The Rise Of The Purple People Eaters: A Minnesota Vikings Franchise

    INTRODUCTION

Welcome all, this is going to be a NFL dynasty I will be running along side my RTG NCAA player. This virtual NFL will have changes from the real world NFL of course to put a spin on it and make it my own as much as I can, though nothing big will be happening to the teams it will mostly at the start be front office changes and the likes. I will be of course based off the title be using the Minnesota Vikings, the team closest to where I live, and a team that I enjoy watching. Sadly though since the days of Randy Moss the team has been stuck in neutral and sometimes have even put themselves into reverse. In my franchise I hope to end that and build a winner, which will be centered around All Day Adrian Peterson. Outside of him I have a lot of tough choices I am going to have to make for my team. Ponder is a good prospect but may never get past being just a good prospect and will be something I have to contend with for years to come. Alas without further ramblings I will start this franchise going and hope everyone will enjoy the NFL side of football!

                  TWIN CITY SHAKEUP
SPIELMAN AND FRAZIER SWEPT OUT OF TOWN

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP) - It had seemed throughout much of the offseason that both Leslie Frazier and Rick Spielman would be spared their jobs despite since Frazier took over the teams head coaching vacancy the record for the Vikings was a measly 6-16. Spielman was a bit more of a shocker as he was just named the General Manager of the team though under his watch the Vikings have not faired much better. News first broke of this early on Sunday evening as rumors were swirling about a coaching change, and it appears as though the General Manager was part of package if the coach was to come on board. The latest word we had received was that the coach in question was Kyle Kole would be taking control of the team. It is a name not familiar outside of the north west where Kole had managed to take the Washington Huskies from a average program into a National Championship contender. In 5 season in Washington, Kole managed to guide the Huskies to two straight championships, as well as 5 straight winning seasons of at least 9 wins. No easy feat in one of the toughest conferences in college, though his player development skills were a key reason he was as successful as he was and one of the contributing factors to him being considered for the Minnesota Vikings job.

Terms of a possible contract would seem to dictate that Kole will also be named the teams acting General Manager and will oversee both of the roles though he will be brining on board some of his old staff to help with scouting and coaching. The other key feature in the rumored contract is that its length is to be 5 years long, a rather long contract for a untested NFL coach, and General Manager, though it seems that Mr. Wilf has faith in the abilities Kyle can bring to the table for his football team. Some of the players seem to already be on board with the hire as Christian Ponder was singing the praises of what he saw Kyle Kole do in college.

"I got a chance to see him first hand in some games, and all I can tell the rest of my teammates is that we are in a really good position right now. He was one of the smartest coaches I had played against and truly seemed to have his players support 110% while he was there. I cannot wait to get him into the building so we can start game planing and figuring some of this stuff out on offense. With his help I don't think we will be down and out for to long, he will be the key factor in us turning this around and making something special here." - Christian Ponder, Quarterback

If it is true and Kyle Kole does come to the Vikings, which seems all but certain as more information flows in, and with the firing of the two people that stood in his way of achieving that goal. Fans will take some getting used to Kole as he will tell people exactly how it is and very rarely will sugar coat anything he says. If a player is performing bad they will know about it, inside or outside of the locker room. Its a brash attitude that has ultimately won over many of his former players that though they don't like being called out in public knew that it was his way of lighting a fire under them and he still had faith in them. Kole will not be coming to a team with a completely empty cupboard of players as he will have some building blocks in the way of Ponder (though his job may be in jeopardy), Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Jared Allen on defense. Its not a lot to work with but if anyone can make it work the Vikings will have to hope that it is Kyle Kole.

VIKINGS LIMP OUT OF THE PRESEASON WITH A SINGLE WIN
1-3 VIKINGS SNEAK OUT WIN IN PRESEASON FINALE AGAINST HOUSTON

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP) - Kyle Kole stepped into a minefield it would seem when he took the Minnesota Vikings job, as it was a rough and tumble preseason where his team only managed to get 1 win and it was in the final game. Lets start with the bright spots, the first and brightest being the running game, Peterson and Gerhart both looked very good in the preseason, combined averaging almost 5 yards per carry which moving forward will serve the Vikings very well. It will allow the offense to chew up huge chunks of the clock and keep the defense off the field. Second year players Christian Ponder and Kyle Rudolph both looked very good, Ponder with a spectacular 101.1 Quarterback Rating and Rudolph leading the team in receiving with 214 yards. Defensively the Vikings were able to create a good amount of turnovers which if it carries into the regular season should help the team greatly as long as they can continue to do what they did, though the pass rush certainly helped generate more then just a few of those turnovers for the Vikings, averaging 3 sacks a game.

Now, for the bad side of things, or areas for improvement if you would rather it be called that. The offensive line, and this is a general statement because on the field it was almost impossible to pick out anyone that stood out. No one had a good preseason and Vikings quarterbacks paid the price for it. 10 sacks were allowed, and that is just unacceptable especially by Kyle Kole who publicly called out his entire line telling them they all needed to play a "hell of a lot better". Joe Webb did not look like a serviceable backup to Ponder, he threw for a lot of yards, but he was also on the field a lot more, completing less then 50% of his passes and throwing only one more touchdown then he did interceptions. This could be something Kole looks to improve upon during the season just in case Christian happens to go down with some kind of injury. Outside of that the team looks strong, the defense needs to tighten up when the opposition gets inside the redzone and limit them to only field goals and not touchdowns like they were getting, but other than that things a starting to take shape for Kyle Kole and the Minnesota Vikings and with the regular season quickly approaching it won't take long to find out just how the Vikings will perform when the pressure is actually on.

                      Game Notes
Its the Minnesota Vikings home opener and it will be a tough one to win for them even with the home field advantage. Christian Ponder will be leading the charge and after a rough rookie season will be looking to have a strong second year out of the gate, and he is surrounded by talent on the offensive side of the ball. Adrian Peterson will be his number one go to guy for most of the season, as they say feed Peterson the ball "All Day" long. Percy Harvin is going to be the number one target in the slot, with only Jerome Simpson really being the only outside receiver threat that is somewhat established.

Jared Allen is going to be the focal point of the defense once again and it will be up to opposing offenses to stop him from getting to their quarterback. Chad Greenway has been another long time mainstay on defense and will have to once again lead the linebackers, making big plays both against the run and pass, not always an easy task for a linebacker. In the secondary Winfield is getting up in age with maybe at most a few years left in the tank, he is joined by rookie Harrison Smith who may be the leader in the secondary when Winfield retires. It will be a uphill battle for the defense but with a mix of youth and veteran leadership they will have the moments of brilliance and moments that make you as a fan just put your face in your palms and look away.

                        MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP) -
When you make a head coaching debut, only two things really can happen, either you win or you lose. Today Kyle Kole was on the winning side of things as his Minnesota Vikings managed to pull off an ugly win to start the season 20-15 over a seemingly incapable Jacksonville squad. By no means were either offenses anything to cheer for, in fact you could make the argument that these teams collectively set offenses back 15 years by what was witnessed on the football field. The sluggish game got underway with Jacksonville managing to drive down the field after a stalled out Minnesota drive, only to have their own drive stall just outside of the redzone. Scobee thankfully came to their rescue and managed to kick a 36 yard field goal to put the Jaguars up 3-0 early on in the game, he would tack on a second field goal later in the first quarter to extend the lead to 6 points and give the Jaguars some momentum heading into the second quarter.

Finally after almost 20 minutes the Vikings were able to get a drive together and march down field with the help of Kyle Rudolph and Adrian Peterson. On a first and goal from the 4 yard line Christian Ponder took it upon himself to run in for the games first touchdown and give the Vikings the slight 1 point lead, 7-6. It is hard to say if the defenses played just that good or that both offenses really just have no clue what they were doing, but one player certainly shined in his debut and that was Harrison Smith who absolutely looked like he belonged on the NFL field and made it known he was worth the draft pick. In the dying moments of the first half the Vikings were able to put together another good scoring drive with Christian Ponder leading the charge down the field to find Kyle Rudolph on a nice quick touchdown pass, extending the Vikings lead to 8, 14-6. As it would seem almost more then enough to cap the game at that point the way both offenses were playing.

"We need to come out with a much better effort from here on in. What we showed in not only the first half of the game but the second half of the game is unacceptable, and we know he have to produce. We cannot rely on the defense nearly as much as we did this game, the only good thing is we did not turn the ball over and give Jacksonville a short field to work with in the game. For us to win some of the bigger games coming up, especially the ones in our division we will need to come out swinging and really trying to make a quick impact on games and score touchdowns quick." - Kyle Kole, Head Coach

When push came to shove the offenses of both teams fell back into a slumber after halftime, seemingly after having to much to eat as both of them came out sluggish and looked bad. A Henderson interception off a tipped ball and multiple deflections gave Minnesota great field position right at the start of the game but they were not able to move the ball at all and had to settle for a Blair Walsh field goal try that he would hit. Josh Scobee would add his 3rd field goal later in the quarter to but the lead back down to 8 points, 17-9 in a game that had fans leaning back and just asking why. Minnesota to their credit though got the fans behind them a lot on defense with huge plays, and a combined 6 sacks, 3 of which were by Robison who had a breakout game.

As you guessed it the fourth quarter was much the same once again with neither team really doing much of anything to separate one from the other. Minnesota was able to tack on an early field foal to make it 20-9, but that was then followed by two straight Scobee field goals to bring the Jaguars within a touchdown of taking the lead 20-15. It came down to one final drive that would define the game either on defense or offense. Jacksonville had started to get into a grove on the offensive side of the ball after the two minute warning and moved the ball down the field effectively getting inside the Minnesota 30 with about 30 seconds to spare, a Robison sack took another 10 seconds off the clock and on the final play of the game on 4th and 10, Robison once again came out and put Henne on the ground to end the game and seal the win for the Vikings, a home opening, coaching debut 20-15 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Its just one of those things, when it came to having to make big plays I was able to do it. I am sure if it wasn't me then someone else on the defense would of done it, the guys you should be talking to are McKenzie and Smith, those two guys were on the ball all game long and made huge plays for us all over the field. Smith that kid is going to be a bright spot for years to come here in Minnesota he played like a 10 year vet out there and really showed us that he can play. Its one win but it feels good to get it out of the way early this year, hopefully more are to come but we know that we need to play better to win games especially in the NFC North." - Brian Robison, Defensive End
