Best retro football game? (Sega Genesis)

    Hey guys,

I decided to get back into the retro gaming of my past. I just don't seem to enjoy the modern day football games or even the modern sports games for some reason.

I have a Sega Genesis on the way from Ebay and wanted opinions on what the best football games on the Genesis of that generation was. I am especially interested in the tecmo bowl series. I have played the first one and really enjoyed it as I remember but I know there are two or 3 more versions out there, i.e Super Bowl and Tecmo Bowl III.

I've already ordered Mutant League Football, played it back in the day and it was a blast, really looking forward to it again. Also ordered NHL Hockey '94 as I understand it was the best back then. But as far as semi-sim type of games what would you all suggest?

I know most of these games can now be played on the PC but I'm kinda an old style guy that wants to play the games on the systems they were originally released on.

    Thanks.

Probably my favorite football game for the Sega Genesis would have to be NFL Football '94 Starring Joe Montana. So much fun. You not only had five or six different base formations in your play book, you had multiple different sets in each (Silver or Purple, for example) that not only had players lining up in different places, but also had different plays in each. But, that having been said, I've only played that, Troy Aikman Football (which is garbage in my opinion.) and College Football USA '97. So take that for what it's worth.
    MLB: Minnesota Twins
    NFL: Philadelphia Eagles
    NBA: Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves
European Football: Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion
    NCAA: UNI Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes

Thanks mb625, I remember playing Joe Montana but just can't remember any specifics of it. Sports games for the Genesis are really cheap (exception would be Mutant League Hockey) so I am sure I'll pick it up. I'm pretty sure I played all the Madden games back then but I can't remember which one is the best.

Mutant League Football is ruined by the awful passing windows.

        Best games for me are:

        Madden 95
        Bill Walsh 95
        College Football USA 96
        Joe Montana 94

Madden 94 and 95 are so much fun. I also like 97, but seem to be on my own with that. I have every NHL and nba game released for the genesis (ea brand) and am partial to live 96 and NHL 93 or 94...depending on the day. NHL 95 and up take a step back IMO.

My all time favorite game is super tecmo bowl for nes. I own the current rom version on cartridge and play it to death. The genesis versions are good(the third is the best), but no where near the nes one. The sports talk series is ok (I own them all) but I get bored with them...especially after 94 when the gameplay changed and became clunkier and blocker. The bill Walsh series is the best NCAA football, but if you get the hang of the sega sports versions, they are really fun too.

I gave my 360 to my nephew and strictly play my old systems now. I can't stand to play ten minutes of the newer games, but can play hours on the genesis. Nba live 96 is working overtime right now......

Ready! Down! Hut hut hut hut...the cutscenes were awesome in that game. that game also had measurements, something current games don't even have!!!

nice post! i'm glad i'm not alone on this. i play all other systems, even retro games. we've seen games evolve...then in some ways devolve on the 360 and PS3. i don't play the 360 or PS3! i prefer PC gaming and the older generation of consoles.

it's funny you mention NBA Live 96, you're talking about genesis right. you know what i've been playing? NBA Live 95 for PC!! that game is great, but starting with NBA Live 96 on PC, it went to the 3D engine. so i guess basically NBA Live 96-98 on genesis are updates to Live 95 PC without the PC presentation? but a part of me wants to play Live 96 on Genesis just to see the improvements. one thing about live 95 at least. it's really hard to play defense. the control is so loose but it's still loads of fun. do you prefer live 96 to live 95? i think i heard someone say that live 96 is the best one. do you think is live 96 on genesis better then 97 or 98?

The controls get a lot less "icy" as the games went on. Nba live 98 is actually a pretty solid game and has three point contests and all, but 96 is regarded as the best by all who I talk to/chat with. I love 96 because the Knicks team I know was still mostly in tact......

I've got Live 97 for the Genesis. I don't play their version of "sim" but I turn off fouls, etc, and go around using the turbo boost and trucking people with Rodman. Too much fun.

Joe Montana sports talk football. As mentioned by others, I wasted many days of my youth playing this game. Also the Sega NFL game (94 or 95 I think) that had Montana with the chiefs on the cover was a blast. You could trash talk and I remember the sound effects being cheesy but awesome. Boooooom.

I was also a huge Tecmo SB fan. I will probably be in the minority on this one, but I did NOT like the sequels II and III. They added a second playbook for each team, but that also meant an additional step in the play selection process which just really slowed down the pace of the game...which I considered one of it's charms. I also seem to recall that the backgrounds were very "busy" which made it kind of annoying looking at stats...again taking away one of the thinks I really liked about TSB.

if you can get your hands on madden 93 superbowl edition, that game was a blast.

what was added in superbowl edition? was that the same as madden 93 championship edition? and what was different in that compared to regular madden 93? updated rosters? i just had regular madden 93 for genesis.

I think he meant championship edition. That was fun, I got lucky and found a place to buy it back in the day. Wasn't sold in stores.

CE was just basically a best of, based on best teams from the 60s till the release so the 91 season or so.

We have several Vintage Stock stores in my area. Picked up Joe Montana '94 for $1.99. Got Tecmo Super Bowl from Ebay (complete) for $9.99 shipped and have been reliving the time when my kids were little and we played these titles. Been so long since I played these, was surprised to see a chain gang come out in Joe Montana knowing that Madden just got back to doing this in the past couple of years!

Picked up a few more titles at Vintage Stock for cheap. Found a very good 1st generation Genesis on Craigslist, still in the box with Streets of Rage and bought it for $60. A bit more than I wanted to pay but like I said, it's in really good shape.

Going back to Vintage stock today, saw a cartridge of Tecmo Super Bowl III there the other day I'm going to get. I've been to several of these Vintage Stock stores and there are very few Tecmo Bowl games there even though they have a ton of games. Must be a hot seller, and why not?......it's great!

Dug out my old Sega Saturn too and have been rocking out World Series Baseball '98. Great game for it's time and still fun today. I also found my two Dreamcasts and to my surprise they both still work great. Still have my copy of Burning Rangers for the Saturn and I see it's going for as much as $140 on Ebay!

I just feel like that generation was / is more fun, with less expectations than today, not worrying about games being released that needed to be patched. And oh the manuals that I'm seeing with the old games! Wow, NHL '94, Mutant League Football, now those have some thick manuals! It's like the companies actually cared back in the day! And yeah, both of these games were EA titles!

Haven't touched my 360 in a few days and I can't remember the last time I turned on my PS3.
