Histrocial seasons
Do you think SCEA would ever consider releasing a historical season add-ons. I would be willing to pay upwards of $20 for a historical add-on that had all the players from a certain year and the stadiums used, so that we could realistically recreate a franchise for that yearTags: None -
Re: Histrocial seasons
I can;t see it happenin', but there are many talented roster makers here on
OS that are every bit as capable as anyone at SCEA, that put out historical rosters that range from all across many seasons.
But I too would buy historical rosters if they ever did come out. -

The most I see them doing is adding a season/franchise schedule editor and vault.

Re: Histrocial seasons
It's just not feasible that SECA could do this. Say they wanted to do the 1965 season, they would have to sign all 500+ players who were in the league to contracts. There is no union they can go to for current players and sign one deal and get all of the players. They would have to contact all of the players or their estates individually and pay them individually to get their rights. Even if they could do something like this it would cost nowhere near $20, you're looking at a cost of something well over the cost of the game itself.Comment

Is this true, I would think they would purchase the players naming rights from the MLBPA. Is the MLBPA only for active playersIt's just not feasible that SECA could do this. Re: Histrocial seasons
Yes, it's why they don't have Nolan Ryan as the all time strikeout king or Pete Rose as the all time hits leader. They would have to negotiate rights with every player individually in order to put them in the game.
Really, OS makes fine quality historical rosters. They're worth their weight in gold.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: Histrocial seasons
Yes, MLBPA is only for active players. All retired players require individual contracts. It's a big problem with all types of sports collectibles with the legends demanding big fees for their names to be used. It is too bad there is no other way to do it. There are some great roster creators out there though. What would be nice to see from SECA is historical seasons with just the teams and stadiums that were around back then, but even the stadiums require large licencing fees and they'd had to design all the stadiums which they say is a ton of work. Really the only option we have is to use rosters that guys here on OS create.Comment

Re: Histrocial seasons
I've never played OOTP, do they have historical rosters for historical seasons? I work in the sports memorabilia industry and licencing issues with historical players for any kind of item be it a card, jersey, bobble head, or figure is a big process and for many items the cost is simply to high to make them. OOTP is just a text simulator right? As in they do not actually portray images of the player like The Show or a baseball card or figurine? Maybe the rules/laws are different. I would be very interested to find out as well as this is something I deal with on a daily basis.Comment

Re: Histrocial seasons
In OOTP, names are real... stats are also based on real season stats. So are player bios, salaries, etc. The player tendencies/attributes aren't really close to real players, but given the text sim is tuned to reproduce real stats, they aren't far off in terms of numbers... but no real photos of course.I've never played OOTP, do they have historical rosters for historical seasons? Re: Histrocial seasons
There is a separate rule for text based games.
They are not bound by the rule requiring a license/contract if their LIKENESS is not used(pic or player model)
This was tested in court several years ago and the judgement went in favor of the text based games.

But the Show would still be required to have a license just to use a player's name? Even if it's just their last name? There is a separate rule for text based games.

Why is Bob Uecker's name still up there in Miller Park while the other names aren't? Could they put Jack Buck's name in at Busch Stadium next year?Last edited by sydrogerdavid; 01-25-2013, 09:19 PM.Comment

I think it actually had something to do with fantasy baseball ....

Re: Histrocial seasons
They could not even use the last name and portray an actual likeness. They can not even change the name entirely and have the player represent the attributes of a real player. Remember MVP when Bonds pulled out of the MLBPA he had to be portrayed as a white guy named Jon Dowd. I'm not sure about the stadium issue, stadiums come with their own licensing issues. It could be that Uecker has agreed with the Brewers to have his name on anything with a likeness of Miller Park, but SECA would be better able to answer that specific issue. But the Show would still be required to have a license just to use a player's name?
