How do you know if a player is about to retire?

I'm worried Bob Sanders is going to retire at age 32 going into the 2014 season. He completed the top tier of his goals and I'm playing for the Super Bowl. Don't want to have to buy the SS retire package if I don't have to now.

Players don't ever really hint at retirement in Madden, as far as I know. You have to make an educated guess based on age and OVR rating.

If you're concerned about Sanders retiring and he's a vital cog of your team, I'd go ahead and buy the SS Retirement Package.

Do they have to be declining to retire or can they retire early with a high OVR?

Bob Sanders should have retired years ago when he was still a good player.

Look at his predictability trait. Also as long a his stats are still good the higher chance he doesn't retire. In my franchise Charles Woodson played into 2015 so for Bob Sanders he should be good for at least another year.
