    This blew my mind

So I am playing Madden 2004 for the PC.. its the free agent signing period in year 4 of my franchise.. and I look and see a rookie 80ovr cornerback available.

This shocked me. Could the AI be so stupid that they would draft a stud cornerback and then not sign him? Did they not have enough cap room? What gives?

Well it turns out.. the player.. Barry Walker from Georgia.. is 5'8 184lbs and has just 74 speed. His acceleration, catching, and awareness are all very high. But with that speed (in combination with his height) you know hes not going to be able to play cornerback in the NFL.

    I thought to my self..
'I feel sorry for the CPU team that signs that scrub and starts him! hah! Hes gonna get burned all day!'

So I finished up signing free agents and simulated the rest.. and then I noticed..

No CPU teams signed Barry Walker. Thats right.. all 31 CPU controlled teams passed on him. An 80 ovr rookie cornerback.

What this shows to me is.. the CPU is smart enough to not just blindly look at the players overall and where he would fit on the depth chart.. but the CPU can actually realize when a player is worse then what his ovr rating shows.

    I love this game.

I feel like on Madden13 if there was a rookie free agent cornerback 80 ovr all the CPU teams would jump to sign him just because he fits into their scheme or has a nice overall rating and is a rookie, failing to realize and take in the fact that he clearly is not fast enough to play cornerback in the NFL.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this on the next gen Madden games?

Edit: I signed him to a small contract and am going to have him as my 3rd string safety (78ovr). If he makes some plays on special teams I might consider giving him a shot to start down the road but if he gets burned his *** is as good as benched!

The AI has always been EA weakest point when it came to Madden. Yes the AI might have improved some since then, but the AI for the most part is still dumb as bricks. The AI is one of the main things EA really need to work on going into the next Gen. Madden. Because if it remains dumb and all. This will catch up with EA and Madden later on down the road.

Exactly, the A.I. has been terrible.

      It's been a complete turnoff.

The AI from Madden 2004, and suggesting that Madden 13's AI doesn't stack up against a 9 year old iteration.

            No, the other way around.

And he doesn't look as food as his 80 rating would suggest, but idk what his speed is like compared to other players in 04.

I'd try him at FS or a backup safety.

                      Re: This blew my mind

I've actually found that the scheme-specific OVR rating calculations dramatically affect how the CPU manages its roster and helps a team over time do a better job of building their roster. Maybe too much, admittedly - I've seen rookies who only fit one particular scheme get released en masse as a result of a midseason coaching change, I'm not sure that early- and mid-round rookies should ever be released during their first season - but if a CPU team doesn't place as much value on speed at CB because they like Tampa 2 CBs, they'll keep a guy that's a good ratings fit if he is a sure tackler and good zone coverage guy, disregarding his speed to an extent. The same player might get cut immediately if a new coach who values more athletic Man-to-Man CBs is introduced to the same team.

I also think that CPU teams may value scheme too much during the offseason free agency period, but the bottom line is that player schemes from my observations have a profound effect on how the CPU builds its teams. It's a goal the CCM dev team set out to meet and I think they accomplished it; that's not to say it couldn't use some tuning, however.

This has given me the strong urge to pop in my PC version of Madden 08 and play.

I miss the older versions of Madden... it's sad that the game (AI) has actually gotten worse.
