I think what's important about this happening in regard to Flacco is to remind people how these deals really work... especially for QBs. They get a big signing bonus (guaranteed money) and a deal that averages a high amount, but the money is broken up so that you can sign other guys. Deals are backloaded in some way, and then as you near the end of the deal either a new deal is reworked if you want to keep the guy and need to free up money to sign other players, or the guy is traded/released before he becomes a huge cap hit. This is nothing new. I wouldn't even say it's great of Brady to do it... it's the business of the NFL.

The Alex Smith trade is going to be for the Chiefs Second Round Pick this year and possibly a pick next year.

Fleeced the Chiefs for a player that they weren't even going to keep anyway. The 49ers have 15 picks in 2013. I'd love for them to make a trade for Darrelle Revis.

Alex Smith, Joeckel, Jamaal Charles, Bowe. Not too shabby to compete for a wildcard spot.

I wouldn't call it fleeced. They can't go anywhere but up from 2 wins and they weren't drafting anyone 33rd overall that's as good as Smith.

At QB. It's very possible for them to draft someone as good (or better) at another position at 33.

I haven't looked at their schedule, but I'd imagine it's pretty soft considering they were the worst team in the league. If they get in the 7-9 win range, I'd say the trade was worth it. Reid does have a pretty good track record with QBs.

Maybe they overpaid a little, but when you're looking at Matt Cassel and Tyler Palko on the dept chart, you kind of have to.

On the other hand, SF has all these picks and a loaded roster. They should be trying to move up to draft elite prospects (especially with the new rookie scale), or as mentioned earlier trade for Darrelle Revis. No sense in drafting a ton of rookies that won't play.

                            Who were they bidding against?

KC had the leverage, not San Fran. The 49ers weren't going to keep Smith as a backup at that salary.

From what I read, Jacksonville and Arizona backed off because the price the 49ers were asking for was too steep.

We're not talking about a mid 2nd round pick. Nor are we talking about an elite QB.

David Hawthorne, Colston, Jahri Evans, and Ben Grubbs have all restructured their contracts. Probably only a couple of million over the cap, at this point if Vilma/Smith don't accept much lesser deals cut them so we can possibly sign one contributor as long as we don't overpay.

I don't see any point in keeping Vilma as I think Lofton/Hawthorne can handle ILB in a 3-4
Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, Lightning

What does that draft pick even mean though? As a point of reference, the 33rd pick last year was Brian Quick. I'd certainly rather have Alex Smith than him.

You never know with these draft picks and I'm sure the Chiefs would rather go with a known commodity at the most important position than take that risk. Is Alex Smith elite, no, but that's not the point since no elite QB is available. They got the best QB available for what, in theory, will be the 33rd best rookie.

All I'm saying is that they weren't fleeced. It seems like a solid deal for all parties.

EDIT: I just did a quick scan of the entire 2012 NFL Draft and, other than Russell Wilson, there's not a single player selected after 32 that I'd take over Alex Smith. Obviously the pool of players this year is entirely different, but for a point of reference it's interesting. We also might be underestimating how much, even league average, QB play will help the Chiefs. Matt Cassel and Tyler Palko.....
