    BREAKING NEWS OUT OF RALEIGH

Raleigh, NC: Breaking news has emerged from Raleigh today, as the Carolina Hurricanes have announced the hiring of a new General Manager. Matt McKeown, a Raleigh native, has stepped in at the head of the Hurricanes organization.

McKeown has immediately gotten to work, attending the Hurricanes preseason practice this afternoon at RCI.

"My goal is to get this team back to the playoffs. Once we get there, we easily become the team to beat", McKeown told reporters. A playoff berth would be the first for Carolina since the 2008-09 season. Furthermore, McKeown looks to bring the Cup back to Raleigh for the first time since 2006, and what would be only the second time in franchise history.

The offseason additions of Alexander Semin and Jordan Staal, as well as the re-signing of Joe Corvo and contract extension of star-forward Tuomo Ruutu certainly give Caniacs something to look forward to. Expectations will be high in Raleigh this year. It will be interesting to see what a new GM can do for the Carolina organization.

Canes Lines Set for Opening Night
The Carolina Hurricanes have officially announced their lines for tonight's matchup against Winnipeg. These are the lines we will likely continue to see this season, pending any injuries or roster moves. Sanguinetti is a healthy scratch tonight, alongside Zac Dalpe. We will likely see Sanguinetti alternate games with either Harrison or McBain as one of the D-men on the 3rd pair this season.

Ladd Leads Jets to Opening Night Victory

Winnipeg, MB It was quite a night for the Winnipeg captain. Andrew Ladd scored 2 goals, and added an assist in the Jets 6-3 victory over Carolina on Saturday night at MTS Centre. Although the Hurricanes got off to a quick start, netting 2 goals midway through the first period, it was a 3-goal second period from Winnipeg that would eventually decide this game.

Carolina's captain, Eric Staal, also had a night to remember. Staal netted 2 goals on 5 shots, and was a +1 in 17:37 of ice time.

Carolina is likely to be having nightmares tonight, as they were burnt by Alexei Ponikarovsky, who played for the Hurricanes until the trade deadline of last season. Ponikarovsky scored a goal and added an assist on Ladd's first goal of the night. Olli Jokinen also scored twice for Winnipeg, and it was Tuomo Ruutu who began the scoring for Carolina in the first period.

Carolina continues this 6-game road trip to begin the season, as they head out west to face Vancouver, Anaheim, Los Angeles, and San Jose next week. The road trip concludes in Boston on October 23rd before the Hurricanes open their home-ice season at PNC Arena on October 26th against the Rangers.

Brent Out with MCL Sprain, Dalpe to Start

Bad news for the Hurricanes, as Center Tim Brent will be out 4 to 5 weeks with what has been diagnosed as an MCL Sprain. Zac Dalpe is expected to step in and fulfill the role of 4th Line Center.

Carolina GM Matt McKeown also announced today that RW Andreas Nodl has been recalled from Charlotte. Nodl is expected to be a healthy scratch Monday night in Vancouver.

Canucks Win 3rd Straight, Luongo Blanks Canes

Vancouver, BC Roberto Luongo recorded a shutout Monday night in Vancouver, as the 'Nucks blanked Carolina, 2-0. The game was close most of the way, and the efforts of Cam Ward earned him first star honors, despite the loss.

Chris Higgins scored the first goal of the game at 14:25 of the 2nd period. The game remained close down the stretch, but the Hurricanes could not find a way to generate any offense. The Canes only put 12 shots on net, despite attempting nearly 40 shots in the game.

Daniel Sedin added a Powerplay Goal at 19:50 of the 3rd period on the empty net to seal the deal for Vancouver.

The Hurricanes will look to put their two-game slump behind them when they head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks later this week.

Following this one. I did a Hurricanes dynasty last year and I had lots of fun. Good luck with yours.

Do you play all your games or sim? Are you outplayed those 2 games? Shots 12 to 39 and 23 to 42. What is your difficulty Superstar/All Star/Pro?

I was outplayed in the first two games, but the sliders definitely need some tweaking. I'll be doing that before I play more games.

Ward Shines Again as Canes Secure First Victory

Anaheim, CA It was a big night again for Cam Ward, and this time he had something to show for. Ward made 22 saves, allowing only one goal in the Hurricanes 3-2 victory over Anaheim.

Carolina got off to a fast start, which is exactly what they needed after being held scoreless Monday night in Vancouver. Jiri Tlusty scored just over a minute in, one of the three Carolina goals in the first, and managed to cling to that lead most of the game. Brandon McMillan scored Anaheim's lone goal at 8:42 of the 3rd period.

The Hurricanes look to build off this momentum as they head south of Anaheim to face Los Angeles tomorrow night.

Ellis Pulled in Season Debut, Canes Lose 7-2

Los Angeles, CA Dan Ellis was looking forward to making his first start Thursday night in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for the Canes backup Goaltender. Ellis was pulled late in the first period after surrendering four goals on just nineteen shots. Cam Ward did not exactly come in and make a difference, as Ward gave up three goals on 29 shots, including a goal late in Period One to make the score 5-0 Los Angeles.

It was the five first period goals by LA that put Carolina in a position where they could not come back. Although Carolina was able to post two goals later in the game, the game was over the moment it began.

The Canes penalty kill was certainly something to be concerned with as well. Carolina gave up 4 power play goals on 5 opportunities, by far their worst penalty killing performance this year.

The Hurricanes look to turn things around in game five of this six-game road trip on Saturday night in San Jose.

                      Canes Top Sharks in Shootout

San Jose, CA It took 65 minutes and three rounds of a shootout, but Carolina secured the victory over San Jose Saturday night, 4-3. The loss is the first of the season for the Sharks (3-0-1), who remain unbeaten in regulation. Jeff Skinner scored twice for the Hurricanes, who are now (2-3-0) on this six-game road trip.

It was a battle between two outstanding goaltenders. Antti Niemi stopped 32 of 35 shots, and Cam Ward stopped 35 of 38, along with 2 San Jose shootout opportunities.

The Hurricanes will conclude their 11-day, 6-game road trip on Tuesday night at TD Garden, as they take on their Eastern Conference foe, the Boston Bruins, who hold the same record as the Canes at this time.

State of the Canes After 5

5 games have gone by, and Carolina has posted a record of (2-3-0) over that span. Although the Hurricanes have yet to play a home game, they only have one game remaining on their 6-game road trip. The Hurricanes hope to take 2 points from Boston tonight, which would put them at .500 (3-3-0) on the season and bring home 6 points in as many games.

Jamie McBain currently leads all scorers with 4 points and 3 assists. Eric Staal leads all goal scorers with three goals and 17 SOG, though he has yet to tally an assist. The current plus/minus leader is Jeff Skinner, who is a +2. Skinner also has 2 goals this season.

                          Staal's Dominate, Canes Rout B's 6-2

Boston, MA It was a huge night for the Hurricanes in Beantown, especially if your last name happens to be Staal. Eric recorded a hat trick plus an assist, and Jordan recorded two assists tonight, including one on Eric's 3rd period power play goal. The two combined for six points and were a collective +3 with seven hits and seven shots on goal.

Cam Ward was back to being Cam Ward tonight, as he stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced. Tim Thomas played all but nine minutes, as he was pulled following the final Hurricanes goal at 11:25 of the third period.

The Hurricanes scored four times in the third period, setting a new high for goals in a period this season. Six goals in tonight's game also sets a new season high.

The Canes capped off their six-game road trip (3-3-0) with tonight's victory. They will (finally) head home to PNC Arena to take on the New York Rangers on Friday night in Raleigh.

                            Canes Send Boychuk to Anaheim

Raleigh, NC The Carolina Hurricanes have traded Zach Boychuk (C) of the Hurricanes AHL Affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, to the Anaheim Ducks, GM Matt McKeown announced today. In return, the Hurricanes will receive Anaheim's 3rd round pick in this year's draft.

"We feel that this was a mutually beneficial trade", McKeown told the media. "Boychuk has a great future ahead of him, but unfortunately he currently has no place in our organization. We wish Zach all the best with the Anaheim organization."

Boychuk has not played in the NHL since March of last season. He scored a goal and 3 assists in 9 games with Charlotte this season.

Canes Oust Rangers in Home Opener

Raleigh, NC It only took the Hurricanes 6 games and 13 days, but they have finally opened their home-ice schedule. Carolina defeated the Rangers 5-3 on Friday night in Raleigh, as the Canes extended their winning streak to 3 games.

Jamie McBain was a top-performer tonight for the Canes, notching two assists, including one on Tuomo Ruutu's power play empty net goal late in the game to seal the deal. The Hurricanes took a season-high 49 shots. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped almost everything he could, making 44 saves on 48 shots. Unfortunately for New York, their defensive effort was far from good enough in comparison to the surging Carolina offense, who have now posted 14 goals over the course of their three-game winning streak.

Carolina will look to continue their success as they host the Columbus Blue Jackets Sunday afternoon prior to hitting the road for a quick trip to New Jersey.
