jerry Rice and Randy Moss.

                      Buccaneer Free Agency Review
Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie, CB (4 years, $16.8M) - Rodgers-Cromartie is not the best fit for the Bucs new defensive system. He's a poor tackler and a liability in zone looks. However, he does bring a true shutdown corner across from Talib and for a decent price. C.

Anthony Fasano, TE (3 years, $6.87M) - The Bucs' overtures toward Martellus Bennett were not by any means quiet. What was, however, was their signing of Fasano on the first day of free agency. Their courting of Bennett indicates that they had hoped Fasano to be their secondary option but he won't be a bad first choice. He's got good hands and can block. B-

Greg Zuerlin, K (7 years, $3.5M) - I bet Connor Barth has been watching his phone since this signing was announced. But it's a kicker, so...B

Laron Stephens-Howling, HB (4 years, $3.48M) - Stephens-Howling didn't prove anything in Arizona for three seasons before spending all of last season as a free agent so it's really hard to get excited about this signing. He's fast and should provide some relief behind Doug Martin. C-

Matthew Mulligan, TE (1 year, $2.2M) - The Bucs consolation prize for not being able to get Bennett. Mulligan can't catch but is one of the better blocking tight ends in the league. With targets of Bennett, Fasano, and Mulligan, it looks like Savage prefers a tight end who can make a block. Still, $2.2M is a bit much for Mulligan. C

Brandon Ghee, CB (1 year, $700K)- Ghee didn't really prove anything with the Bengals but is fast and young and should provide solid depth. B

Zach Hurd, LT (1 year, $680K) - A solid contributor for the Raiders in 2012, the Bucs are getting a steal here. He's a strong, big blocker who excels in creating holes for the run game. B+

Myron Pryor, DT (1 year, $650K) - It's not surprising for a coach to bring some players from his past team for depth since they already know the system. Pryor looked good in his rookie and sophomore season in spots before struggling with injuries. He should provide solid depth but shouldn't be expected to start. B

Jordan Pugh, FS (1 year, $650K) - What are the Bucs doing at FS? Pugh is a good system fit - he's good in coverage like Savage likes for his safeties but he doesn't have the experience to start. C+

Jaiquawn Jarrett, FS (1 year, $600k) - Like Pugh above, Jarrett is a good system fit because of his coverage skills. He's a better tackler than Pugh. But are either ready to start? C+

Ryan Bartholomew, C (1 year, $600K) - Depth here behind Zuttah. He was cut by the Cardinals and we know how atrocious their o-line has been. C

Jay Dwyer, MLB (1 year, $550K) - Exactly what the Bucs will look for at linebacker under Savage - he can tackle and beat his man. He's a liability in coverage but shouldn't be asked to fall back too often. At 21, he'll have plenty of time to develop. A

Vontaze Burfict, MLB (1 year, $500K) - Burfict is a pure blitzer. He brings a different dimension to the linebacking core than Dwyer but also is not as good of a tackler. C

Emmanuel Acho, LOLB (1 year, $500K) - Likely just a camp body behind Lavoy David and Quincy Black. Acho. He's not particularly fast or strong off the edge. F

                        2013 Mock Draft

                        1. Buccaneers Jakari Christmas, DT , Florida State
Jakari Christmas is the most talented player in the draft. A defensive minded coach like Savage must be salivating at the prospect of having the brute force of Christmas. He’s got speed uncommon for a DT and has been mauling centers and guards all year. Everyone stood with mouths gaped watching him lift at the combine. He’d pair nicely with Gerald McCoy for years to come.

                        2. Browns Jonathan Moore, QB, Maryland
The Browns don’t love Colt McCoy and they must move on from the Brandon Weeden debacle. Moore has a rocket of an arm and scouts say the way he dissects defenses reminds them of Peyton Manning. He’ll need to work on his accuracy and he’s definitely a developmental prospect. Unlike the past couple of drafts, there is no pro ready QB in this draft.

                        3. Jets Sam Farris, QB, Virginia Tech
Rex Ryan almost lost his job after a disastrous 2012 campaign. He must have realized by now that neither Sanchez nor Tebow are the answer. With Moore off the board, Farris is the next best option. He doesn’t have Moore’s elite arm strength but is more accurate and throws better on the run.

                        4. Panthers Conner Barr, T, Baylor
Connor Barr is an absolute beast at left tackle. He’s proficient at either pass or run blocking and is ready to protect Cam Newton’s blindside right away. He’s drawn more than one comparison to Jake Long.

                        5. Giants DeVonte Bolton, DE , Oregon
Bolton is the best pure pass rusher in the draft. He’s lightning fast and the rest of the NFC will not sleep easy with Tuck in to stop the run and Bolton in to tear down QBs.

                        6. Cardinals Nate Harris , OLB, Miami
Nate Harris would be an upgrade for almost any team and he’ll be great fit with the Cardinals. He’s a more than capable pass rusher but is also a wall against the run.

                        7. Titans Isaac Unga, G, Utah
As highly rated as Jakari Christmas is, there are some scouts who think Unga should be higher. Unga tore down any rushers that came at him all season long and that included Christmas at the senior bowl.

                        8. Dolphins Nick Wright, WR, Oregon
I personally think Oregon’s Nick Wright is overrated but some team is going to fall in love with him. He’s got amazing speed off the line but is just average in space. He’s got some serious problems with drops. The Dolphins best receiver is Julian Edelman at the moment so I see them taking a shot here.

                        9. Lions Roland Sharpe, OLB, West Virginia
Sharpe is terror off the edge and would add a new component to the Lion’s already decent defense. Sharpe rushing from the edge and Suh coming from the middle is enough to give quarterbacks nightmares.

                        10. Rams Jalen Cooper, CB, Louisville
Cooper might just be the smartest player in this draft. He scored a 41 on the Wonderlic and coaches have been raving about his ability to pick up defenses. He’d make a formidable tandem with Finnegan.

                        11. Chargers Devin Brown, CB, Oregon State
Devin Brown has slipped under the radar about with the focus on Louisville’s Jalen Cooper. Brown reminds me a lot of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, only faster. In a few years, it would not surprise me if he’s viewed as a true shut down corner. He’d be an huge upgrade to an atrocious Chargers secondary.

                        12. Bengals Najee Hunter, HB , Mississippi St.
Lawfirm impressed in his first year with the Bengals but with as hard as he runs, the Bengals will need someone behind him. Hunter reminds a lot of scouts of Adrian Peterson with his rare blend of speed and ability to plow through defenders.

                        13. Ravens Jackson Williams, TE, Kansas State
The Ravens have nothing at tight end following Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta’s departures. Jackson Williams follows the recent infatuation with big tight ends with decent speed that can catch.

                        14. Broncos Tyrone Mallette, WR, Nebraska
Mallette is huge and catches everything lobbed in his direction. He lacks the breakaway speed of a DeSean Jackson but proved at Nebraska that sometimes all you need is to reach over cornerbacks. The Broncos could use a third option in case either Thomas and Decker leaves in free agency.

                        15. Bills Javier Vasquez, T, SMU
Vasquez is the best pure pass blocker in this draft and he’d be the better prospect than Barr if Vasquez weren’t such a liability when running the ball. He’s a great value here if the Bills are willing to work to teach him their running scheme.

16 Rams Colin Chow, WR, Georgia
Colin Chow has the best hands in the draft. He isn’t the fastest receiver and he lacks separation but he makes some spectacular catches. He will pair well with Sam Bradford and a Rams team that desperately needs a playmaker.

                        17. Vikings Kendrick Berry, G, Virginia Tech
Berry will slot in well to a Vikings line that desperately needs to keep their QB upright. Berry and Kalil could be the foundations of this line for the next decade.

                        18. Bears Ransford Dozier, OLB, Florida State
Dozier could operate opposite of Briggs while he develops and take over the strongside spot when Briggs retires or Dozier could just take it over immediately –he’s that good. He’s not the physical specimen that several of the other linebackers in this draft are but he’s got a more fundamentally sound game. He’s comfortable in coverage but can still rush the passer and stop the run.

                        19. Texans Javonta Woods, SS, South Carolina
Javonta Woods is a linebacker/safety hybrid – he covers like a safety but hits like a linebacker. He’s slower than most teams would like and he doesn't bring anything from a pass rushing perspective but he’s very sound in coverage.

                        20. Seahawks Taiwan Brown, WR, UCLA
There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Brown was one of the best receivers in college football last year but there’s a doubt in pretty much everyone’s mind about how that will translate to the pros. He has the hands but does he have the quickness? I think the Seahawks will think so here.

                        21. Raiders Rodman Steele, DE, Kansas State
Steele is four year starter at Kansas State and was captain for three of those years. He’s a smart kid but I’m not convinced he’s a first round prospect. However, I’ve seen it before and I’m sure we’ll see it here – some team will fall in love with him at the combine interview and will reach.

                        22. Colts John Gunter, DE, UCLA
Gunter is a running stopping defensive end. He doesn’t bring much value if you’re looking for a pass rusher and might be better suited for the defensive tackle position. He could play DT for the Colts or hold down the line so that Redding can charge in.

                        23. Cowboys Tucker Marshall, QB, LSU
I can’t believe that two 28 year old QBs will be chosen in the first round in subsequent drafts – especially after how Weeden utterly bombed. Marshall is more talented than Weeden, some scouts are foolishly comparing him to Brady – he’s not that good. What’s more important for Marshall is that his story is hot right now and some team will bite. Jerry Jones loves flashy players.

                        24. Packers Craig Owens, DT, FAU
Any defensive tackle is going to pale in comparison to Jakari Christmas. Craig Owens can hold down a line and will break through occasionally for a sack. At this point, he’s more of a developmental project though. His immense strength will help him, it’s just a shame that he lifted after Christmas at the combine. He could line up at defensive end while he develops and he could move in on 4-3 looks.

                        25. Saints Connor Bostick, DT, Vanderbilt
Bostick and Craig Owens are very similar players. Bostick is also a young, developmental project with great strength. Bostick has more durability concerns after suffering a knee injury in his sophomore year but he recovered nicely this past season.

                        26. Jaguars Darius Dixon, CB, Florida
Dixon is one of the fastest players in this draft and will likely be utilized more on kick returns than in coverage while he acclimates to the pro game. He’s shown flashes of potential in man coverage and will likely play nickel for the Jags.

                        27. Eagles Shawn Sanders, CB, Alabama
Sanders isn’t the fastest corner in this draft but might be the best tackler. He excels in press coverage and would be an asset to a vulnerable looking Eagles secondary.

                        28. Chiefs Chrishon Godfrey, T, North Carolina
The loss of Brandon Albert can’t be diminished. Jamaal Charles won’t have another season like his last, without Albert. That being said, Godfrey is a capable run blocker and could fill in nicely.

                        29. Patriots O'Neal Kassem, CB, Tennessee
McKelvin will help to secure the perennially weak Patriots secondary but he won’t solve all of its problems. I personally think O’Neal Kassem is overrated but this is approximately his range.

                        30. 49ers Marcus Johnson, WR, Ohio State
QB is the real problem in San Francisco but their receivers aren’t doing them any favors. Randy Moss exploded in the playoffs but nobody else stepped up to help him. Marcus Johnson might just be the biggest sleeper of the first round. He’s short at 5’9” but his blend of speed and his ability to get separation should be a lethal combo.

                        31. Steelers Emmanuel Brown, MLB, Penn State
Emmanuel Brown is a big tackler who can rush or cover on occasion. He’ll be a good developmental prospect that could replace Larry Foote in a year or two.

                        32. Falcons Grady Shead, T, USC
Grady Shead and the Falcons are a perfect match. Sean Locklear is a decent tackle but should be upgraded eventually. Shead is a pro-ready, pass blocking tackle. The thought of Matt Ryan having more time in the pocket is terrifying.
