MOSCOW, IDAHO -- The Idaho Vandals held off the North Texas Mean Green Saturday at home in Moscow to open their season on the right foot and get new head coach Mitch Collins his first career NCAA Division I win.

"Feels great!" said Collins. "We played really well today. Run game going smoothly, people getting open. Defense could have been better but I can't complain after holding on to a close win. I was really impressed with Taylor [Davis, QB] today. I mean, coming in to a big home crowd after an off-season with a slow training routine for him, and he had a big game. Now we're looking at next week."

Collins gave junior Taylor Davis the ball in the opener, and he did not fail to impress, completing 21 of his 30 pass attempts for a 70% completion percentage. Davis threw for 262 yards total and had 3 touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Davis' shining moment came in the third quarter with Idaho up just one. He connected with freshman Marquan Major just in-bounds in the corner of the end-zone over two defenders to put the Vandals up eight. "It was a great pass," said Major, for whom it was his first career touchdown reception. "I gotta give it to him, he played a great game tonight and helped us win."

However, it was the Vandals' running game that stepped up and help them win. Senior halfback Ryan Bass made the big runs when it counted, turning a 2 point lead in an 11 point lead with a 58-yard TD run at the end of the third quarter. He dashed through defenders as Idaho's offensive line made its shining moment of the day (there weren't many, as Davis was sacked six times). Bass finished the night with 156 yards and 2 touchdown runs on 17 attempts.

While the run put the Vandals two possessions ahead, the game was far from over. A 2:04 drive spanning 80 yards ended in a touchdown for the Mean Green when quarterback Derek Thompson found Derrick Teegarden in the end-zone to bring it back within 2.

Idaho ran the clock on the next possession, and wasted little time running down North Texas' timeouts, as all three were used with more than 2 minutes left. Bass pummeled through the defense when it mattered most, running thirty yards on 6 plays after reaching the 50 yard line and punching a 4-yard run into the end-zone.

North Texas wasn't about to just back out however. Brelan Chancellor found a hole in the defense and turned it into a 63-yard touchdown reception. Unfortunately, it was too late as the onside kick went to the Vandals.

Thompson, who finished 15-30 in pass attempts with 254 yards, 4 TDs and one interceptions, had this to say: "It was a great game. They played really well, and were the better team tonight. My receivers and my o-line were great. I owe a lot of what I do to them. I can't do half of my work without them. They played great. Looking forward to next week."

Idaho takes on Bowling Green (0-1) next week on the road. The Falcons lost 28-10 to Florida this week.
