Ability. To a degree you want to reward prior production, but the #1 goal is to assemble the best talent for the future, which means valuing players going forward.

I'm not saying it's necessarily true in this case but if Cruz has produced a bit higher than his actual ability to date, the Giants are playing it right from a football perspective too.

I'd say production contributes to leverage more directly than value. But it's a fairly minor distinction.

Walker has never been much of a receiver. His nine drops in the 2012 regular season is the 3rd worst among all tight ends. But he's one of the best run blocking tight ends, so he could definitely give Chris Johnson a boost in the running game.

As for the Eagles, they decide to not sign big name players, but they all have chances to becoming starters.

The Eagles are moving into a 3-4 defense, so a signing for a nose tackle (Isaac Sopoaga) was much needed. Ironically the biggest defensive starter for the 49ers last year was probably their most quietest in terms of performance. However, I'm hoping he can bring something against the run because that was something that Babin and Jenkins struggled with.

Patrick Chung was the odd man out in New England with Steve Gregory and McCourty taking the helms at safety. But considering how weak the Eagles safety corps is, I see him regaining a starting job.

Before Bradley Fletcher tore his ACL in 2011, he was a very good tackler, which is very refreshing to hear about considering how many missed tackles I've been used to seeing.

And I heard about something interesting with Dunta Robinson. Initially I found it a head-scratcher that the Chiefs decided signed to sign him to a 3-year $15 million contract. But I'm hearing he will likely play safety for them. This makes a lot of sense considering how much of a hard hitter he his.

What the hell the Vikings doing? I do love that they kept Felton though.

Totally agree, but that's only if we completely ignore special teams. I will happily trade the 25th pick and a 3rd rd 2014 pick and pay $11m/year for a 24 year old who has over 7,000 all-purpose yards in 54 career games (more than any receiver in their first four years in NFL history).

Yeah but how many other starting WRs return Kicks/Punts 3-4 times a game and getting 4-5 additional handoffs? Less than a handful maybe?

But I'm guessing this is the one time of the year where Percy Harvin making $11 mil per year is OK because if this were any other time of the year, he'd be considered overpaid(to which I think he is but we get one of these every offseason so I'm not surprised).

So glad Asomugha is gone, what a freaking mistake that turned out to be.

I blame more so on the coaching staff rather than individual players.

You're right. The Giants are playing it right, from a business perspective. That being said, if he doesn't get a deal, Cruz should play it right from his perspective and hold out. The only leverage he has are his services as a WR. He should withhold those services.
I think Cruz has out-played his abilities. He is valuable, but he is also replaceable. A healthy Nicks(who knows if that's possible) is worth a lot more to NY. They obviously want to keep Cruz, but I think Cruz wants #1 money...he is not a #1 WR...nor can the Giants afford to give him that.

Yeah its easy to say just pay the man. But relative to what we need to get done contract wise down the road, we cant pay Cruz no 5 year 55 million. Can't happen. Cruz isnt worth that for us.

Plus the track record of skill players on offense leaving the team is horrendous. The Giants believe in next man up. What we got out of Cruz for 500k per was stellar. Let somebody else pay for him. I would wish him nothing but the best if he were to move on, unless it were with the Eagles.

That statement right there is what defines good teams.

Free agency is funny when you look at it....you constantly see bad teams pay a lot of money to players for what they've already done.

Not the same level of production, but Laurent Robinson found new life in Dallas and worked that into a nice deal with Jacksonville.......haven't heard from him since.

If the NFL had fully guaranteed contracts, they would be in a mess just like the NBA was. These GMs give out horrific deals.
