He was a bad mamma jamma, to steal from Chris Jericho.

Was introduced to Deacon on the NFL Films epic tape Crunch Course. Since then has always been a favorite of mine. Very sad news.

        Actually Carl Carlton

Obviously most, if not all of us are too young to have seen Deacon play but the NFL Films footage and the numerous interviews and such portray a great player and an even better guy. I bet he'd be a great guy to knock back a few wobbly pops with.

The master of the head slap and the sack!

        RIP Deacon Jones.

I didn't see much of Deacon but I loved his personality and the little film I saw of him.

          R.I.P.

Ya beat me to the Carl Carlton!

Yup, The Deacon was the anchor of one of the most dominant DLs in NFL History:

            The Fearsome Foursome (from wiki):

Still later, Rosey Grier was acquired from the New York Giants in 1963 to join Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones as the Los Angeles Rams starting defensive line. They became known as the Fearsome Foursome, and the greater publicity garnered by the NFL leads many to assume they were the originals. Dick Butkus called them "the most dominant line in football history." They gained fame as the Rams went from a perennial second division, under .500 team to a NFL powerhouse under coach George Allen.

He also had a very brief acting career that lead to some memorable guest spots on The Odd Couple and Bewitched, as well as having a support role in the 1978 remake of "Heaven Can Wait"...

As SPTO alluded to...seemed like a VERY like-able guy...

Well, providing you weren't on the receiving end of his signature "Head Slap", which was eventually made illegal...

            Anyway:

            RIP Mr. Jones!

What's sad is that this thread has had 5 replies in NINE DAYS. The history of the game is not being respected. The youth are growing up not knowing about what made this game what it is.

No one was ever as dominant off the edge. If sacks counted back then, he'd be number one AND number two on the single season record list. He had FIFTY in two seasons. And that's playing a TWELVE GAME schedule.

I'll readilly admit I'm fairly ignorant of the history of the NFL outside of high profile players and events as someone who's been a fan since the 90s and it doesn't surprise me that many other fans are probably the same way.

                Anyways, this is pretty cool:

The NFL sack leader each season will now receive the Deacon Jones award.

I for one, have just chose not to respond because what can be said that has not already. He was a sheer monster and one of the greatest D-lineman to ever play the game. It is a very sad to hear about him passing, truly a innovator in a violent sport.
