    Just my $.02

Part of this was due to the ease of hitting straight with the new TSC in '13. Another major factor was the fact that you could zoom out to the exact landing point your ball would hit giving the user way too much information to make the swing with. I am sorry that some of you feel the yardages need to be in the Simulation mode, but how many times have you seen a PGA TOUR Pro miss the fairway even when they thought they aimed their shot to the right area and executed the shot the way they intended? It happens more than most of you think.

Tour Pro's miss greens and fairways because hitting a golfball the exact distance and direction you are aiming is hard. Sometimes they hook/slice it, other times they hit a flier or catch it fat. It is rarely, if ever, because of a lack of info about the course or yardages.

Leaving the yardages out forces users to:

    a) learn their club distances
The clubs distances are already in the game via the HUD

    b) learn the course layouts and hazard locations
Again, you figure this out ahead of time and have it available to you during your round. You DONT figure this out during the round.

    c) brings the rough BACK into play
If the rough isn't in play, its because the swing mechanic is too easy to perfect.

    d) learn to use the HUD as it tells you every thing you need to know to make an approach shot
Except yardages, green shape, terrain details on the green, hazards around the green, etc.....

    e) learn to manage the risk/reward factor when driving the ball
This has always been in the game

This is certainly more realistic than being able to zoom out and see yardage markers or a camera that shows where your ball will land when aimed. Should there be yardage markers that you can see while zoomed above the golfers shoulder as in Simulation mode? I can see making a case for that as long as the yardage markers give some sort of indication where the aiming marker is at, I get that. Lets see how this works out in the final game release. Human nature is to resist change. I was not a fan of not having yardage markers at first, but I have since come to want to play without these yardages as it is an extreme test of how well you can manage the course from the Golfer's perspective. Again, I respect those who feel differently now, but lets circle back and discuss this again a month or two after the game is released and we will see how realistic the impact to scoring is. You guys may be right and I may be wrong, but at least EA is giving you the option to play the game the way YOU want to play and there are options for those wanting even more challenge.

Making the game harder via limited info isn't the same as making it closer to the real thing. Thats our argument. And nobody is complaining that they can't customize it to their desire. It's the fact that EA has marketed a "SIMULATION" mode thats not simulation, and in fact, is simply limiting the info any decent golfer uses in a tournament round.

One thing that pissed me off though was landing in some brush on one of the holes at Royal Birkdale. I ended up exceeding the shot limit because I couldn't get out of it. It's almost like trying to hit your ball through a brick wall when you get in a bad spot.
It is very difficult to recover when you hit it in the trees. Not that you can't get a club on the ball but just seeing a way to escape. I think this is where you need to be able to step back from the ball, try to find an opening then execute the shot. Usually, I just try to go sideways, which a pro will have to do occasionally, but rarely.

        A few questions....

If I do not buy the Historic copy, is there a driving range to practice on in the regular copy?

Could someone comment on the "Strike" feature and how it works?

I think I understand but am not sure. First, I see the Tab but how do you toggle from "Stance" to "Strike"; which button do you hit (PS3)? Any and all info is appreciated or a link where it explains it.

        Thanks.

Did you try using one of your wedges to get out of it. I could understand using a mid iron and not getting it out but if you get stuck in there and can't even get a wedge to plop it back out to the fairway then there's a problem that needs to be patched.

Which hole was it and which side of the rough? Now I wanna try it and see what works.

Hitting out of the trees is nearly impossible. You can't get a good look at what's above and in front of you, and you sometimes can't even hit a mid iron punch shot out without catching a leaf that kills your shot.

I'm a "barely break 100 on a good day" golfer, but even I can hit a 5 iron punch out of the trees in real life. (I get lots of practice! :wink

There is not a driving range in the Standard Edition of the game. However, you can go into Practice Round at any course (I always used hole 1 at St Andrews) with mulligans on and use the first tee as a driving range.

The Strike feature simulates where your clubface is at impact. In most situations, you will want to get it right in the center of the ball. But in some other situations (bunkers for example) you may want to alter your strike point to a lower spot to get under the ball more. The Strike Meter has 4 different settings:
              1. Perfect - The strike point is defaulted to the center of the ball. You can move it where you want to and it will stay at that spot.
              2. Sticky - The strike point is defaulted to the center of the meter. You can move it where you want to and it will stay at that spot.
              3. Analog - The strike point is defaulted to the center of the meter. You move it by holding the analog stick in place throughout your swing.
              4. Analog Fade - Analog but it fades to invisible as soon as you move it.

When you are in the aiming state of the game, you are controlling your Stance. The Stance enables you to set up different shots. You can close your stance to hit a draw and open it to hit a fade. You can move the ball forward in your stance to hit it higher, and back in your stance to hit it lower.

When you are done aiming and you go to address the ball (hit X when done aiming), you automatically switch to Strike. Strike is only effected in this state of the game.

If I get stuck in the trees at Oak Hill then I immediately pull my 5 wood and let the fun begin.

Now there are some spots that are ALMOST impossible to get out of in 1 shot but if you've been there then it should keep you honest off the tee.

I used to hate those trees but now I salivate if I land there sometimes after not being patient on my tee shot.

Heheheh.....love it. I'm right there with ya.

And I have only ever broken 100 on a putt-putt course.

I am really bad...but I have fun and I play for good shots more than I play for score. Once I can string together good shots, THEN I will play for score!

Great idea on the practice. Lots of room 1st hole at St. Andrews!

I will try the Strike tonight. I knew it was there but just not enough about it.

We'll just agree to disagree. We have different visions for what a Simulation mode should be like. Having played the most challenging levels only in all TW games, I welcome the challenge of this Simulation mode as it is quite a bit more challenging than Tournament mode from '13. I am sorry you feel differently. If enough folks feel like you do, then EA will likely take notice and consider changes in TW15. At the end of the day, this is their true "simulation" effort and it will likely evolve as the game evolves.

The day EA takes away Simulation Mode is the day I walk just like I did a few years ago. When it comes to difficulty, EA ADDED and didn't subtract levels of difficulty and challenge. If peeps feel like Sim Mode is not as advertised then go back to Tour Pro. Problem solved.
