Whisenhunt fired, search for replacement begins.

By the time the sun had risen on another valley morning, the news had already broke. Ken Whisenhunt was no longer the Head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

After a meeting between GM Rod Graves, The Bidwill family and other top brass in the Cards' organisation late Wednesday night, the decision was reached that they were to go in a different direction, and Whisenhunt's services were no longer required.

After an 8 year playing career, Whisenhunt got his first coaching job at Vanderbilt as a special teams, halfbacks and tight ends coach. Stops at Baltimore,Cleveland, New York (Jets) and Pittsburgh followed, before Arizona gave him his first head coaching job, hiring him to replace Dennis Green. Whiz's high point came in the 2008 season, where he guided the team all the way to superbowl XLIII, where they would eventually lose 27-23 to the Pittsburgh steelers, where Whisenhunt had formerly served as an offensive co-ordinator.

But, naturally, there were low points too.
Whisenhunt never managed to find a replacement at QB for Kurt Warner, something that may unfortunately taint his legacy with the Cards, thanks to unsuccessful experiments with Matt Leinart, Max Hall, Derek Anderson, and more recently the duo of John Skelton and the costly Kevin Kolb. The QB issue coupled with a failure to improve the Offensive-line may have factored into a decision that, although was made quickly, seems to be supported by the media and fans alike.

GM Rod Graves said "We wish Ken all the best. He had a pretty good time here, but after talking through the night, and after looking at where we felt the organisation was headed, and how we wanted to move forward we decided to make the move. It's certainly not a decision we take lightly, but these things have to be done sometimes."

"The search for a replacement will begin immediately, but we don't want to rush it. We've got a week or so until camp starts and we'd like to have a guy in by then, obviously. But he has to be the right guy. For us, it's not about a big name, NFL experience, or past successes and failures. We're more interested in finding a guy who fits our philosophy, someone we can see eye to eye with."

Though he couldn't be drawn on actual names, one has to figure one of the candidates would be Ray Horton, who is currently the Defensive co-ordinator for the Cards, and has been linked with Head coaching jobs before.

Whisenhunt leaves the Cardinals with a 45-50 record, winning games at a .474% clip.

      Arizona Cardinals Official Press Release:

The Arizona Cardinals are happy to announce the hiring of Rhys Withenshaw as the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

He joins us as the first Englishman to ever coach in the NFL, after 4 years of coaching football both in America and abroad, and we look forward to working with him.

He will start right away and will be working closely with the players through the pre-season.

GM Rod Graves: "We had a couple of candidates that we wanted to talk to, and he was one of them. He said all the right things, and he knows what he wants to do. We don't feel a lack of NFL experience should put anyone at a disadvantage. He's a smart guy, he knows the game, and it shouldn't be a problem."

On the subject of Ray Horton, Graves said "We know Ray, he's been with us for a while now, and we like what he brings. He is one of the top defensive co-ordinators in the league, and we're lucky to have him. We talked to him about the job, but we both felt the time wasn't right, as he still feels he has work to do with our defensive unit."

Preseason Week 1 Recap, The QB Race, Cut Day & Other Stuff

        Preseason Week 1:

John Skelton stole the show and may have placed himself ahead of Kevin Kolb in the race for the starting job. The Cards ran out 47-44 winners against the Kansas City Chiefs in one of the most entertaining preseason games in recent memory. Both teams looked sharp on offence, and horrific on defence.

        The QB Race:

When Kevin Kolb departed after the first quarter, he must have thought he'd done enough to keep him at the top of the depth chart for at least a week.
Or maybe not. Because John Skelton came in and played the rest of the way, and he lit up the Kansas secondary, albeit backups. Kevin Kolb took one series, and continued to move the chains thanks to some impressive running by Beanie Wells. When they got to the Kansas 30, Kolb started to air it out, completing 3 consecutive passes to Larry Fitzgerald, the 3rd one for six points. When Kevin (And Larry) departed, John Skelton entered. The rest, was phenomenal.

        Cut Day:

LaRod Stephens-Howling was the only standout from the first four players cut by the Cards. The one they call "Hyphen", a seventh round pick in 2009, has struggled to break through and found himself at the wrong end of the depth chart. Full List:

        LaRod Stephens-Howling - HB
        Steve Skelton - TE
        Alfonso Smith - HB
        Marshay Green - CB

        Other Stuff:
        • Steve Skelton was cut from the roster yesterday. John's younger brother spent most of last year on the practice squad.

        • The Seattle Seahawks cut Terrell Owens this week.

Preseason Week 2 Recap, Kolb's drive, Beanie's Injury, Cut Day & Other Stuff:

          Preseason Week 2 Recap:

The Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start in pre-season. If only it was the real thing. The Cards continue to amaze on offence and suffer on defence, coming out triumphant, winning 41-38 over the Raiders. John Skelton started and did ok, but was poor compared to the show he put on last week. Rich Bartel saw some game time, but Kevin Kolb came in for the last quarter and vowed to make the QB race interesting, with a flowing game winning drive, capped off with a one yard touchdown run by Thomas Clayton.

          Kolb's Drive:

People around the country are still asking just who this Kevin Kolb imposter is. After an impressive game winning drive against the Raiders, Kolb said "It felt good to be in that situation. It really gets the adrenaline going."

People will be hoping this seemingly new Kevin Kolb can stick around, and stay healthy.

          Beanie's Injury:

Beanie Wells managed to break a thumb against the Raiders. He will be out for at least a week, probably more.

          Cut Day:

No real suprises. By cutting Mike Leach it looks like the Cards are banking on Todd Heap staying healthy, something he has always struggled to do. We'll see.

          DeMarco Sampson - WR
          Reggie Walker - MLB
          Michael Adams - CB
          Blake Gideon - SS
          Mike Leach - TE

          Other Stuff:
          • In what continues to be a rollercoaster of a preseason, New Orleans blew out the Jags 50-0 at the superdome.

Preseason Week 3 Recap, Cut Day & Other Stuff:

            Preseason Week 3 Recap:

Rhys Withenshaw must think this coaching stuff is easy. The Cards are now 3-0 after a 34- 13 win over the Titans. The Cards haven't had the hardest of pre-season schedules by any stretch of the imagination, and pre-season rarely has any relevance to the real season, but still, 3-0 is a good start.

            Cut Day:

Another cut day, more casualties. D'Anthony Batiste saw some game time last year as part of the O-Line that couldn't have stopped a pig running down an alley. All Cardinal QB's have probably just let out a sigh of relief now that he's gone. Full List:

            James Sanders - FS
            Brandon Williams - ROLB
            Ricky Lumpkin - DT
            D'Anthony Batiste - RT
            D.J. Young - LT
            Isaiah Williams - WR

            Other Stuff:
            • New Orleans Saints traded running back Pierre Thomas to the Buccaneers. No word on yet on what it cost the Bucs.

Preseason Week 4 Recap, Cut Day & Other Stuff:

              Preseson Week 4 Recap:

The Arizona Cardinals have gone undefeated in pre-season, beating the Denver Broncos 18-10 in a close fought game at the University Of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals looked the poorest they have all pre-season. Wouldn't it just be typical Cardinal fashion to see them trending the wrong way at the wrong time? Let's hope not. A win is a win, right?

              Cut Day:

Surely no one saw this coming. Vonnie Holiday, Clark Haggans and Paris Lenon all cut, in which was described by Rhys Withenshaw as a "concerted effort to get younger." He said "What we are doing here is a process. I felt comfortable with the depth we have, so I was OK in letting three older guys go. They're still talented guys, no doubt, but I felt with what we were trying to do, it was better for us to go in a younger direction. We've got some really promising players on the roster, but they won't progress without game time. I wouldn't be cutting the veteran guys if I didn't think the younger guys were up to the task"

              Rich Bartel - QB
              Thomas Clayton - HB
              Vonnie Holiday - LE

              Paris Lenon - MLB

Week 1 Preview, Kolb To Start, Beanie Out & Other Stuff

                  Week 1 Preview:

Are you ready for football? After all the waiting, the NFL season kicks off this weekend, and your Arizona Cardinals host the Seattle Seahawks at the University Of Phoenix Stadium(4:25 Kick-off). The Arizona Cardinals are looking to prove their undefeated preseason was not a fluke, whilst the Seahawks went a mediocre 1-3 in their warm-up games. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said "We're lucky preseason doesn't count much, because we haven't been good enough. But everybody's on an even foot now, at 0-0. If we play as well as I know we can, we'll win."

                  Kolb To Start:

Kevin Kolb will be the Arizona Cardinals starting QB for the week 1 matchup. After a tough first year in the desert , Kolb will be looking to bounce back this year, and he's made a good start by impressing enough to be handed the start, despite a decent preseason showing by backup John Skelton.

Kolb will go up against former Green Bay Packer Matt Flynn, who held off a challenge from rookie QB Russell Wilson to stay at the top of the depth chart.

                  Beanie Out:

Beanie Wells has been ruled out of the game against the Seahawks on sunday. Beanie is still struggling with a broken thumb he picked up against the Oakland Raiders in the second week of preseason. Rhys Withenshaw rated Beanie as "60-40" to be able to play next week. Beanie's injury means that Ryan Williams could see some touches of the ball in his first NFL appearance after he ruptured a patella tendon in his right knee in lsat year's preseason, causing him to miss the entirety of his rookie year.

The Seahawks only injury at the minute is DE Tim Jamison, who is expected to be out for at least a month with a ruptured disk.
                  Other Stuff:

Here are the other games being played in the NFL this week:

Meet Rhys Withenshaw: An interview with the NFL's newest coach.

Above: The Cardinals celebrate Thomas Clayton's touchdown run

It's week 2 of the pre-season, and the Arizona Cardinals found themselves 36-43 down, with just seconds left. Kevin Kolb's hand off to RB Thomas Clayton sees the Cards surely win it.

Arizona fans and players alike are celebrating, hugging each other and toasting a job well done. Apart from one man.

"The snap was off" mentions Rhys Withenshaw to his Offensive Co-Ordinator Mike Miller, as he stands completely still. "Delayed the hand off, should've been punished" Mike Miller nods. He's only worked with him for a few weeks, but he's already very aware of the high standards the Cards' new HC demands from players and staff alike. You might even say he's a perfectionist, one of the many things we asked him about when he agreed to sit down with "The Republic" beat writer Joe Bloggs for an exclusive interview before Sunday's game against Seattle.

Q: Hi, good to meet you, how are you?
                      RW: Good thanks, you?

Q: Haha, good. So it's your first NFL game on Sunday, are you nervous?
RW: I'm not allowed to be.

[Q: (after a few seconds) Oh, you're serious?
RW: Of course. I'm the head coach. I'm supposed to be a leader, I'm not allowed to be nervous, it'd set a bad example.

Q: Your pretty unknown at the minute. So tell us about your background, how you got into coaching?
RW: I got into coaching because I couldn't play. I knew everything, what to do on the field. But I'm not an athlete, so I couldn't do what I thought I should do. So I got into coaching at a younger age than everyone else. I moved here [Arizona] when I got a job at a local high school after coaching in Europe for years, and after moving up there I'm now here.

Q: Every one seemed surprised when you were offered the job, were you?
RW: Honestly, yes. I didn't expect to get the job. I was going up against some very good coaches with NFL experience. But I went in with the attitude that the worst they could do was say no. But after the interview, I felt pretty good, like I hadn't ruled myself out.

Q: Tell us more about the interview...
RW: I'm not one for job interviews, to be honest. I feel they don't always give a fair reflection on the interviewee. But this was more laid back. It was less of an interview and more of just a talk about football, like you'd have with friends. I think that suited me , away from the field I'm usually pretty laid back, it's only at game time and during practice, that I usually get amped up.

Q: On the subject of coaching, our beat writer caught Early Doucet coming out of practice a couple of days ago, and he reportedly said in reference to you "he likes it perfect. Real perfect". What was that about?
RW: There's a feeling amongst the players that I'm a perfectionist, I couldn't tell you either way, but I did say to Early [Doucet] the other day his locker was too messy, and he laughed before he realised I was serious, like you did earlier. I was talking to him for half an hour about why he should keep his locker tidy. I'm pretty sure he spent the last ten minutes grumbling through it.

Q: Sounds like the style of a perfectionist...
RW: Maybe. Early's locker was really messy though. I've tried to make sure the players are relaxed, but I also told him "a cluttered locker can equal a cluttered mind". He responded by saying "it's more of a symbol that in overflowing with knowledge". I liked that, I like that the players feel they can have a laugh with me, as long as they remember I'm in charge. It's a difficult style to pull off, but if you can then you'll go far.

Q: Well that's about it so good luck on Sunday and we hope to speak to you again soon.
                      RW: Thank you.

                        THE REPUBLIC

                        PICK SIX!
Kolb's six INTS dooms Cardinals in season opener

Kevin Kolb threw six interceptions in a horrible day for the Arizona Cardinals offense, as they fell 19-3 to the Seattle Seahawks in the season opener at The University Of Phoenix Stadium

The preseason really does count for nothing. Ask the Arizona Cardinals. After a 4-0 preseason, they find themselves 0-1 after a horrific performance in front of an expectant, sell out home crowd.

It didn't take long for Kevin Kolb to get the interception train rolling. After electing to receive the ball from the kick off, Patrick Peterson's return found the Cards at their own 23. Two hand-offs to running back Javarris James, who was deputising for the inactive Beanie Wells followed, and the Cards found themselves at 3rd and 6. Kolb came out in the shotgun, and looked to connect with tight end Todd Heap over the middle, but Kolb threw wide of Heap and instead found Seattle safety Earl Thomas, one of three interceptions on the day for Thomas, who was able to return the ball all the way to the 5 yard line, putting Matt Flynn in excellent position for his first drive with the Seahawks. Call it a drive loosely though, as it took just one play for Flynn to connect with Kellen Winslow at the back of the end zone, putting the Seahawks up 7-0 after the extra point by Steven Hauschka.

Hauschka added a field goal later in the first quarter, and two more in the second quarter to put Seattle up 16-0 at the half. The Arizona defence continued to bail out it's spluttering offence by continuously pressuring Matt Flynn, forcing him to throw two first half interceptions to Adrian Wilson and one to Sam Acho, who made a brilliant heads-up play to dive full stretch for the ball after Flynn's pass had been tipped by DT David Carter. The Cards offence however failed to capitalise on it's stingy defence, as the offensive line struggled to create holes for the running game and Kevin Kolb seemed to be completely out of sync with his receivers, failing to complete a pass in the first quarter, and he didn't look much better in the second quarter.

The Cardinals best chance for a comeback came at the end of the third quarter. On the final play of the third, Kevin Kolb connected with Andre Roberts on a 34 yard pass down the sideline, taking Arizona into the redzone for the first time. When they took the field for the fourth quarter, the home crowd roared the loudest they had all day. But after two small gains on the ground, Kolb threw his fifth pick of the day, illicting boos from the home crowd. Kolb was even afforded a second chance in the redzone when Greg Toler picked off Matt Flynn on the very next play. But again the Cards failed to punch it in, having to settle for a Jay Feely field goal to make it 16-3.

The Arizona defence continued to put up a strong front to the very last, limiting Seattle to one more field goal, and forcing Robert Turbin into a fumble just four yards from the end zone, which was recovered by Patrick Peterson, who had on otherwise poor day, both in coverage and the return game.

However, the spotlight was on Kolb and his diabolical 0.4 QB rating.

                        Notes:

Cardinals WR Michael Floyd left the game with an injury after just the second series. Early reports say he will be out for four weeks with a dislocated elbow.
