Switching a facemask on a helmet is simply a matter of four screws so it is really easy to take a black facemask off a helmet and put on a white one.

My guess is UNC is probably planning to use different facemasks with the same shells this year based on the uniform combo. Like white on the white shell for white jerseys and pants and black on the white shell for white jerseys and carolina blue pants for example.
