    Talking to the Press

I think I'm just gonna stop doing it entirely.

Half the time I try something, I swear it backfires and has the precise opposite effect.

In year 5 of my Career with Cardiff, we stunned the world and won the league on the final day of the season when Chelsea failed 0-1 against Aston Villa and I managed a 2-1 victory over hated rival Swansea. It was glorious, but I digress.

To start my 6th season and title defense, I faced Arsenal. Before the match, I praised them and WOW, they came out like absolute maniacs for the entire 90 minutes + stoppage time. I finished 1-1 but that was quite honestly a miracle.

It would be one thing if EA tipped you off as to how this mechanic works in the game, but alas, like most things EA Sports, it's just a mystery and a very interesting one.

I've used it a handful of times and never noticed anything change. I guess the only time it might have done something is when a player was complaining about not starting matches. I went to the press and praised his play and started him the next couple of matches. No problems with him afterward, but I didn't notice a boost in his performance or anything.

I find it to be mostly useless, however, I'm several seasons in so clubs have changed quite a bit so I use it to get a look at the strength of their starting 11 before the match.

I've seen several things come from this, once I tried to unnerve a rival and they buried me completely, Martin Tyler even mentioned the fact. I've also had players regain form, drop form, one player even requested to be transferred after I rode him for a few games, he was unsettled due to conflict with the manager.

It doesn't let me complain about the referee in the previous match or the reverse fixture so I generally avoid it.

Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. You can only talk to the press when the red icon comes up right?

Or is there another way to do it before EVERY game?

I see it pop up once in a while.

                      Re: Talking to the Press

I did not realize it was suppose to do something. I guess I have seen my team respond to it. Usually I just praise my team. I never comment on our opponent.

My guys have been getting tired more lately and that came after I "motivated" them instead of praised them. I wonder if that is the cause. Did they not respond well to my motivation?

I don't think they do... At first I thought they did but I think it's like a positive choice (praise) and a negative choice (motivate) I think....

                          Re: Talking to the Press

I remember an interview with a dev, probably Rutter, in which he stated there isn't a hard-coded response for each option. I tried a quick google search, but it's needle-in-a-haystack stuff looking for a few lines from FIFA12 pre-release info or video. IIRC, he basically said they wanted it to be unpredictable and intentionally vague (ie, the famous "dice roll"?) because you wouldn't know how players would react IRL. I think he also said whatever the consequences, they wouldn't be extreme.

I tend to go with my gut based on the circumstances. In my Palermo CM, I criticized ST Abel Hernandez after he started the season scoreless in five games. Of course the story said I suggested he start thinking about his future at the club... a little harsher than I wanted. He had a very good next match, including his first goal, so I praised him at the next opportunity. Come to think of it, he's been much better in the last two matches as well...

Another player, LM Nicolas Bertolo, started the season on the bench, but impressed in a few sub appearances. He seems to be around/on the ball a lot and makes things happen. When I switched to a 4-3-1-2, I slotted him in as the LCM and he hasn't left the starting XI since. I praised him before my last match and in the next one he scored a sweet half-volley from outside the box after chesting down a headed clearance. Probably just a coincidence...

I rarely say anything about the other team or manager. In 12, I tried to unnerve Werder Bremen before a big derby game... yeah, not a smart move. As for my team, I'll praise them after a big win or a hard fought loss, but I'm not afraid to motivate after a poor showing.

Just last night, I bad-mouthed GK Cech before a game with Chelsea. When I advanced to game day, the headline was that Chelsea's backup GK was starting instead of GK Cech. I thought that was pretty funny.

I tried to motivate Kyle Walker who was in poor form early in my first season and the headlines on match day stated I had murdered him and his family!

Not really but the "motivation" option for players is far harsher than need be... Unless IRL managers are going around telling players they're going to be transferred if they have a few bad preformances.
