Do sliders even really do anything?

So my NHL withdrawals are getting worse, and the other night I decided to play NHL 13 again (something I hadn't done in a long time due to FIFA and NHL 2k10).

I created a playoff mode with all teams selected; my goal was to play every single game as the home team. I love realism settings, which is the only reason I play 2k10 anymore, but I decided to try something different.

I put it on 4 minute periods, jacked up game speed to 6, jacked up hitting and aggression, and put goalie reactions at 2 I believe, the point here was to get exciting, hard hitting and high scoring games that I could knock out in 10 or 15 minutes.

What I ACTUALLY got were some real intense and low scoring affairs, and not low scoring like 2-1. Like 1-0 in OT is what most of these games shaped out to be. So I bumped up shot power and accuracy, goalie reaction to 0 and screen effect to 6. STILL 1-0, 2-1 in 2OT. And I'm in the conference semi-finals now.

So here's the thing, while I LIKE realistic settings, the fact that I CAN'T make it unrealistic made me stop playing the game again altogether. If I want to have a 6-5 goalfest with batting average-like save percentages, then why can't I? I know I've really already answered my own question...but can anyone offer some feedback? Or ways to MAKE the sliders affect the game more?

So what about the shot power/accuracy? I would think those would need adjusting as well. I know the sliders work, but I wonder if the don't effect the human player more than the Cpu.

I had shot power and accuracy at 6 each, goalie reaction at 0 and screen eff at 6. And I play position lock, it feels more immersive to me. It lets the CPU dictate play, games seem to have a more even flow, especially playing as one of the wings. So really for the most part my games are based on CPU sliders.

....didn't read the post carefully enough. I think part of your problem was going into Playoff Mode, which automatically makes Cpu players superhuman.

Ahhhh good to hear that from another person. I kinda figured that might be it but when I said it aloud to myself I figured it was probably just my own bias on what was happening.

Problem is you can't set a shorter game season in NHL, and I have this obsessive-compulsive need to play EVERY game for every team to get consistent stats. And as of now NHL 2k10 is the only game that actually lets you set the sim period length.

Might just fire up a Season mode and try to play all 1,230 games hahah. It'll be the only NHL season running unfortunately.

i swear having the goalie reaction slider higher will get you more goals. bc they over commit to dekes and shots IMO..

I was thinking this myself, because I see fewer stupid goals with the Reaction time at 2 than I did at 3 or 4. I wonder it the slider isn't reversed and the higher it is ths slower the goalies are to react or maybe it's like you say and they are too fast and they overplay in too circumstances. Much like the goalies in 2K10, where once the quickness/poke check were lowered and the Skill slider was set between 50 and 60 they behaved much better.

what i found if goalie reaction : 4/4 and shot aim: manual
manual passing : on or off depending on the configuration
when after done editing the settings on Hardcore or Normal
Change it to: Game Style : Favorite i could hardly beat the goalie
they seemed smarter more like old brick wall goalies of old
i'd win some and lose some

Well, I did some testing on this theory tonight in my franchise. Playing 82 full games takes too long, so I like to sim the first 2 periods and intervene in the 3rd, and after 4 or 5 third periods with 1 goal or less with goalie reaction time at 1 or 0, i bumped it up to 4 and had a 6 goal third period haha.

So for whatever reason (it seems to be a mix of the goalies over-anticipating and having poorer overall positioning, the goalies' actual REACTION times don't seem to differ from setting to setting), I'll be referring to this slider as "Goal-allowing susceptibility" from now on.

i do know in modes like be a pro and be a nhl pro
if playing goalie use goalie reaction speed: 6/6
it helps alot if its lower human cpu can't beat the cpu goalie from reason

I'll monitor the goalie reaction slider, because I've been moving it up and down a bit recently.

First it was 4, then 3, then 2, and now I have it back at 4.

Does anyone think that this slider has anything to do with how willing goalie's are too cover the puck?

i would think it does everytime i've played player i keep using goalie reaction speed: 4/4 ,manual passing : on ,game style : favorite (saved from hardcore or normal), shot aim : manual . to me on my end when shooting on the cpu goalie seems harder to beat :o i outshot the cpu by 5 - 39 cpu stopt them all
and if you add cpu aid: normal or default then likey your gonna loose at away games . in terms of covering the puck i have it set to : goalie passing: 3 & goalie cover puck: 3 if u go to 5 on both cpu is like a beast same with
goalie passing 6 and cover puck : 5 cpu goalie goes in too beast mode
