It's probably a little late for this, but I just saw this blog post for NCAA:
Basically, there are coaching talent trees with traits for game management and recruiting. Coordinators are in the game and also have talent trees to spend XP on. This is a million billion trillion times better (at least!) than the current system for coaches in Madden.
These traits should have a much more varied and interesting effect on gameplay and team management, and they add depth to decisions like when to call a timeout or whether to attempt a kick. They also force the user to make interesting choices about which traits are more important and what strategy will produce more wins: you can try to coach players up or you can recruit better talent.
If you read the blog in detail, there is SO much in there that should make coaches matter and actually feel like coaches instead of the nothing that they are in Madden. ***Anyone who is in touch with Madden devs, please ask if/when a system like this is coming to Madden.*** I don't play NCAA and I have no idea if this system is something that was tried before this year. I don't know if it has sucked or will suck. But I strongly doubt it would be any less than a significant upgrade over what we have in Madden. I really wish we got something like this instead of the tycoon mini-game stuff. Forgive me if this is old news - I happened to check on NCAA and my head exploded when I saw what's happening over there.
