You brought up the McNabb trade in the first place. It would be irresponsible not to detail all the possibilities of that trade and present it as though there wasn't a great deal of back and forth between the organizations in order to get this thing done. Also, it serves to show an example of a trade a team was unwilling to make due to massive contractual obligations.

Remember, teams weren't dropping out of the bidding because he was too expensive. Manning went to Denver because he chose Denver. Tennessee, San Fran, Miami, Seattle, and Arizona were all chasing him, and they all knew what they were getting into. You think all of those teams expected Peyton Manning to play for $5 million a year and would have been SHOCKED to learn that he thought he was worth nearly 20?

Denver was originally offering a 5 year, $90 million dollar contract to Manning. You're focusing too much on hyperbole again. None of those teams were about to offer something as pitiful as $5 million per year. Most likely, they were in the range of $14-16 million per year, not necessarily guaranteed money, and not structured the way Manning wanted. Manning even got Denver to up the ante another $6 million on top of what was originally offered. Again, you're assuming that all these deals were offering as much money (and as much guaranteed money) as Denver's offer. It's not just a salary cap issue, it's not just a contract issue, both are in play here.

That's fair, in regards to SIGNING A FREE AGENT. Also, those are projections from last year. Here are more recent reports on teams' salary cap space -

The only team that would be able to cover Manning's $22 million dollar second year (he's passing that physical) is Jacksonville based on current cap space. Again, you're looking at it like you're signing a free agent. Trading for that contract is vastly different. Of course, over the next season, some teams could dump a few contracts to clear up space, but you can't know who is really in position or willing to do so.
Manning is a top 5 QB of all time, yes, but given the current landscape of the NFL, it just doesn't make sense at this time.
Maybe after that second year, some teams would be willing to make a trade offer for Manning, but right now? Probably not.
Look, I'm not trying to bash you or anything. You make some good points, but the way I see it, Denver wouldn't be willing to entertain trade offers for Manning, and Manning himself already denied the teams who had the space to sign him. Therefore, a trade for Manning at this point, would be entirely unrealistic.
